The speech might be fiction, but the numbers quoted are absolute facts. And before anyone jumps on me thinking I'm a flaming liberal, I served in the US military for almost 7 years during the illegal invasion of Viet Nam, not because I agreed with it, but simply because my country called. I defied the odds and actually returned to college and graduated with a degree in engineering. In that career, I had the great pleasure of working in over 35 countries. I have visited these countries, walking the back streets, watching the people and their children, and when possible, having a conversation ad equals. I have come to learn that the people on the streets are pretty much the same world over and want pretty much the same things. The problem is governments, not that they are inherently evil, but that the people who gain control of them are.

Greatest country? Rankings We aren’t the worst but we certainly aren’t the “greatest”. Whenever anyone mentions greatest country, it makes me think of the old Newsroom clip with Jeff Daniels. Let’s look at the updated stats from 2021/22 (mostly from 21/22, a few are updated) of what he mentioned and some additional stats. According to the 2021 Human Freedom Index, the US isn’t even in the top 10. Switzerland - 9.11 New Zealand - 9.01 Denmark - 8.98 Estonia - 8.91 Ireland - 8.90 Finland - 8.85 Canada - 8.85 Australia - 8.84 Sweden - 8.83 Luxembourg - 8.80 (The US was 23rd according to this and according to another was 19th). In literacy we are ranked 125th in the world (as of 2024). Math we are 25th. Science we do well in some ways and are ranked number 1 but ironically we came in 3rd in a world science competition despite our number 1 ranking. Life expectancy we are 60th. Infant mortality we are 50th (Yes, the way those stats are compiled vary across the globe. The data comes from UNICEF and World Health Organization.) Household income we are 7th (keep in mind as a country we are top 10 most expensive countries to live in but specifically by cities some are even more expensive to live in. For example NYC is ranked second most expensive city to live in in the world). Labor Force we are 3rd. Exports we are number 2. (What do we export? Medical and pharmaceutical are big exports but oil/petroleum is usually number one and cars/car parts are also major exports). Incarceration rates we are number 1 (being number 1 in prison population isn’t a good thing. For profit prisons in the US is one of the main reasons we have the largest prison population. 2/3 prisoners are “working” while locked up, basically making them indentured servants.) Angels??? Not sure where we are ranked but according to a poll from the Associated Press 8 out of 10 people believe in angels in the US. Defense spending we are still number 1 (and out spend at least the next 10 nations combined). Bonus: Press Freedom Index we are 42nd. Freedom of expression we are ranked about 28th. Happiness we are 23rd (as of 2024). Paid vacation days, the US isn’t even in the top 30. Number 1 is Austria and Number 30 is Japan. Overall healthcare ranking is 18th (and we don’t even cover everyone; something every other industrialized nation does). Víolent críme ràtes we are ranked 94th (safest and this isn’t a good thing) Taxes? We actually take home less than 50% of our paychecks after federal taxes, state taxes and healthcare deductions. That doesn’t even include 401k deductions and union dues (if you are in a union). How about hours worked? On average, Americans work 137 more hours every year than Japanese workers - who we perceive as chronically overworked, 260 more hours than British workers, 394 hours more than the average uber-efficient German worker, and a whole 499 more hours per year than workers in France. Out of the approximately 200 countries in the world, 134 have laws capping the maximum number of hours an employee can work, including every industrialized nation. However, the United States is one of the minority countries and the only industrialized nation without laws setting the maximum hours of work in a week.

We should dispense with the aspiration to “be liked” or to be regarded as the repository of a high-minded international altruism. We should stop putting ourselves in the position, of being our brothers’ keeper and refrain from offering moral and ideological advice. We should cease to talk about vague and-for the Far East-unreal objectives such as human rights, the raising of the living standards, and democratization. Watch all of Newsroom if you haven’t already. Also this clip is better taken in context of the series. I think some of you may be watching it and miss the theme about the importance of a free press that seems to be a big theme.

Don’t know how you got Magazine out of that speech. We were informed, we cared about each other, war on poverty not poor people. Where do you find Maga in those morals. Explain it to me cause I don’t know what you are talking about

@@morgandastrup6576why does having a low opinion of something make the person sad? Would it not be better to wonder if that view is objectively held for factual reasons rather than dismiss their opinion?

@liamdevlin5980 I am allnfor people.having their opinion. But to say that America is not the "greatest" country in the world is not factually honest or true. The United States for all its flaws, is the most equitable and fair countries in the world. No other country can offer people what the United States has offered.
