As we start week three of this road trip in France we head to the coast. A short drive from Bordeaux brings us to the Atlantic near Arcachon. Many years ago we camped below the mighty Dune du Pilat. Today we returned for the first time.
The Dune du Pilat is the tallest dune in Europe (104 metres) and is a great tourist attraction with over two million a year visiting. Although the weather was not promising there were quite a few sightseers climbing the Dune close to the car park and visitor centre. A short walk though soon left those crowds behind and we could have a more enjoyable experience. Out to sea we could see the Atlantic breakers and also shallows protected by sandbanks where shellfish were being farmed. Inland the expansive forests of Les Landes stretched into the distance.
During the summer parts of the forest were destroyed by wild fires some of which reached the foot of the Dunes. The campsite below us had been lost to one such fire. As we looked into the distance we could see several showers crossing the scene. Soon one was finally to catch us and give us a good soaking before we returned to our car.
