@gustavomaldonado2567

It's either. There are a number of football codes including Rugby Football, Australian Rules Football, American Football, Gaelic Football, etc. Association Football is the most popular around the world, so the generic term is generally accepted; but in regions where other codes are popular the term Soccer is used. In fact, if you look at late 19th century documents, the term Association Football was commonly used to distinguish it from other forms. The first Liverpool season ticket stated (Association), an ad for England vs Scotland in Foot-Ball stated (Association Rules), an 1890 article about the establishment of Sevilla FC (Spain's oldest) states that association rules were chosen, there is an 1885 "Famous Footballers" etching of A E Stoddart captioned "pasing the ball" (with his hands), etc..

the reason why the American Football is soooooooooooooo popular in the USA is because of all the media coverage. Viewers are conditioned to care about the game that for many outsiders is unbearably boring. Think about it, all the sports networks only talk about other sports when they're in season but they talk NFL all year. And for a while they even tried to discredit "soccer" as they call it, saying it wasn't a real man's sport, but golf and tennis are though. Football, i'm sorry, i mean soccer is the most popular sport in the world and the powers that be in the USA are well aware of that and because they control the media they were able to convince the american population that "soccer" isn't a real sport and is not worth playing nor is it worth watching. i personally don't care for american football. Teams rarely score and there are too many commercial breaks. i actually prefer rugby, it has similar rules to the NFL except its all in continuous play. also in rugby all players must have a level of fitness unlike in the NFL where blockers just try to get as big and as strong as they possibly can to play for 6 seconds at a time. just my opinion though.

I think the main thing the Americans misunderstand is the passion we feel for our teams over here, you're born into it like I'm sure you are with American football teams. Low scoring games don't make it any less entertaining to watch. I'm sat there on edge, my heart rate peaking for 90 minutes and when we score I just explode, there's nothing like it for me. And when your team loses you're furious or depressed but it's an addiction and you're going back the next week and then the week after and so on and so forth. I've recently started watching some American football and I find it very interesting but I don't get that same excitement I do watching a football game because I have no "passion" for the game. Even when I watch a game as a neutral I can't get as excited as I do watching my local team play. Then there's the understanding, for example I understand the basic rules of American football but I don't understand the tactics in depth and I'd assume it's the same for any American who hasn't played football, hence why they think midfield play is meaningless when really it can be the most important part of the game. Since I've started watching American football, mainly college football I've realised how seriously Americans take sport, if football did grow they could, due to the high emphasis on sport, do really well and produce some great talent. People need to stop all this hating honestly I really liked the guy in this video who was trying to encourage the others to give it a go, without that it'll never grow in the states.

Another way football and soccer are different is in fan culture. At a football game, you're more likely to encounter drunk fans screaming their heads off for their team, while in soccer you have fans chanting and singing throughout the game - and it doesn't detract from what's happening on the pitch. Also, I've never heard of hooligans being associated with football teams, while in soccer that's the stereotype (also, hooligans don't wear the team colors).

karl Pilkington I am well aware of the TOO MUCH SCORING in basketball criticism. It seems the only thing that matters is the last 3 minutes in a basketball game. However, too much scoring translates into action for most Americans. I understand the thrill of a goal in soccer. I can see why people like it. There is nothing like it in all of sports. However, I also see the problems with penalty kicks to decide a match and REFs having a tremendous impact on the outcome of a game. Soccer has made the climax so good that it is almost unobtainable or it is induced artificially through the REFs. I don't like that trade off.

