llFarikoll 15 I’m an English Major so don’t come at me but- Chapter 7, about two pages from the end (pg 143 if you have the Scribner edition) “Well, first Daisy turned away from the woman toward the other car, and then she lost the nerve and turned back.” Then a little further on, “Anyhow-Daisy stepped on it. I tried to make her stop, but she couldn’t, so I pulled on the emergency break. Then she fell over into my lap and I drove on.” It is not explicitly stated that she knew it was Tom’s Mistress. Nor it is it 100% certain that she intended to kill her. An argument could be made either way but i personally think that she chose to kill another human rather than ruin a car. She chose material items over a living being, which is very telling and fits in line with the message of the novel as well as Daisy’s character. The rich will sacrifice human lives as long as they get the things they want. She sacrificed Myrtle so she would not crash the car (which by the way would have had a high chance of them surviving). She sacrificed Gatsby so she wouldn’t get in trouble.

@@darkgirl9706 I don't really think that's true. Old cars don't have a lot of safety built in. There were no seatbelts, if Daisy hit the car head on, there's a chance that Gatsby and Daisy could have been launched. Daisy was an inexperienced driver shaken up from her argument with Tom, driving into a car head on is something that takes nerve, something that Daisy was lacking at the time. Also, the way Gatsby says it, it was getting dark out and it was hard to see, so Daisy likely didn't see Myrtle until a few seconds before the collision. There was no way to brake because cars back then were heavy and with bad break systems. That quote of "she stepped on it" was after she hit Myrtle. She couldn't handle what she had just done, so she drove as fast as she could to get away. Why aren't you asking why Myrtle didn't jump out of the way of the car when it became obvious it wasn't going to stop in time? You're getting mad at Daisy for not taking the hit when Myrtle could have done the same. Either the car was going too fast for Myrtle to have a reaction and therefore too fast for Daisy to actually think about the consequences to her action other than the immediate instinct of "don't hit the person" then "don't hit the car" or Myrtle willfully stood in front of a moving car until it hit her. Myrtle was intending to flag the car down and make the car stop, but there was no way the car could have stopped in time, so how is it in any way Daisy's fault?

So many people say Gatsby only loved the image he had created of Daisy but I disagree. In this scene, he was hiding in the bushes of her yard in case Tom beat her up for infidelity so he could run in and rescue her. Joseph Long III he didn’t know her for years. They met in the summer of 1917 and their relationship lasted for about 3 months. He then went to the War. Daisy and Gatsby’s affair then lasted for another 3 months. So overall their relationship was really about 6 months long. He didn’t love her but loved the idea of having a trophy wife. Possibly Daisy loved him at one point, but she preferred the security of wealth over him. This movie does make it look like he was actually in love with her at some points tho.

A lot of people confuse what Gatsby did for Daisy as love, but I think he did it out of desperation. It took me awhile to understand what the eyes on the billboard really represent. At first, and like many who read the story, I thought it symbolized the eyes of God, like some higher force was involved in the events of the story. But that didn't feel satisfying because this is suppose to be the Roaring 20s, a time of excess, loose morals, and fast-paced parties. Someone else pointed out, and I 100% agree now, that the eyes are suppose to represent society, but high society specifically, the world that Daisy belongs to. This is most likely the case because the glasses are golden and yellow is suppose to stand for wealth and luxury and if I'm not mistaken, Doctors in those days were part of a higher order of society or at least ran in similar circles. So the glasses represent how in that world of wealth, everyone is always watching each other, trying to outdo and one up their peers. That's why it was so important that Daisy was the one driving. Yes it's poetic justice (perhaps cosmic) that Daisy unknowingly killed her husband's mistress purely through coincidence, but it's more than that. You have to remember that Gatsby is new money; he wasn't born blue blooded -- he isn't one of them. In those days, men like him were seen as the filth of common society daring to climb to the level of the "sophisticated" and "pure bred." Men of high society could pretty much do whatever they wanted in those times; Tom having a mistress from the middle class probably wouldn't be a big deal among his friends. But a woman of that class dating a man "beneath" her and cheating on her husband? That was considered social suicide. And now Daisy has committed a hit-and-run. Her reputation was already on the line, but manslaughter would have destroyed her legacy. Gatsby knew this and that's why he took the blame and that's why Daisy let him. That's why she never went to his funeral because she didn't want anyone else to know what really happened (guess Daisy forgot about Nick). She cared more about the life she always knew more than she did about Gatsby and he was so desperate to have her that he would do anything it took, any risk he could, to achieve his dream. It wasn't true love. It was obsession on one side and self-preservation on the other.

