This ladies and gents is what is called a villainous breakdown. A villainous breakdown happens when the villain snaps from actions of the hero or their plans are ruined. Villains that are broken are twice as dangerous than how they were before. The reason why is they don't have as rational thought and do things they normally wouldn't to annihilate whatever they are fixated on, and will harm anything around them to do it. Even their own allies and underlings, if they stand in the way. Rattigan's breakdown is my favourite breakdown because it was a slow build up and then he breaks. When his plan was ruined at the Palace he escaped taking Olivia hostage threatening to kill her if he was followed. Rattigan then threw a tantrum at her on the airship and cast his last loyal underling overboard when he complained. Rattigan was always composed when his plans were ruined in the past, he had this "it's no big deal." attitude. Now he doesn't, he was also very conscious about how others viewed him, he dressed well, had a high self esteem of himself. Until someone called him a Rat, you saw the monster briefly with this trigger word. He never liked to get his hands dirty so would rely on indirect methods to solve a problem, the execution methods at the lair for instance. He could have killed Basil right there but he chose not to, relying on his "genius" contraptions to kill him instead. Now the breaking point when Basil saves Olivia and runs, Ratigan had enough. He no longer cares about his clothes as he climbs the gears they are ripped, he no longer cares about being called a Rat. He doesn't want to think of a creative way to kill his enemy, instead he is relying on his strength, taking the task into his own hands directly. He has become the opposite of what he was before, his inner demon's chains are broken and it wants Basil dead.

Hey, little message to everyone, Ratigan isn't dead. How do I know? LOOK CLOSER AT THE FLIPPING CLOUDS!!! If you look closely, you can see the Thames River, into which Ratigan fell. In some comic somewhere, it shows that Ratigan did indeed, survive his fall. And even if he did die, he's still alive in the Descendants novels in the Isle of the Lost. He made a (Supposed) Appearance in Darkwing Duck and was in House of Mouse alive and well. So there's no way he could have died. If he survived a flipping HEART ATTACK, he probably somehow survived this.

My favorite scene of the whole movie. Props to Freeform for airing this movie…does not deserve to be underrated.

Ratigan considered himself a sophisticated gentleman and criminal mastermind but here he snapped and was full blown ready to end it with Basil here and now.

you know what's funny, I used to think Ratigan kicked her by accident because his cape was choking him but I can see now that he actually looks right at Olivia and deliberately kicks her, trying to kill her. This was a pretty dark Disney movie.

I only just now noticed that the music starts out very quiet and slow (building tension of course) but then it speeds up and gets more dramatic as soon as Basil speeds up the gears of the clock at 1:00 SO CLEVER!!

This is my all-time favorite scene in The Great Mouse Detective. I also like Ratigan's breakdown. I will be movie director, when I have a job. I will possibly bringing the 2-D animated movies from Disney and other movie companies in the future.

this is by far one of the most underrated disney villain scenes!!!! like the drama of it all! ratigan bitch slapping basil, olivia biting his hand off, ratigan on all fours chasing like a madman with his shirt all fucked, THE CAMERAWORK, and behind it all the constant ticking of the big fucking ben. the energy!

My re-imagining of lines 2:52 Ratigan: "I won! I won!" (Laughs wickedly) Basil: "Not so fast, Ratigan!" Ratigan: "Huh?!" (Stunned then looks down) Basil: "The game's not over yet! Losing something are we, Professor?" (Sticks out and rings the bell) Ratigan: "What?!" (Checks his empty pocket as the clock hand moves and finally strikes) Ratigan: "Noooooo! (Grabs Basil while falling after losing his balance) If I'm going, you're coming with me! (Continues falling with Basil) Noooooo!"

Due to a rat's large surface area in proportion to their weight, Ratigan probably survived that fall. Physics!
