As a kid I made Hammond organ cabinets. The tolerances for things like holes drilled were 5,000 of an inch, just ridiculous, but those were the specs we were given. There were a lot of hoops we had to jump though in making the cabinets. Another was the wood grain, no wild grain was allowed, they wanted calm. I was quite proud knowing I had a hand in finish product. We did Thomas organ cabinets as well. Hearing them played by pros is a treat, thanks!

interesting. Did you work in one of the Chicago factories?
@WoodGuy
2 жыл бұрын
@@HVYMETL No, the factory was in Monrovia, Calif. We made all the cabinet parts and never knew, or asked, where they were shipped to for the guts to be installed. We must have been good at it because we also made the cabinets for Thomas organs. We were a one-stop shop, we produced and pressed our own veneers. Huge shop with every piece of woodworking machinery there was. I mainly ran the edge bander and 18 spindle boring machines.

True. My 1949 B2 has been hauled all over the US and now resides in my family room next to a 1955 B3. The '55 was purchased new in Las Vegas by my neighbor's mother in '55 and after she passed (about 20 years ago) I purchased it from her daughter, so it's only known 2 homes since '55 and likely only had her fingers and mine on the keyboards. The '49 on the other hand...has been all over the US and pounded to death....and looks it. But I can play both and 'most' can't tell the difference, (although I can). The keys are a tad softer on the '49... Love 'em both.

I'm a jazz pianist. I had a hammond C3 (1961) and leslie 147 rotary speaker and PR40 straight speaker. I got into James Taylor Quartet first, then Jimmy Smith, then Joey Defrancesco, and I play straight jazz organ. I sold the hammond a few years ago, but recently, I've been aware of the playing of Cory Henry and his gospel organ. It is some journey. IMO Gospel organ is much more of an artform and it's so fking amazing. He does a tune called "he keeps on doing great things for me". Just listen to that end to end. It blows this whole list into the weeds. If I had a hammond, I'd sell it. There is just no way of doing that. I see Billy Preston didn't make it either. He did a tune called "music is a voice of god". Chord voicings and drawbar settings are just off the scale.

what "attitude?"
@armstronglance
Жыл бұрын
@@TheLarryBrown Hammond attitude! Answer: Lot of volume pedal dynamics, and Leslie slow/fast changes made at just the right places in a song or solo. And of course glissandos and arm smears up/down the keyboard at just the right spots in a song. An example of the wrong thing to do, is to switch a leslie to fast speed and leave it there for a long time. You don't do that with a wah wah pedal... just leave it down or up, no you rock it up and down at strategic points. Same with a guitar's whammy bar, you do your bends down or up at strategic points, not just up and down continuously at a regular rate. Attitude man!
