The real Catherine the Great was emotionally stunted. To her, everyone was a chess piece that needed moving or countering (which was why she was so ruthlessly efficient as an autocrat). Fun fact: When her son Paul's wife died, he fell into a deep depression and was inconsolable. How did Catherine respond? By revealing that his dead wife had been banging his only friend. She genuinely thought this would "snap him out" of his current state. And she literally coerced Voltaire (someone who fucking hated Autocrats) to somehow write propaganda for her.

It is worth remembering that Peter the Great had his own son, Alexei, whipped to death using a knout. The knout was the most savage whip devised, it could cut through to the bone with each stroke (even where the muscle was thickest). He was whipped not once but many times before he died.
