"New York, 1922; the temper of the city had changed sharply. The buildings were higher, the parties were bigger, the morals were looser and the liquor was cheaper. The restlessness approached hysteria". Definitely, one of the best trailers, movies, and soundtracks ever!

It was symbolic of how dubstep and hip hop was when it first came out. It was underground music that new, upcoming youngsters listened to just like the jazz of the 1920's. In the 2 disc version there's an interview with director and he explains about it.

I think it fits the feeling of the story perfectly. I am not a big jazz buff, so I don't know if there was one that criticized the loss of values in economy, and if a jazz song would have conveyed that to a person growing up in the 90s and 00s. Music always conveys the feeling of its time, and this soundtrack connects Gatsby with today.

In the summer of 1922, the tempo of the city approached…..Hysteria. Stocks reached record peaks and Wall Street boomed in a steady golden roar. The parties were bigger, the shows were broader, the buildings were higher, the morals were looser and the ban on alcohol had backfired, making the liquor cheaper. Wall Street was luring the young and ambitious and I was one of them.

"Is pious pious 'cause God loves pious?"(1:02) is a question posed by Socrates in Plato's "Euthyphro" (Book 1 of 4 in "The Trial and Death of Socrates"). The next question is "or do the gods love what is pious because it is pious?" The issue at stake is whether piety, justice, righteousness etc. are considered so because God loves them or are they good in themselves and therefore God loves them. If the former, piety is arbritrary; if the latter, there is no need for God. #No Church in the Wild

That's why this was a Baz Luhrman film, not a historical documentary. Watch Romeo+Juliet and it makes sense... because he does just that. These are modern, fresh takes on old stories. Music especially is there to set the pace, not satisfy those wishing for period musical interludes.

I love this video and I love the great gatsby! I've never read the book but I love the movie! Other people in the theatre had popcorn but I had a bag full of eggs. I was eating eggs and laughing and the egg crumbs were getting on the people in front of me. Someone said I was scaring the children but I just kept eating like a unrestrained caveman. Several people beat me up after the movie.

This soundtrack works perfectly. Jazz was to the 1920s what rock and roll was to the 70s-90s: underground "youngling" music that was doomed to corrupt the morals of the youth. Hip Hop is that today. It fits perfectly with the tempo of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic.
