"pocket dialing" and "butt dialing" have been around the vernacular lexicon since the epidemic of candy bar phones in the early-to-mid 2000's. (The Nokia 6000 series users were particularly prone to including their most-recently-dialed-contact into whatever _cotidiano_ conversation they are having with the checkout lady at the supermarket or as witness to their indecision as they stumble through their order at Starbucks... Ah, the good old days of, "Hello! ...hello? ...aw, hell... oh, you buttdialed me again." (It could be fantastically voyeuristic, depending on your friends and the situation... The female-specific "purse dialing" not really catching on as a thing, because with that all you could hear was lipstick pens clanking around in the bottom of a cavernous COACH™ handbag...) As a side note, the Spanish of "butt dialing" has been _buttdialeando_ ...which ranks right up there with _bipbipear_ as a funny cellphone-related word.

@thegoodlydragon7452
8 жыл бұрын
+Majoofi No, you just don't actually know what dictionaries are for. They don't exist as some sort of official body to legitimize certain words and not others. They exist merely to document words and describe their various usages.
@talmdge1
8 жыл бұрын
+Majoofi I agree with The Goodly Dragon. It's ridiculous to say Oxford Dictionary has lost all credibility just for recognizing that people use a certain word, because that's what dictionaries do.
@dancancelmo7144
8 жыл бұрын
+The Goodly Dragon I don't find issue with the fact that Oxford Dictionary recognized Lolz or other slang terms as words, because they are in fact words. I do think having their word of the year literally be a picture and not a word does decrease their credibility.

@markuspeg2691

Yes, they are old, the point it, many of them are now official and classed as actual words according to dictionaries. The American dictionaries were also slow to add trending modern words to their lists. despite words like noob / newbie being around way before Scrubs... many spellcheckers still class these words as spelt wrong, despite many of us understanding and accepting them as words.

Will you please do an episode explaining why the British name their houses instead of having street addresses? How can named houses be found on a map or when receiving directions? I mean, "He lives in Pickle Manor. It's on Duckling Road," means nothing in terms of telling one how to find the place, but it's the kind of directions we hear in British television shows all the time.
@Christiehannah

I'm sorry, I live in the US and I'm aware some houses in the UK have names but not all of us were lead to believe British homes didn't have actual street addresses because of what films/movies portray. (Not really a generalization of Americans to be proud of) I'm guessing 10 Downing Street (the prime minister's address) and Privet Drive (Harry Potter) doesn't ring a bell.
