Welcome to "Southern Rock" - yes, there are a number of Southern Rock bands that kick ass...ALLMAN BROTHERS, MOLLY HATCHET, LYNYRD SYNYRD, MARSHALL TUCKER BAND, OUTLAWS to name a few. And, so many great songs such as "Whipping Post" by Allman Brothers for an example. But, enough of this BAND-MAID fan going off on his love for good ol' USA roots rock/blues that he grew up with back in the stone age. Great reaction, Mark. Thank you for taking the time to explore places you haven't been yet.

Speaking of sincere, you really, REALLY should catch their live performance at Oakland that's on KZitem. I saw them the year before in Seattle, and they just about made my knees go to jelly. The interdynamics are even more wonderful when you can watch them ROCK in that live venue. It would be worth putting up on your reaction channel here. It really would.

Aside from the music, the lyrics speak to any young man who has ever felt trapped by a relationship and realized it just wasn't for him. Time to hit the road, babe...gotta jet! Almost every single man alive can relate. It's also what ultimately became of the band (esp. lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant) not more than 4 years after the release of this album. As I'm sure you've picked up from other comments, the band's plane went down and the singer, lead guitarist, and a backup singer died. Hence, the meaning took on a whole 'nother meaning after that. And the solo(s)...off the freakin' hook.

Mark, have you been held captive in some musicless prison for the majority of your life 🤣🤣 "things I know about Lynrd Skynyrd ... silence". Sweet Home Alabama is a skynyrd song. But no it's fair, you might not know that it's their song. But if your next skynyrd reaction is you saying you've never heard Sweet Home Alabama, then the captive joke turns too real 🤣🤣🤣. To answer your question I prefer this over stairway and can't wait to find out what's next, you've got a good variety going Recommendations Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man - live Capitol Theatre Lynyrd Skynyrd - Call Me The Breeze ( cover of JJ Cale, if you want to check the original there is a live version with JJ Cale and Eric Clapton )

I would say that Freebird is the most epic guitar solo ever... especially since it's two guitar solos at once. As a composition overall, I prefer Stairway to Heaven. The dynamics are just more potent, and the crescendo from Stairway is the bit of music most guaranteed to give me chills when I hear it. I don't get that with Freebird. Note that while I'd say it's the most epic solo, I would say that the best solos are the live ones by David Gilmour on live versions of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, and the most impressive guitar-work would be Stevie Ray Vaughn playing Texas Flood live at Mocambo. For most grandiosely technical solo, see Ingwie Malmsteen doing Far Away Beyond the Sun. For the most mind-bendingly technical solo... probably something by Tosin Abasi that only four people have listened to on the B-side of one of the Animals as Leaders albums. For the smoothest improvisation, it's probably something by Guthrie Govan. For the most gut-wrenchingly powerful blues guitar solo, see Parisian Walkways by Gary Moore, live. For most energetic, going for it beyond your abilites solo, that would be Gary Moore again, doing Shapes of Things, especially the "live and incredible" version (which is almost a parody of itself). For the best "showing off, and I don't care about melody" solo, see the classic Eddie Van Halen solo. For the "can we really call this a guitar solo, with that instrument" guitar solo, that would be Steve Vai doing Teeth of the Hydra on that... guitar... thing. And for the "most innovative for the time" solos, see anything at all by Jimmi Hendrix. As you can see, there's lots of "best" guitar solos out there.

Its an ok song..but to be totally honest here, the best with this song is the video from the concert in Oakland California in 1977...that live performance was magical..both from the band and the audience...besides that, the guitars is the main thing with this song, that is good..not overwhelming good, but good..

certainly the greatest jam session of all time, that's for sure. you especially need to watch the live version, Oakland '77 (on your own time, by all means -- but it _does_ need to be watched). it's not necessarily weird that you haven't ever sat down to listen to this previously - particularly considering that you seem a bit young (or maybe your inability to grow a proper beard is tricking me) - what's weird is that you wouldn't have heard this at least in passing (of course, i grew up in Appalacia, so my perceptions may be a bit skewed ... i have no idea what scottish radio is like). if you've ever seen Forest Gump or Devil's Rejects, then you have heard this, even if you didn't realize it at the time.

Today's musicians seem to reach for effects pedals and wizardry before they play anything clean. Why? The reason the classic rock works is because they learnt how to use them sparingly first. Think about Mark Knopfler. It's all in his fingers first.
