This may be a very old movie but I have to say it is my favourite movie about the Saviour. I watched many movies about the Saviour but somehow this movie just gets me a lot. The greatest film version of the life of Jesus, made with devotion, dedication, technical expertise, and a clear vision of what the end result should be. George Stevens put his heart and soul into this film, and it shows! I have appreciated this film more as an adult, and have seen it more than once. It is unsurpassed in its visual splendour, captured in the western United States. It is blessed with a fine cast, beginning with the inspired choice of Max Von Sydow. No other portrayer of Christ matches him in voice, screen presence, or depth. He is in the company of an excellent supporting cast: Charlton Heston, Jose Ferrer, Telly Savalas, Joanna Dunham, Donald Pleasance, and David McCallum - to cite a few examples. The "star cameos" don't damage the film at all, once you are focused on the actual story and its larger meaning. And quibbling about changes to the original scriptures is meaningless; any film would have to make changes in order to maintain a visual and narrative flow. Mr Stevens had every reason to be satisfied with his film; hopefully future generations will offer it more appreciation than it received upon its initial release.

People have always been ruled by gossip and spotting "all those famous faces" is just gossip. Just about everyone in GSET was wonderful. Claude Rains, Telly Savalas, Heston, Ferrer. Jesus' meeting with Herod ( Ferrer ) is handled so naturally you don't even notice how artfully it's accomplished. Stevens' art is the art which hides itself. I may not be a Biblical scholar, yet even so, this movie is not just about The Passion. This is the whole life of Jesus Christ - from his beginnings as a baby in Nazareth to his parents Joseph and Mary, to His teachings, to the parables, to the time He took out the money exchangers in the temple, to the time He stopped stoners from killing off an adulteress to His arrival to Jerusalem, to the creation of his 12 disciples, and of course, the Passion - from the time He was betrayed and arrested and put on trial--to His nailing on the cross before He died, and of course, the resurrection and ascension.

This was an excellent documentary in that it gives people on the outside a better view of the behind-the-scenes work of what it takes to make a film. When "The Greatest Story Ever Told" came out, I was looking forward to it. I bought Alfred Newman's marvelous soundtrack and prepared myself for what I thought would be a great film. But unfortunately, it failed. Despite Heston's defense of Stevens' casting, it was a mistake to fill the cast with big names. It was as if autograph hounds would run on the set to get everyone's autograph. Particularly obscene was John Wayne's one line. When I heard "Truly this man was the Son of GOD," I couldn't help it. I burst out in full-throated giggles. Any minute I was expecting a cameo with Gabby Hayes. What a shame because when one views films such as "Gunga Din," "Penny Serenade," "Woman of the Year," "The Talk of the Town," "I Remember Mama," "A Place in the Sun" and"The Diary of Anne Frank," those are the films which show George Stevens' greatness.

George Stevens' " The Greatest Story Ever Told " (1965) is a great film by a great director and your giggles @ John Wayne's risable line -- one of the worst in the New Testament -- reading shows how superficial you are. If you were paying attention you would have seen that the "conversion " of Wayne's centurion didn't come out of thin air because Stevens shows Sidney Poitier carrying Jesus' cross and how moved he was before he says "Truly this was the son of God. " Michael McDonagh on George Stevens

@@michaelscribe4827 I get what he was going for. John Wayne was just the wrong actor, and its suprising Stevens did not see that. Most of the other cameos sort of work (Savalas) Some are truly inspired (Ed Wyn, Donald Pleasence). Then there is Jamie Farr, Roddy McDowell etc but so brief they make little impact. John Wayne nearly ruins it with one line- a casting/acting blunder so legendary its part of any discussion of the film. Religious fanatic will always find something to object to, even if a film closely follows the Bible. Even the gospels differ from eachother. Which one do you use? Truth is , there is so little historical evidence about Jesus, and the accounts were written long afterward. This versions is just as valid as any other. And I find it quite moving and inspiring and several places. I'm agnostic, which maybe allows me to see it as a film, which is what it is, and not a holy ritual which the director gets right or wrong.

@@jefolson6989 Dear Jef Olson My real name is Michael McDonagh -- www.culturevulture.net -- and I've written lots on George Stevens' films for www.culturevulture.net and www.ebar.com, and my work on his films -- GSET in particular -- has been quoted without attribution on Stevens' GSET in the GS bio on www.imdb.com, though I'm happy someone apparently liked what I said. It's a flat line which has no rhythm, and there's poor Duke forced to say it. But no one seems to remember that Wayne as the centurion is seen in long shot before his "big moment." Savalas' performance as Pilate is not a cameo because he was given substantial screen time, and it's a valid interpretation of what this real historical character may have been like though Donald Pleasance's take on him in the Alex North-scored -- The Passover Plot is more acerbic. Michael McDonagh www.alexnorthmusic.com. - Wynn was very good -- he was wonderful as Mr Dussell ( sp ) in Stevens' The Diary of Anne Frank ( 1959 ) as was Pleasance as The Dark Hermit -- McDowell and Farr, though given relatively little screen time, were fine. and the big baddies all aced their parts. The best scene in the film may well be Jesus before Herod Antipas ( Jose Ferrer ) because it's shot non-judgmentally and played completely off hand. Even with loads of extant research on 1st Century AD Palestine we still know little of how the things depicted in GSET may have happened and there are glaring inaccuracies -- the release of the prisoner Barabbas ( Richard Conte ), for example, which historians believe was a compete invention -- and my Dead Sea scholar friend Bob Eisenman details how the drinking of Jesus' blood motifs was used to pitch Christianity to the pagans who saw nothing wrong with drinking blood though the Jews -- and subsequently the Muslims -- are adamantly against this practice. GSET remains a great, striking, and very moving film, and this doc on it is a treasure trove of info on how Stevens and company interpreted this impossible subject. The movie bombed at the box office, and rightly so. It did better on television as the commercials broke up the monomtony of the film. The movieis way too long with very little action. When it was originally released, anyone who was anyone wanted to be in the movie, and this distrtacted the audience as they were to busy pointing out the cameos than paying attention to the screen. Decades later, modern audience, not knowing who most of these celebrities are, would not have this problem. Von Sydow gave a commanding performance and it was the first time Telly Savalas totally shaved his head for a role.

How about possibly his role as Abner Hale in the George Roy Hill epic drama movie “HAWAII”, based upon the 1959 novel by James Mitchener?

This is why Von Sydow didnt want to do it. Religious people , in their arrogant ignorance believe they know the TRUTH. Films are not truth and are not bound by fidelity to the original text, which many wil site as the Bible. Its an orininal script based on many sources, or invented for the sake of drama and visual impact. If God was displeased, he would have rained down fire on the cast and crew right?

Obviously it looks like you have once too often read Darwin’s “ORIGIN OF SPECIES”.
