Alan, as I write this, my wife and I are in a hotel in St.Thomas awaiting a flight back to the mainland tomorrow. We and two other couples just wrapped up an 8 day trip out of Nanny Cay, that may have never happened without this channel. The information here helped us tremendously in preparation for this epic adventure. Whatever you decide, I hope you see this… We are heartbroken with you and thank you.

I am sorry for your loss, but there is a warning story to tell young skippers here. I have been a commercial fisherman for over 40 years & there absolutely no way I would tie my boat up to any mooring ball that I did not own with an onshore wind & leave the vessel. Also to tell my passengers that it is unsafe to take my tender to shore so could you all swim? If it was my vessel & one of those passengers had died going to the shore or back to the boat I would be sitting in court. I would also never be able to sleep again.

WH, You do not know me, and I have never posted on your channel before. However as someone who has followed your content for some time, I wanted to respond this this particular video. I want to tell you how much you have inspired me through your content, I have been watching for 2 or 3 yrs. now and have going back and tried to watch from the beginning. When you had the health scare, that really caught my attention, and watching you get into better shape really inspired me. As well , you have helped me understand that I can do some of the things you are doing also. I don’t know if I will ever be able to buy a new boat, but I am within about 2 yrs. of buying something I can take to the Bahamas and one day take to the virgin islands. I know that I would not ever realized that I could be doing this considering where I come from and where I started in life. You have motivated me to not be complacent and I think you for that. I am very sorry about the unfortunate circumstance that has befallen you. I have tried to put myself in your shoes (much smaller scale) and I would be as sick as you are. So again I wanted to say how sorry I am for you. I do hope that you do not lose your drive to continue with you adventure. It would not matter if you no longed made new content, but just being out there for you & your family, that is what matters.

I don’t see how you could have done differently other than staying in a more protective area of moorings given the sea conditions. It’s certainly something I will remember in my future sailing. Did you save the ball to see what happen if the chain broke or the rope end one of my clients had that happen but caught Viking in time but in his case the chain was worn out on the ball side and he held the ball owner responsible because you are supposed to have the balls check at certain dates they didn’t and had to pay for the hit the hull
@GeorgePsaros

The balls there are sized for under 10,000 lb boats in good conditions. They are private for that reason. They are not set up for 54,000 lbs boats in poor conditions. Even had the ball been sized for that large a boat it would not have been prudent to take an unprotected ball in a North swell. The ball owner is not at fault.

I feel your pain. Boats are not like humans of course, but they are not just "things" either, they are somewhere in between. Hence this feeling of great pain when something bad happens to them. I wish you the best, either way things can only get better from here. Oh and one last thing: even the best Captains can't control every single risk, it's just part of the equation we implicitly accept when we decide to venture out on the water. Don't blame yourself, everyone is safe and that's what really counts.

Alan, I was deeply saddened to see and hear about the accident with your boat. Your KZitem channel has been more than just entertainment; it has been a source of inspiration and guidance. As a fellow captain, owning a 34-year-old, 40-foot boat, I've always admired your skills and the way you handled your vessel. My dream, is to someday upgrade to an Aquila 44 foot boat. Your loss is truly felt in the boating community. The "wandering hillbilly" will be missed, but the spirit of adventure and determination you've shown us will always remain. Your journey has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and the love for the sea. Thank you, Alan, for all the inspiration and wisdom you've shared through your videos. I hope you find strength during this time and never give up on your passion. The sea awaits, and so do many more adventures. Best regards, Arnold

I was on a 50ft Beneteau about 20 years ago, moored off of Dominica, had 10 campers on board (was working for a sailing camp). Woke up at sunrise to take a leak, looked around, and there was no land anywhere. I ran up to the bow and the morning ball, with about 10 feet of line, was dangling off the bow. We were lucky, it had been an offshore breeze. I don’t remember how far we had drifted overnight, but I think it was about 6 nautical miles. Your story hit home for me, glad it turned out much better than it could have.

Your a gem! I've had an incident where the boat failed on our bareboat (5 minutes after leaving harbor). It broke my heart into pieces. Still fighting the charter. We are bareboating again this year after 5 YEARS! It takes time to heal and go through the process. Some wonderful people out there that helped us, and others that just suck.. We didn't know, during the most difficult time when the boat engine failed, my wife was pregnant with our first (we struggled with to get pregnant). Life works in mysterious ways, but i'm sure, a guy like you will find a way to continue to make life beautiful. May the winds be at your back and the sun on your face.

Been there, lived to tell about it. (The most important part.) The PTSD is real, even today. The "salvage army" is amazing, true heroes, and Simon is a blessing. You will be back boating again. It is now in your DNA. There is something most special about having "your own" boat; you know her, you know where you left your favorite visor, you know where to stash the instrument covers, you know exactly what "that beep" means, etc. Take a deep breath, count your blessings, and know that The Hillbilly will rise again. (sending you a big hug, 'cause you need one.)

First I’ll offer my condolences. Having this happen to your “baby” is quite traumatic. I feel deep sorrow for you. Sorry if this sounds overly critical but it’s how I see it. A vessel that size, moored to a ball has the potential to break loose at any time and effectively be underway again very quickly. The vessel should have been manned at all times with a crew member. That crew member should be trained to man the helm station. The surface conditions at the time looked as if stress on the ball was a real concern. When you have the money to buy a boat like this you really should consider having a Captain, especially if you intend to leave it for hours at anchor.

