Great info on the gearing and links. VERY helpful since I’m researching options to do the same thing too.

So glad I found your vlog. I'm seriously thinking PEBL so I can follow my son when he gets his recumbent trike. His dream is to compete in special olympics when he does. My PEBL would be used as a "support vehicle" and "recreational vehicle" because we live in NE Penna and "flat" is seldom part of the geography. I appreciate the info/opinions you are sharing. Can't wait until the newby problems get ironed out for BetterBike and we get these puppies on the roads. I want to see lots of vlogs and comments when you and others start the experience. Thank you for your time and input. It's great. (PEBL is in my savings budget for now)

The Schlumpf Mountain Drive, is expensive it's $555.00, you can buy a whole bike for that amount, that's going to increase the cost of the Velomobile substantially. That's something you could fit yourself, if you were so inclined, it's a lot of money for people who don't need the feature...

Carl Hewitt to totally agree. Once I get the PEBL I'm going to do some testing and may find that something like that isn't worth getting. All of the crank sets have in common a direct 1:1 drive and then 1-2 overdrive gears. If I'm not able to gear down the PEBL to near 17-20 gear inches then having an overdrive gear will be worthless.

Why did you not show off the windshield of the pebl? Why does no one show off the windshield what do they think it is useless because if I'm getting one and it's raining I need to know what boutton it is and plus ain't windshield a safetyfeature?

How many hours riding does the battery charge last for? What is the wattage and voltage? What type of brakes does it have? what size tires does it have? Are they 26in? Do they come in Fat Tire? What is the quality of the seat because it looks fairly cheap to me. I'd like to see a nice recumbent seat with padding also height-adjustable because I am short and want to make sure I see well out the front window. What is top speed. I know that they make a lot of bikes with a top speed of 60 miles per hour. Although I probably would have no desire to go that fast it's just nice to know if it can in case of emergency and need to get somewhere fast. I would like to see an average speed of 35 miles per hour though. I don't drive cars anymore I need an electric bicycle to get around don't want to limit myself to only 20 miles per hour though. How much is it and where do I order one if I decide to get one?

Theresa, Battery on the basic PEBL is for 25 miles - which depending on the hills etc may be up to 1.5 hrs of riding time. If you're doing more pedaling, and it's on flat ground, not using the electric motor, then you can get more time. I have the 25 mile AND 50 mile batteries, so in theory I could do 75 miles in moderate hilly conditions with no pedaling at 3.5 hours. Personally I pedal all the time and I'm able to charge only once a week on the 25 mile battery. Flat conditions mostly with a few short hills, all pedaling, 31 miles approx. With the 50 mile battery I can go a couple of weeks without charging. Top speed is limited to 19.5 mph on the electric motor. Of course going down a hill I've gotten up to 26mph. You'd never want to go over 30 I think it would be unsafe. You can either get the PEBL with a 24" x 2" tire or with a rim/tire upgrade to heavy-duty rims and 3" tires. All PEBLs have 24" tires all around. If you choose to order one, base price is now just under $8000. As equipped, mine would be about $9500 if ordered today. Go to www.better.bike to order and let them know you heard about it from my channel so I get credit! Thanks!

Regarding gear ranges, terrain, and expectations, aka "So, this one time at bike camp..." One Sunday morning in the 1980's, an hour or two after dawn, I'm riding my mid-priced Trek touring bicycle towards St. Charles, Illinois, on a level highway with a beautiful new road surface, no wind to speak of. I'm cruising along in top gear, giving the legs some extra output in the cool air. A county deputy drives up behind me and I just wait for him to pass around. He doesn't, but whatever, I don't care. I'm an adult just riding here, and he's a cop with no emergency to rush off to, apparently... So, after a little bit, he puts on his roller lights; and I look back at him and then sideways at the otherwise empty road, like: "Dude, you've got 3 lanes to go around me, what's up? After a few seconds of this I sigh and coast down to a stop, and he gets out of his squad car and comes up with a restrained smirk on his face. I say: "Hi, can I help you?" Deputy: "Hello. Nice morning, yah?" Me: "Yah, it's great. Awesome new surface on this road. Really smooth ride." Deputy: "I see that. Do you know the speed limit on this section of highway?" Me, confused at what seems like an irrelevant question: "I dunno, 40 miles per hour or so, I suppose." He looks at my state ID and over at my bike, maybe sees I don't have a speedometer (because wtf real riders are about maintaining steady pedal reps, not total speed -- it's about the journey, using the gears to "match the load to the road," as it were). Deputy: "...and how fast do you think you were going?" Me, still wondering but enthusiastic for the day: "Well, nice road, good weather, maybe 25 or 30. It's a great day for it." Deputy, starting to grin openly: "Well, I checked you with the radar gun, and I wasn't sure I believed it, so I paced you with my speedometer. Actually, the speed limit in this stretch is 35. You were going... 55 miles an hour." I failed to stifle my shocked laugh: "What?! Really?! That's amazing!" Deputy, also laughing a bit: "Yah, you were at 55. There's no traffic and it's clear visibility, so I won't give you a ticket today; but you should realize how fast you might be going in case there's cars around on in-town roads. They may not be expecting a bike to be going at highway speeds." Me: "Okay, thanks for that. I'll keep it down-gear in town. Really, 55?" Deputy: "Really!" I almost asked him to write me an official warning slip, just so I had a document to show my friends later. [For metric readers, that was pure pedal-power on level ground at just under 100 kph; and I wasn't a Tour-de-France competitor, just some guy who loves to ride.] We both laughed again and said a couple pleasantries before going our separate ways. Most people think that performance is all about huge engines and million-dollar alloys, and yes that's one way to get it. Much of the time, however, it has a lot to do with who's riding, and in what conditions :)