While I don't exactly agree with you view on the billboard I love what you wrote and I pretty much am in line with rest of it. I still hate Daisy, but it speaks of how complex her character is that she can make me feel so much. Gatsby really did have an obsession. He thought she was it. She was this golden girl of his dreams (if you look at Fitzgerald's biography it will give some true insight into this). He went through so much and he thought the only reason he didn't end up with her was cuz of money, but honestly, even if he had made it back earlier with Daisy's upbringing they couldn't have gotten married anyway, in my opinion. Daisy is such a complex character because you can see what she had to go through being Tom's wife and the fact she at one point really did loke Gatsby, but she loved her money and lifestyle more. She comes of as being shallow and deep at the same time. I hate not because of who she was but because of ehat she did in the end. That hurts, because no matter what anyone says Gatsby did not deserve it. And tom should go die. In the end, what nick said was right: "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."
@mycoffeequest6634

@@africandaughter3110 The thing is, even after reading the story before I saw this beautiful movie and knowing how it would all end, I still wanted Gatsby and Daisy to be together, despite the dysfunctionality between them. The scene with the shirts was a cinematic masterpiece in my opinion, not just because it's visually stunning, but because it so PERFECTLY captured the illusion of their "love" as Fitzgerald intended. I hadn't noticed in the book but when Gatsby says to Nick "she makes it look so splendid, doesn't she old sport?" (alluding to the house) that he's treating her as if she's the centerpiece of the mansion because it's a metaphor for how Daisy is suppose to be the final piece to achieving Gatsby's dream of a perfect life, which of course, is Fitzgerald's commentary on the trappings and illusions of the American Dream. Even the song they used was brilliant "will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful? Will you still love me when I've got nothing but my aching soul?" A movie is such a wonderful medium, especially on book adaptions (assuming it's faithful), because it offers perspectives on the story that we might have otherwise missed. Even knowing the lies, this movie made me want Gatsby and Daisy's relationship to work. Be careful though not to give Nick too much credit. It's suppose to be subtle, but if you read the story very carefully, you'll see that Fitzgerald intended for Nick to be an untrustworthy hypocrite. He's technically not considered middle-class because Nick has a small fortune, but he isn't considered rich either. Perhaps Fitzgerald was talking about himself here since he married into that life, but I also think he was talking about us, the readers, because of all the people in the story, Nick is the one we can relate to the most. And that was for a very deliberate reason: just because Nick was born outside of their world, and just because he claims that he's an honest observer, doesn't mean that he didn't have a hand to play in the events that unfolded. By extension, we're not innocent just because we're not wealthy. Nick uses the assumption that only the wealthy are responsible for their actions within their world and that people like Nick (people like us) can't be held accountable for what happens to these people SIMPLY because he isn't them, but that is a convenient excuse. It isn't true, because at least three times in the story, Nick could have indirectly prevented Gatsby's death: (1.) by refusing to lure Daisy to his house by Gatsby's request, even knowing what Gatsby intended AND ignoring the fact that his cousin was married WITH a child. (2.) by informing Tom, at any moment along the way, of what Gatsby was intending to do, and (3.) after learning about the accident, Nick could have called the police or rushed inside the house and tell Tom what really happened, but chose not to do either. Yes, it wasn't Nick's fault that Gatsby got killed and it would be easy to say "well she was trapped in an unhappy marriage", but that's just an excuse for us to use. That's just an excuse that Nick uses to distance himself from his involvement. We're led to believe that Nick dumped Jordan because she's callous, which she is, but it goes beyond that: more than anything else, he was trying to get away from New York and he needed Jordan out of his life to do that; he wanted to eliminate any reminders of that terrible summer. He's trying to convince the reader "see how I wasn't involved? See how this wasn't MY fault?" He knows he could have stopped it, but he didn't. This plays into Fitzgerald's commentary of his own times: "no one, not even the narrator, is innocent. Everyone is culpable. It's an age of loose morals." Even Nick's last name exposes him: Carraway. Because he got "carried away", swept up by the temptations of that careless life that had disastrous consequences for everyone involved. Now, I'm not trying to imply that Nick's observations were just flat out wrong, because he came to many accurate conclusions, but also notice that the one person in the book that he doesn't criticize is himself. It's called "The Great Gatsby", but the person that Nick puts into the best light happens to be himself, not Jay, whose flaws he largely ignores as well. And we know Gatsby wasn't perfect, so why does the narrator go so far out of his way to make him sound like he was such a great person, the best he ever knew, when he tried to destroy a family, covered up a hit-and-run, and used everyone, even Nick, as pawns to getting what he really wanted. His seething criticism of Daisy and Tom is so ironic because Nick and Gatsby were just as irresponsible; the narrator might as well call himself "the careless Carraway." Nick as a character is meant to go against our assumption that the narrator is 100% reliable simply because they're telling the story and he isn't telling us everything as it really happened. Fitzgerald was trying to say here that we all need to pay more attention to how we affect each other and just as it isn't an excuse for him to act any way he wants just because he married a rich woman, the same applies to those of us that are not as well off. Whew! Kudos if you read through that whole rant, lol.

