I remember watching TV and news station came on and was showing a steamboat that broke loose on the Missouri River and two tugboats were trying to hold it back, but they couldn't and watched the stacks get crushed when the steamboat hit one of the downtown kc bridges. They were trying to restore the steamboat, but never knew what happened to it after the flood. I was 11 years old at that time.

I was 22 when this happened. I remember it like it was yesterday. The Blue river flooded really bad, which made driving from Raytown to the plaza area VERY difficult since 63rd, Blue parkway, and just about every other route that crossed the blue river being flooded out. I-70 was the shortest route, but since it was the only way to get through it was basically a parking lot. Everything that was on the Missouri River or along its tributaries once you started getting close to the river was under water. Just about EVERY river or creek was either in flood stage or really close... EVERYWHERE.

I remember sandbagging in Parkville during this. We lost. I also remember losing Java Gai to this, that sucked. The shot of the river, we got lucky. A few days later the storms started training away from us and away from north of us. A few more days of heavy rain and those flood walls would have failed. That summer was nuts.

I lived in Riverside when this all happened. We had just moved from the houses that skirted the park and the river up to the apartment buildings just one street up. I remember a man walking through the water with a huge snake hanging around his neck and I was scared witless.

Interesting that you show something other than the Mississippi. Because as a Rivers did flood in 93 but the Mississippi got the Lion's share of the attention. But then most of damage to. For example I think it was on highway 36 something like that over by the Mississippi River the guy actually floated a barge in and soak it and they say it landed within a quarter inch of what we're supposed to be. He said that next time he'll just float his restaurant out. Friend of mine a time was with the Red Cross and gave me a lot of information because she was stationed there as a volunteer during that time. She wasn't really a volunteer as such she's being paid she worked for them. But in any case the flood of 93 whatever footage you have is very interesting. People talk about a flood that happened maybe a dozen years ago or so it just doesn't compare to 93. Thanks for sharing

@@glynisarnall3644 I'm glad you agree with me. Because the flood of 93 everybody talks about the Mississippi River. And my comment was it's interesting that he showed something OTHER than the Mississippi. In his case he showed the Missouri River which flows right down through Kansas City. Of course empties into the Mississippi River. But thanks for the reply and that's an easy mistake when you misread. I appreciate the heads up attempt. I've done that before I tried to help somebody out only to be wrong myself. Glad it only happened once haha. I think it was around 10 years after the flood of 93 it was just the opposite kind of like it is now everything was low. It got so low that many towns and cities that Drew water off of the Missouri River including Kansas City had to lower there water intake pipe. They say that by time somebody in Kansas City or maybe it's St Louis consumes water from their faucet it's already been used seven times. Because at the cereal plants they reconditioned water and put it back in. Just another fun fact

I wasn't on this earth yet, but my great uncle Robert told me about that flood. It must have been a horrible one because he was born and raised in Ohio and he later died there, but said that the river near where we lived flooded so bad that the waters came up to the second floor of houses. I'm not going to go into everything he told because it's not a good idea, but your grandfather was right.