animist channel great story! I was once riding back into town on hwy 99 towards Eugene. Seemed like a pleasant no-wind day but I knew something was up because people drive 55-60 on this road (45mph limit) and they were just barely passing me. I was in the drops on my Bike Friday Rocket in top gear 119.5 gear inches just cranking along at a pace I could maintain all day. It wasn’t until I headed East that I discovered the 20+ mph tail wind I was enjoying that I understood the boon I had for those five glorious miles.

Thank you for documenting your experience! You have helped me chart a new path for mobility. I can't drive cars anymore because of a progressive neuro condition, but velo's look like a way to get back out there at a safe speed as my joints do the aging thing and weather continues to happen. I'm loving your adventure series, so bless you so much for taking the time to share!

Surely you would need a very much larger gear on the rear a 40 if you are to go up all but small to medium sized hills.
@EricFischnaller

David Macdonald in actuality the gearing works really well. I’m able to pedal up moderate hills but it’s a lot of work without the motor but can be done in a pinch. Mostly you’ll find it easy with the electric motor engaged as long as the PEBL isn’t overloaded or very low on power

What about getting a flat in a tire how difficult is it to change a flat? I understand they have some new type of foam filled tires which means it will never ever ever get a flat. Is that the type of Tire on here? What about locking it so if it's driven somewhere in town and parked in a public parking area how does it get locked up securely so nothing gets stolen? What is the warranty on it?

Theresa, changing a flat tire is a real pain. Personally, I purchased the fat tire option which has really robust 3" tires along with thorn resistant tubes. You could run Stans tube sealer as you alluded to which probably would be a good idea. If the puncture was on the front tires, it really wouldn't be too bad except for the fact that you'd have to jack up the front of the PEBL in order to remove the wheel. Personally, I signed up for a Roadside assistance plan with Better World Club in order so if there is a flat, they'll come and pick up my PEBL and do the repair. Carrying a jack that will work with the PEBL, tire levers, wrenches and the like isn't something I'm really interested in doing. So far (knock on wood) I haven't had any issues and I've been riding practically daily since the first of November. Locking the PEBL: If I am parking in a single parking space like a car, I run a U-Lock through the rear wheel and rear swingarm to isolate the PEBL. It has a key which makes it so the electronics don't turn on and without the assist, it's a pretty slow ride - with hills it's practically impossible so nobody will be getting away from you without that. When I can, I lock to a bike rack or post, etc like you'd lock a bike to. If I have anything in the front area of the PEBL that I don't want to walk away such as a water bottle, my garage door clicker, etc, I place these in the rear storage out of sight which locks. Of course a dedicated thief that didn't mind damaging the seats could get in here easily, so don't store anything valuable in there! Warranty on the PEBL is 1 year and Better.Bike has been very responsive to issues and paid for shipping for components/repair pieces that I've needed.

Please upload or at least comment on whether you can perform a decent hill climb unassisted. That would be the best window into how strong they specked the motor controller and wiring.

Ajemo Haltom will do. I'm planning to do some significant testing once I get the PEBL and plan to ride up and over 30th and Cityview which are both long hills. Cityview in particular is both long and steep so it'll be a good test.

Better still, a side by side performance comparison to the ELF. mostly for a reference point. The definition of a decent hill climb is arbitrary without a basis for comparison.

Fran Aguirre pray its one of your front tires... otherwise I’m calling roadside assistance. Between the wrenches and need for a jack it’s not the easiest to get that rear wheel off and not make a real mess of your hands and work clothes

I look forward to seeing what you do with the front gear rang. When you do change the front will you use and test it with the stock rear gear set? I'd be interested to know how it works with what's on there that way I can decide if it would be worth wild to change out just the front. I also might consider something like that for my WAW! I have a Rolhof 14 gear speed hub on the rear right now. Also will you be hosting a video of the instal of the new front gear set when you find the one you want? I'd like to get more of a peddling workout than what I think I'm going to get with the current elf set up. Good work on this video best one yet.

VeloVloger when I worked at Bike Friday we did a touring bike with Rohloff and a Sclumpf. The gear range was ridiculous. One of the main concerns I had was weight on a bike like that because the schlumpf drive is heavy. On a 200# bike like the PEBL, that's not really an issue. If and when I do something like using one of these cranks, I'll definitely detail it on the channel. Thanks for following my channel!

Wow. Thanks for the videos. I really appreciate your reviews. In regard to the lack of a front derailleur have you thought about adding a schlumpf drive? I have never used one but I am dealing with a similar problem on an upright ebike that lacks the ability to have a front derailleur. They're not cheap but they have good reviews. Here's the link and thanks for the reviews I am gonna sub. www.schlumpfdrive.com/index.php/home-en.html