The thing is most americans dont know what theyre talking about when they talk about soccer. The game is alot more than "kicking a ball around". One wrong pass and your attack is absolutely crewed then you have to go backwards and restart the attack. My dad who played american football in high school was in the same situation but once i started playing soccer he understood more. Im a smaller kid hence why i play soccer, ill admit it i would never last in football, but you have to admit a 300 lb lineman would not last 15 minutes, let alone 90 on a pitch. The thing is now that my dad knows the sport after i explain it to him he appreciates it and enjoys watching it. Sure people dive in soccer ill admit it i have a few times but you cant judge a whole entire sport on 2% of the population doing wrong there is "flopping" as people call it in every sport. The REAL topic is being avoided by everyone here. In order to solve the topic regarding American Football v Soccer, people should first solve the topic regarding the following debate: American Football v Rugby. As a brit born and bred, allow me to enlighten you all: The topic of American Football versus Rugby is an interesting one and there are two possibilities. A: American football is simply a BASTARDISATION of Rugby. B: The two sports evolved entirely separately and independently of eachother without any cross contamination via first, second or third party inventors/players/governing bodies. If the latter is true, then they really are entirely different conceptions from a development perspective. On the surface of it, the two sports seem to have the same technical objective - Pick up a ball shaped object and MANUALLY TRANSPORT IT WITH HANDS by running from any given place on the pitch to another place on the pitch - whilst SIMULTANEOUSLY DODGING TACKLES BY OPPOSITION PLAYERS. The ballshaped object is then made to MANUALLY MADE TO CONTACT THE GROUND WITH HANDS at the targeted secondary point on the pitch. Another difference is that American Football players always wear protection whilst playing. Rugby players do not wear protection whilst playing. Both sports have the same technical objective whilst engaging the same physical method of achieving that technical objective so the question we must ask regarding these two sports is who copied who?

@@philmccracken179 ok, here is the thing. First, why you have to disrespect people like that. Just because some of us didn't watch/follow something you love, then you called them more inferior than you, like you call us had low attention span. Do you think making Rolex come from low span of attention? Do you think designing Mercedes-Benz came from someone who was lack of attention? The argument was irrelevant, so no need to continue about it. Second No, it is not always good had a longer game. (My personal opinion) As an Arsenal & Real Madrid fan I prefer 2 matches in 4 hours span. So I could watch 2 diffrent style of plays in my free time. Then I believe most of us want the game finished the game in normal time instead you finish it by in extra time or penalty shootout(only happened in knockouts stages). So if he said he can do something productive during game stoppage or commercial break, we can continue our things after the game. Third I just sayin the fact that an NFL game take more time than a football match (normal time or leagues gameweek) . I never say NFL game was boring or whatsoever, or disrespect the game. Instead I adore the game ( I am chiefs fan by the eay) . It is not about which sport is better. No, I am just saying that these two diffrent sport had two diffrent nature. As a person who watch both sports, you can't use just an american perspective to watch or enjoy football/soccer and same thing to me, I can't use my non american perspective to watch or enjoy NFL. Forth So I would like to share my experience why I love american football. Years ago I acciddently click subscribe button in NFL channel after checking some plays, years after that a highlight game pop out in my feed it was Chiefs vs Rams week 11 season 2018. This highlight turn me on for NFL, but then I can't just turn on my TV and watch NFL game. Because back then when I was in highschool, I used to watch an actual game without knowing shits and it didn't attract me at all. That's why, I need to know what I was expecting and waiting in a game. Why this moment matter, why the the players hyped even they didn't score. So then I learnt the game and found out the shits I was expecting from an NFL game such as OBJ's one handed catch, De Hop catch in crowded spot, Derrick Henry slaming some heads with his stif arm, no look pass from Mahomes, an elusive runs from Lamar and many more. And yes I still didn't like the game stoppage in NFL because it pause the moment of excitement when I watch it, then I understand that this is the nature of the game. Theu need to hurdle to setup the next play. They hurdle to make a good plays to entertain the fans. That's why I can endure those stoppages and commercial breaks a game because I knew what I was waiting for. Fifth Do you watch football/soccer? If you don't, I suggest you to watch it. But wait! Don't watch football without knowing shits about it. I suggest you to check the football videos that initiate and generate your excitement for this sport. Learnt something like why these people hyped even though there was no one who score a goal, why this moment matter, why they were celebrating, watch cristiano, messi, zlatan, neymar highlights, learnt what is derby, what is north west derby, what os el clasico. Then you know the things you are watching. It is like you buy your favorite baverage (let say Coca-Cola) , you knew this is the taste that you expect from a bottle of coke, then after that, it generate your curiosity to read the expired date, the compositions etc. You will knew the rules of the game, and the rules how the leagues works eventually after you were invested by it. Hope you give it a try. Sixth If the sport (football/soccer) don't fit you or you don't like it. Just leave it be. Every sports require specifics and particulars skills and it took years of training to mastered it and make it best. So no need to disrespect it. Peace

