I had the honour to meet Barnes Wallace after a lecture. He shook the hand of every student afterwards, around 70 of us. It was not quite a lecture more a story. He didn't dwell on the dam busters raid, he obviously had regrets.

Early in WW2 Barnes's brother-in-law and wife were sadly killed in an air raid - Mr & Mrs Wallis immediately drove down and collected the two young children and raised them as their own - for me this is the measure of the man - there was no debate it was a situation that played out all across the land.

Definitely a genius! Incredible engineer. Emphatically he was an outside-the-box thinker truest to the definition. Individuality he said is the biggest contributor of the English to genius as Sir Barnes Wallis said. An engineer's way to stopping the war. A wow from me!

His ideas were proven and used later. The F111K and the 'Top Gun' aircraft all have swing wing attributes. The whole problem he pointed out with Concord was a single delta wing that was designed for high speed only. This meant it had to take off at high speed due to 'high wing loading' His designs could take off at the speed of a light aircraft; way below that of even, 'de Havilland Mosquitos' of WWII. Being the absolute gentleman, he didn't want his opinion on Concord being shown whilst he was still alive. What a true gentleman. Brilliant mind in a wonderful man. imho

I read that he was very critical of the fact that the F111 had a vertical stabiliser and tailerons which basically was not what Swallow was about. ALL flight control on the Swallow glider was by swinging the wings, which was demonstrated by the model flying all around the airfield. For powered flight, additionally, the tip mounted engines pivoted to provide the functions of rudder, ailerons and elevators.

Variable geometry does give those advantages, but it also creates a maintenance nightmare. The time and cost of it is why it primarily only exists in military craft like the F-111 and F-14. If you couple that with the stringent safety requirements of civilian flight, it becomes impractical. One of the many problems the Concorde suffered as well.

Barnes should have lived long enough to play James Bond. In his later years he was still a handsome bugger, and knew how to lift ONE eyebrow.

That was a lovely tribute to a man of such unbelievable thinking, that to say he was way ahead of his time is an understatement! Not wishing to sound rude to the comments below. I did not realise this but My parents and I got to know a man that had meet Sir Barnes Wallis in the mid 70'S as this man also had a plan for an airship at that time! His name was Roger Monk and he did go on to create new ideas with airships! He had one idea of a 1000ft long airship to transport gas in its natural state? Instead of turning it into a I think liquid and then shipped to wherever it was needed? Why oh why do we not listen to such men? Sigh!!

Please permit me to say that the standard of education back in England was much higher in those days. The more money got involved in higher education and doctoral research, the more perverted and commercialized things have become since the war ended. Dr Wallis got his degree in engineering in just five months and did such wonders. Whereas, nowadays, PhD students only compete with one another by publishing useless manuscripts of journal articles and monographs, to stay in their job as theoretical lecturers/ scholars.

Excellent video. The late John Scott Scott was very similar, modest and unassuming but above all a brilliant engineer who had to battle successive governments for funding as his ideas were ahead of his time.

There is no greater pleasure than to learn that you created something no one else had before and was not along conventional lines of thought...because you were too silly to realize it wasn't possible but it worked. Albeit, almost all such ideas are desperately flawed and thus best discarded. Barnes Wallis was a silly man with a very high batting average.

Concord is being resuscitated, Barnes Wallis plane would still today be the envy of the world. 275,000 ft, which would make every passenger an astronaut by NASA’s definition at a speed of 14,000 mph which is 90% of orbital velocity, FOR AN AIRPLANE, taking off as such.

A great man - charming, clear-headed and and engineering genius. Is this a BBC production? If so, what year was it produced, and who is the presenter? It might also be added that Tallboy bombs were used to destroy some of the biggest U-boat pens in France, whose roofs were many feet thick and thought invulnerable by the Germans. Not sure the Tallboys were used against V-rocket sites, but correct me if I'm wrong.. Concorde was partly given the go-ahead by the UK Government as a way of getting the UK into the EU, following two blocks by the French. Of course, French technical input into the project was zero. Worse was to come - and few people know this. The UK agreed with France and Germany to establish Airbus as a rival to Boeing. At the last moment the French refused to go ahead unless final assembly was in France. As a result, Bristol, then the epicentre of European aerospace, lost 100,000 top tech, top salary jobs to Toulouse. In fairness, the hypersonic engine that was required for Barnes Wallis' quick trip to Australia have not been perfected until quite recently, and much work needs to be done to ensure their complete safety in passenger aircraft. Barnes Wallis might be amused to know the initial funding for hypersonic engine firm Reaction Engines, which featured in my book of the UK's best 12 high potential companies, came from a grocery store in Worlds End, Chelsea.

A great bit of nostalgia - and interesting, that as the records have become declassified, and a lot more scrutinised, it's not quite as he makes out in this interview which reflects the scripting of the Dambusters film made when UPKEEP was still classified material. Nor could all of his amazing ideas be made to work, eg HIGHBALL, and the day of the airship was well and truly over when R100 was scrapped (and it wasn't even as good as the contemporary Graf Zeppelin for what that may be worth.)
