@@bodgiesteve8849no, it wasn’t just an import. It was locally manufactured by Holden Engine Company in Port Melbourne from July 1988 to march ‘95 in a spec similar to the US series 1 style form (balance shaft, no distributor) then April ‘95 to 2004 in “series 2” or “ecotech” form with the shorter deck height, but a unique to Australia inlet manifold and plenum. The L67 was introduced in Sept ‘96 and ran to 2004. Early ones of them used imported LIMs and heads, but they were quickly localised when the L67 proved popular with buyers. In the early VN days (‘88) some of the bolt-on parts (like the inlet) were imported just to keep up with production, but the block was cast here, so too the heads & crank, in the foundry at HEC, alongside the family 2 inline 4, and from March ‘89, the 5.0L EFI V8. The 3.8 ceased production in Australia to make way for the HFV6 (alloytec) in 2004. Both forms of 3.8 are well known in Australia as being very reliable, and we didn’t have the major issues the US did, because we can put them together properly down under 😂😂. Actually, the early ecotecs in ‘95 did have some issues getting the fancy new low friction rings to seat, causing oil consumption, but this was fixed fairly quickly. We’ve had several Aussie made 3.8 ecotecs in the family that were incredibly reliable - over 485,000km on one of them. Still have an L67 too.

I was putting Aussie 3.8s into a few different cars back in the 90s, with great results (power and reliability) as they were almost bolt-in for earlier commodores. One of my university mates had a Gemini (the Aussie version of the T car) and his father had a written off VN (no insurance). After a bet I couldn’t refuse, we put the V6 and 4L60 into his Gemini. It went like a bat out of hell. Because of the diff setup in the Gemini, we had to adapt a commodore tail shaft front section, to the Gemini, and it became the weak link (until we blew the diff). But the body twist condemned that car. It would twist so bad it would pop the front windscreen out of the rubber when you launched it. When you got home you often couldn’t open the doors on the left side. But man that thing was fun until the registration was due, and we couldn’t get it engineered to pass inspection.

That’s awesome! My buddy has ran a supercharged 3.8 Regal in 14 enduros and still goes! But, my 3.6 VVTI in my 2012 LTZ Impala has more nutz! But that 3.8 in the Chevette being as light as it is, would probably give a GNX a Hell ofa run! Fun daily Dude!

The 3800 is BY FAR...THE...BEST...production engine EVER, to come out of Detroit! PERIOD !!!

I do keep forgetting about these. I have a Tacoma and hardbody that I plan to swap, but space is the biggest issue with the engines I’ve been considering. A 3800 would fit perfect and probably be pretty cheap to do

we use to make fun of Chevettes as kids but it's perfect for a project car. light weight and rear wheel drive.. GNX V6 would be killer in that car.

The 3800 has gone down in history as the most reliable engine. Every one knows the 3800.

My friend in the late 90s put a Cammed, Ported, NA 4.1L Buick with 4bbl Carburetor in a Chevette with a Turbo 350C (yeah I know) it absolutely killed the New 4.6L GT Mustangs at the "country ¼ mile" - They hated seeing that 'vette!

Agree, had a car salesman friend who swore by that engine.

Well, i thought at first, you was going to say a Pontiac iron duke, boosted or the dodge omni, Four banger, boosted! They run forever but no, you said my third and believable definite, a 3800, 3.8! Plenty out there, different from the bigger car 3.8, a way smaller block and configuration. Chevette is sweet and I'd love to see a Citation build, put on an all wheel drive frame.

Funny you mention the LS.... You may be happy to hear the late 90's-early 00's LS lifters are a direct drop in upgrade for that 3800 because they borrowed some 3800 to make the LS.

I gotta say, this'll piss off the other brands, engines like the 4 mentioned, were/are the strength of General Motors. Make a good one from the beginning, if people take care of them, they just go and go and go.👍🏻