@@Fahad-xe2zv Yeah, for a book that's just over 200 pages long, it has a lot of complexity if you look close enough. Sure it isn't perfect and the characters leave something to be desired, but the way Fitzgerald wrote it (especially his breathtaking use of lyricism) is impressive to me. It may not be as philosophically profound as some other books are, but the Great Gatsby is simple and sweet and sometimes, a simple narrative can speak volumes. I will always love it and I will sing its praises until the end of my days. :)

Yes, I agree! And your last paragraph ties in so beautifully with Gatsby’s quote, “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!” Gatsby spent years of his life trying to repeat the past with Daisy that he never really was present with her when he had her back for that short time, because he was so busy making everything perfect for her. But in a twisted way, he did repeat the past. Just as Daisy chose the wealthy, high-society life she knew over him in the past, she chose it again at the end, leading to his death and lonely funeral.

The fact that he threw all the parties that he did just to get her attention in hopes that she came and took the blame for her which in the end caused his demise and she couldn’t even come to his funeral. And it’s even worse that everyone that had no problem walking into his house and coming to his parties, also could not take some time to come either. In the end everyone failed him except Nick and it shows that he was the only one who cared for him, even after knowing him for such a short period of time when there were others who knew him way longer and didn’t even make an appearance. It shows that ppl will only be there when it’s beneficial for them and to watch who you call your “friend”

What’s so sad is that Gatsby’s love for daisy became delusional. he loved her so much he was so desperate and so blind to reality. even when she killed a man even when it was evident that she was not going to choose him he couldn’t bare to let himself see that possibility his love for her continued to persist no matter. so many times i wished someone could have grabbed gatsby and woke him up to the reality that the idea of success is not in daisy, that yes he loves her but to not have her doesn’t equal failure. for someone to comfort this man and for him to heal from this unfourtunate belief that many had in the 20’s of what the american dream really is. it’s all so tragic and it’s all so realistic

I know that this movie has gotten a lot of flack since it was made, but at the same time it does a good job of illuminating the more modern points the book was trying to make. In a way, I think Fitzgerald had it so that Daisy killed her husband's mistress on accident in accordance with the structured life she lived in. The mistress, and her romance with Gatsby were all contradictory to the "perfect marriage" of old money. So? Daisy kills Myrtle, and Tom arranges it so that Gatsby dies. Without regard for love, decency, or basic human care, they restore their perfect image. But only Gatsby's image is really pure.

If it weren’t for the never-ending analysis of this book in the literature classes, a lot of people would seriously think Gatsby appreciates Daisy’s presence out of true love. But nay!
@jnike5316
2 жыл бұрын
There is such a thing as over analysis of something quite simple. It's usually the intellectually proud that do it and then hoist their nose up in the air because they believe they have it all figured out. Gatsby was a simple and stupid man who DID love that woman. His "love" bordered on obsession but to claim that he wanted her as a prize or trophy like Tom is so willfully blind. There is no such thing as true love in a man's heart. Humans aren't capable of it. Gatsby is delusional, insecure and in love with this woman he considered to be ALL. She, like all things obsessed over, effectively became the death of him.

This is why jay is the only good person in the movie, and here is why: 1. Tom is a douche bag and cheats in daisy 2. Daisy never even bothered to tell Tom the truth, and stayed with him not bothering to go to the funeral 3.nick could have stopped this from happening ( other wise he did fine *i just put him in here because he could have saved him) 4. Jordan, well to be honest... daisy could have told her and show also could have helped nick stop his death

@@GingerBreadMan1178 Who cares if it was a hollow marriage? She did her vows, she chose her future, and it would have been better for Gatsby to have respected that and moved on, instead of making a huge, probably multi-million dollar plot to seduce her and steal her away from her husband and kid. Pretty sure divorced women in the 1920's did not get custody, especially if the cause of divorce was adultery on her part.

i personally think that Gatsby's love turned into obsession~to love to much can be a curse~Daisy, i think, she used to love Gatsby, but b/c of her marriage and her beliefs, she NEVER would have left Tom for Gatsby. the murdered girl"s sister did say Daisy was catholic. sleeping with Gatsby gave him hope and that was wrong.

But I got the impression that the revelation that Daisy was the one driving was supposed to be a huge pull-the-rug-out reveal, and I wasn't sure why it was? They both were acting reckless before getting into the car, they both showed a general disconcert for how their behaviors would effect others... why was it such a twist to know Daisy was the driver?