Knowing that he is the face of ESPN first take and he oftenly outburst and uncontroll for his delivery, somehow validate the stereotype (even though we already knew it just stereotype or prejudice and doesn't represent the actual situation). I think we as Americans over think soccer too much. I played soccer and to me its how you set up the goal. You can win in soccer, but look bad. If a team scores 1 goal and just passes the ball around and parks the bus, thats boring and to me that is winning in ugly fashion. Also, I don't need to have high scores to enjoy a game because I can appreciate when a keeper makes a good save or when the defense disrupts the offense's chance of scoring, and set up a counter attack. In my opinion, I think blows out are bad for the game. I don't want to watch a 6-0 game like Beryn Munich game in the Champions League this week, because to me it just shows a team has been outclasses, I like close competitive games.

It's laughable how flawed your logic is. There is a competitive Soccer league in almost every country on earth compared to Football only having leagues in America and Canada. Since there are more teams for soccer players to play on one would think that it would take less "talent" to get noticed from the smaller teams. Where as in Football you would need to get noticed by roughly 45 teams in order to be considered professional. So by that ratio it takes more skill to play football than soccer. GG

I played both soccer (sorry Europeans - fooootball) AND American football when I was younger and there's really NO comparison between the 2 sports. I will say one pointed thing for this post -- it's really seems pointless for the fans to go wild in a soccer stadium and chant for minutes when their team ALMOST scores!! And to answer the video's insinuation here about US-football scoring and soccer scoring being about the same (touchdowns compared to Goals) -- they're clearly NOT !!! According to some sources the average soccer match ends exactly 1.6 to .5 which is roughly the same as a US football game score ending 10 to 3 (far below average). And that kind of low scoring is NOT acceptable on a continuous basis to either teams nor fans in US football at any level. Nice try video commentators to make them seem scoring equals when they're NOT.

Since you've played both, then you should know that it requires much more skill, intelligence, and technique to maneuver a ball with your feet than to catch a football with your hands. Add the fact that we're shooting at a 8 x 24 goal compared to yours that stretches from sideline to sideline, and you will begin to understand why it's more difficult to score in soccer. But if all you watch your sport for is the scoring, why not just skip the match and watch the highlights, it will save you the 3 hrs of commercials, replays, and huddles that make NFL sooo fuckin boring to watch.

Plus you wanna argue about goal post lengths???? soccer players shoot at a 24 ft wide goal while football players kick "also with their feet" at a 18 ft wide goal on field goals thats a 6 ft difference boss, learn facts then try to trash talk football, until then soccer loses :):):):):)

Jamie Lee i had given you the benefit of the doubt of not being an idiot, but since you continue to defend your ridiculous statement, let me explain something very obvious to you. In soccer, there is a GOALKEEPER guarding the goal, usually over 6ft tall which covers more than half of the height of the goal. In NFL, you have 40ft x 18ft with NO GOALKEEPER. Your arguement would be valid if either : 1. there were no goal keepers in soccer, or 2. NFL had a 20ft human protecting the field goal. Since none of these will ever happen, your arguement continues to be garbage.

Besides the fact that he referred to tweeting as something productive how can you claim football seems more accidental when a lot more technique and tactical play is used which is probably why there is less scoring whereas the american version is pretty much based on who hits the hardest and who can take a beating better. Every play is a chess match. Overall player skill and coordination, as well as physical endurance (in terms of running) and stamina goes to soccer. Tactical/strategic play, strength, endurance (in terms of taking hits) and specialist skill goes to football. You seem to be one of the sensible people on the internet - American football, as you said, is not superior to -real- association football (there are easily 10 distinct codes of football so I hardly think any code can claim to the "real" one).
