Great video, love seeing people talk about DG Compton. I talked about Farwells Earths Bliss, one of my favorite Mars scifi books, back when I did my Mars week episodes...not sure where that falls in chronologically haha, but it sounds like we all had the great idea to talk about it. I think i also mentioned him on a classic scifi video a couple of years ago, but i dont think the trend caught on back then...Very cool

As you'll have gathered, I first started reading Compton back in the 1980s. Anyone who mentions DGC gets my vote and of course, you are one of the good guys!!!

I enjoy these overviews very much. Glad to hear you are planning to do more! I just happen to have a video about Synthajoy scheduled for Monday. I also have a number of Compton’s novels on my Ace Science Fiction Specials TBR.

I covered 'Synthajoy' in more depth in my video entitled 'Mindwired' some time ago, though I assumed you'd get to it soon on your Ace Specials trail, good to hear you enjoyed it, it was an important book for him in North America. He deserves more attention and I'm glad to hear more people are reading him now.

Thanks for letting me know, Phillip - I'm surprised there's no mention of this at The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction website, though no doubt this will be updated. Very sad news, another giant of English Literary SF gone, pity the market didn't support his work after the late 1980s.

I've only read Synthajoy, and it blew me away. Since then I've slowly picked up most of the books you showed on the video. He is a revelation, and that is mostly thanks to you for mentioning and highlighting Compton's work on your channel.

A good overview of the books of someone I regard as one of the most important British SF writers... ever. Anyone who expects their fiction reading to at least make them think should read Compton. I wish you luck in finding those 1960s Hodder editions!

Hey Walter, good to hear from you. Yes, he had quite an output. As I said, I don't collect his crime and romance novels, but I've read everything else, great writer.

Thanks for that, I'm feeling much better re covid but am still suffering from Polymyalgia, but coping with it well currently. Yeah, "The Pure Product" is a great story and he's a neglected writer overall, well worth everyone's attention, pleased you're enjoying it!

Stopped by a new bookstore yesterday near Boston and found that exact Synthajoy Ace edition. Excited to read. Not much else there but I did take a chance on Tartarus Incident by Michael Greenleaf who I thought you may have discussed before. Worth the gamble either way. Thank you again for your wonderful channel.

Thank you for uploading this. FWIW I had a Dinky UFO Interceptor (which I remember as having been underwhelming). I'll have to get around to Compton.... eventually.... Of course you're right that eBooks are not the same. They require to be stored only on some "cloud" drive somewhere. Years ago, my friend Bill, returning from a trip to Waterstones, observed that: "These two for one book deals are all very well, but they don't pay for an extension of your house." My mum had a lot of Wilbur Smith, which is how I got to read his stuff. Edit: For the princely sum of 99p, I just downloaded an eBook of _Ascendancies._

'Ascendancies' is well written and typical of Compton's quieter work, though it's been many years since I read it....and the interceptor was green, which was a bit weird and yes, the limited edition reissue is green too (sigh).

Matt asked me about Compton before he'd read any as he'd come across 'Farewell' in a haul and as you've clearly seen, he loved it. Those two books are among DGC's most in-your-face and confrontational, but I personally prefer his slightly quieter works - 'The Silent Multitude' and 'The Continuous Katherine Mortenhoe' - but he's always thoughtful and fascinating. Let me know how you get on with them.

'Nomansland' is not bad, but see if you can find 'Farewell, Earth's Bliss'. In some ways, Compton has an affinity with Ken Macleod when KM was in his near future 'sf thriller' phase, books like 'The Execution Channel', 'Intrusion' and so on.

So, if I understand correctly, Compton's being a kind of outsider to SF is what makes his writing and ideas more interesting? (More subtlety, fresher takes?)
@outlawbookselleroriginal

Of course: SF is meant o jar the reader out of a sense of complacency - or it should if it is any good- and Compton defies expectations, I'd say.

I have to confess that though I own several Compton books, I have never finished one. I certainly intend to and will very soon now. I just noticed that your Ace copy is entitled Chronocules, while my Arrow copy is Chronicules, so there are three variants to this title. Does this make by battered old Arrow copy a first edition?
@outlawbookselleroriginal

Only in the sense that its a UK paperback first thus unless it's a reprint, but I suspect it only had one printing. The Michael Joseph hardcover I showed is the first edition per se.

Has anyone done a video about the women authors of Science Fiction?
@outlawbookselleroriginal
10 ай бұрын
Have you tried searching 'women' 'science fiction' 'SF''female' 'authors' and similar words? You should find plenty. I've done many videos where female SF writers are mentioned, focused on etc and there are many others. if you search using 'sci fi' you'll find more, but you won't get much truly expert material that way.
