i agree, it seems a bit cold of the captain to care more about the whale which they could just try to catch again than losing 5 of his men

The best version of this song I have heard even better than the famous one with Judy Collins and Ted Bickel which was excellent. I think a common fault of many of the great American folk singers of the 50's 60's and 70's is that their versions often lacked sufficient instrumentation-there is a hell of a banjo player on this song.

In notes that went with the first version of this song I heard, I have read that even in the time this song was written, most people knew that whales are air breathing mammals (not fish), they just liked to sing it that way.

@@TheDustysix It's an English traditional song dating back to a broadside ballad of 1725. Ireland was not renowned for its whaling industry.
