that area is legendary. the 3 Hampden's. one of them being Cathkin Park, former home of Third Lanark AC. Lesser Hampden now home to Queen's Park. the original home friendlies and 'world championships'. top stuff.

Very interesting I had no idea a Scot started the FA William Macgregor I've just googled him he is actually 1 of 2 men involved in setting up either an association or a famous football club from the same area as me I'm From a village called Doune in what used to be perthshire now Stirling not far from where William Macgregor was from Braco only criticism I have of Lyndsay is she pronounced it wrong it's Pronounced Brae- co as in Same pronunciation as the start of Braehead Shopping centre. The other Famous football man from my area was William McBeath (1 of the 4 young lads who set up Rangers) hewas born in the town of Callander near where I live aswell, I only found this out about both these men very recently as there is no proper plaque etc.. or common knowledge of them which is wrong both done amazing things. I've spent most of my 36 years in the area and never heard anything about them 😕

That was a lovely documentary. Now I would like to visit Cathkin Park and experience the history of the place coupled with its beauty. I have two questions; why is Celtic's ground now called Celtic Park? Why the change from Parkhead? Also, why is Celtic's name pronounced with a soft C? If I see that word in an historical or cultural context we use the hard C. but not for the football team. As a Sassenach, I've always been confused by that.

Sorry forgot to add that where Sheffield FC originally played which is now a B&Q car park off Queens Road in Sheffield was not a cricket ground in 1857. The likely location of the first ever match between 2 teams a couple of years later between Hillsborough barracks and Sheffield FC it’s also a B&Q car park off Penistone Road in Sheffield and again was also not a cricket ground. They were both deliberately created football pitches.

Unless they were very young children, those 'Aston Villa fans', cannot be given that moniker 'as fans of ours'. How van they not know who the great nan William Mcgregor was, shocking! After all he rightly has a statue outside Villa Park. When I took my boy to Villa Patk for the first time, I ensured he knew all about the great man, & his importance- & indeed Aston Villa's importance to the great game. Although as we live in Cornwall & my boy was Plymouth born, it is Plymouth Argyle that sees more of our money and support. However my boy plays rugby, was good enough to go all the way to the top if he wanted, I was told. I don't think he wanted to truly believe it :(. He's a joy to watch though :) & I'm super proud every time I watch him play, & why I'm not at football much these days.

WHEN COMMENTATING ON GAMES BETWEEN NON ENGLISH TEAMS OR COUNTRIES THEY CAN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT ENGLISH FOOTBALL. THIS USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN THE PLAYERS DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT, THEY SAY OH! @@bobbygillespie7687 I read your reply and again, I agree with you. I hear it happening all the time and can understand the frustration and annoyance to people north of the border. As far as the BBC are seemingly concerned, it's England first and then the other British nations second. Okay, England might have the greater land mass (probably) and certainly the greater populace but we are just one quarter of the British Isles yet receive more than our quota. Of course it isn't just pundits and commentators at the beeb it's also, as you say, other media outlets as well. I'm not sure they actually do it deliberately but more out of ignorance which is still no excuse. A few months ago I was in discussion (on youtube) with a person from from the U.S. about music and of all the many great artists and songs that have come out of both the U.S. and Britain as regards Rock and Pop. It was all very mutual but he did keep saying English when he meant British. He could not see that the two were different so I had to gently correct him on the issue. Among the list of 'English' artists he admired were Van Morrison and Tom Jones. I told him that neither were English but Irish and Welsh respectively. It took about three efforts but I believe he got it in the end and it was all done very amicably. I think we can forgive our cousins from across the pond but ignorance over here - no excuse. By the way, I saw your reply yesterday evening but couldn't respond then as I was in the process of getting ready to go to a concert here in my home town. Scotland’s contribution to the development of international football should not be overlooked however the other claims made in the video about Scotland’s contribution towards the development of association football are way off the mark I am afraid. A book could be written to unravel the Scottish spin however I think all that needs to be said is that the Edinburgh football club never played football as we know it nor was actually a proper club. Sheffield FC is recognised as the first proper and oldest football club in the world. It’s FIFA merit award also recognises its massive contribution to the development of the game we now call Association football. Less Scottish spin please and more facts about the origins of the game will be welcome in future.

Football was not invented in China. They had a sport or pastime where a 'ball' or some object was kicked around to each other, but it didn't resemble anything that could be called a football game. Just like any hand sized ball hit with a bat is not necessarily cricket. As for the football found in Stirling Castle - yes, it is indeed the oldest surviving football but we must place emphasis on the word 'surviving.'

I might have this wrong but I heard or read somewhere that one piece of clothing most associated with the Scots, the kilt, was originally worn by the English or, to be more specific, by 'Anglo-Saxon' tribes.

Because they want to learn about the origins of the modern game. Don't think we have anything like these old abandoned stadiums in England.

Yes and there were games like football that date back to before the time of Christ in many different cultures, they are discussing the origins of modern football and the game we play today. No one really knows who first invented the ancient game and many cultures claim to be responsible, but I think it all comes down to some kind of human nature to want to make sport of kicking a ball past a goal line of some sort, the rules set, approach, and score keeping will vary but it most be some hardwired thing since it seems almost every ancient culture has some kind of game like it.

@@arejaycee5484 Correct in England it was all about pass & rush as in kick & run after the ball more like Rugby Union now. In Scotland it's always been a working class game in England at first it was only played in Public Schools & Universitys where in Scotland it's was factory workers , mill workers & the likes that took up the game that's why the different styles developed in both Scotland & England The Scottish version in the end becoming the more popular over time. But the rules we use today are largely The Cambridge rules but not entirely.

@@davidrowan3853 That game is more like Rugby Union & they have a version in Gorgina as in the former Soviet state aswell that game in Gorgina is band now because there was far to many people dieing from playing it this is why Rugby Union is so popular in Gorgina now because of it's similarity to Lelo. I am a fan of both Football & Rugby Union. Keep Safe.