I'm so sorry, Alan. You are about 2 years ahead of my wife and me. We take delivery of our power cat in July and your channel has provided a lot of inspiration for us as we went through the shopping and purchasing process. Literally yesterday, my wife and I were talking about anchors and mooring balls and whether I would sleep much at night. I awoke at 1 am this morning, checked the Tube to see what was going on, and my heart broke for you. Thank you so much for continuing to document this process. I know it must be incredibly painful. The sight of those waves breaking over the cockpit.... I'm so thankful you didn't just end the channel. You continue to teach those who are behind you, this time with an important tale of what can wrong on an otherwise amazing day that I am still dreaming of. Regarding the future, a quick aside: I am also part of the homebuilt aircraft crowd. I once knew a guy who spent years of his life building an absolutely gorgeous, hotrod of an aircraft. It was a high-performance work of art that he built with his own hands. It WAS him in many ways, a direct reflection of his heart and mind. Then, an oil line let go and he was forced to land in a field. The aircraft tripped in the soft soil and was destroyed. He survived, but never really recovered from the heartbreak. Don't let that be you. This is just another chapter in an amazing story. Yes, this one is sad, but it doesn't have to be the last chapter. I have faith. Give yourself time to mourn the loss but never forget the joy you and your wife experienced and shared with so many others. You did this amazing thing. It comes with trials and heartache, but also sheer joy and awesomeness! You can do it again if you so choose. Watching your channel, the smiles on your face, this is you man. Thanks again for all that you have done for us via your channel. I look forward to buying you a drink on a beach someday.

Number 1 As a director you should know to do away with the awful music. It serves no purpose other than distracting from the spoken word. Number 2 Watch Sailing Dauntless. They've saved a catamaran sailboat that was damaged worse. It depends on how much sweat equity your willing to invest. Number 3 Did you dive on the anchor and check for damage, fatigue, or signs of weakness of the anchorball and attachment hardware? Did you set an anchor alarm? Did you monitor your anchor alarm system? Did you inquire about the age of the anchor ball? How often is it inspected for safety? There's a lot left to speculation and chance. Trusting your anchoring gear is usually best.

I'm very sorry for the accident, and glad ur friends helped so much in terrible situation. I also am so sorry that there was hull damage after we thought it was not too bad originally. Those guys at Spanish Town fixed many "totaled" boats in that yard since the hurricanes, but you know insurance may want to to write it off either way. As a fellow 54 owner with a very high stakes profession, ur story about handling the boat hits home as usual makes all the sense in the world. I hope like hell you don't sell yourself short, as I saw how good you were with ur boat and how much she meant to y'all. Please let me know we can help in any way.

I don't understand why people don't put out backup anchors when they're on moring balls? I know it can get complicated and get tangled up, but you'll know how long the morning ball is pretty quickly and we can set a very least. You can just throw an anchor with twice the length of the morning ball and connect it to the front with the boring ball. Then if it breaks at least something will drag on the ground

They have been all over the world - they had an instance like yours but they were in the boat when the mourning ball let go. Of course they were able to rectify the situation and the boat did not suffer any damage. After this incident if they used any balls they dove down to see if the balls were secured before they anchored.

Everything i see is repairable, of course its going to cost a few bucks but seems to me fiberglass work, new props and shafts, etc you can be back on the water. I wonder what mooring ball was holding on to at bottom

Oh no, what a disaster, very sad but glad to see no one suffered any serious injury a bump on the head not too bad considering what happened and i wouldn't say it was wrong to try and save it...what else are you mean't to do in that type of moment? If you didn't try to save it you would have always wondered if you could have if you tried but now you know. Don't die wondering is my motto and also what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. And Fk the cretins who are jealous and call you a rich hollywood no idea boater, you've obviously sacrificed a lot of your life to become well rewarded from your work and are most likely deserving of those rewards, i'm not a rich person, just a hard working butcher and my 7k bike is the best i can afford but love watching your videos, trips and adventures, not jealous one bit and truely saddened to see this happen to you and your family and friends and with some time to get over the short term elevated emotional issues and some insurance monies i'm sure you won't let it beat you and you'll be back on the water once again, all the best. :)

Wow, what a horrible experience. At least you're okay. You may have addressed this and I missed it, but I wonder if a drag alarm would have made a difference. Another KZitem channel called sailing Nandji had a mooring ball come loose on them and they ended up hard on the rocks. They said that they won't trust a mooring ball and won't use one again.

Alan, I know many have said what I'm about to say here but I feel I must say it. THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT! This is an accident. That's it. A "SHIT HAPPPENS" moment. Sometimes mooring balls fail. Its a metal chain in salt water and you had no way of knowing. I hope you come back from this with a repaired Hillbilly or a new one boat. Your content is both entertaining and educational. Last March for my 60th B-day I chartered a 62 foot catamaran in the BVI's and even my very hesitant wife loved. And it was out favorite vacation of all time, and trust me, I've had some amazing vacations. That trip would never have happened if I hadn't seen your videos. This tragic event at minimum may help others who follow your path the view of reality that is needed to show both the good and bad. Thank you for what you do and I hope you come back soon.

Alan, sorry for your loss. I don’t know squat about sailing, I live vicariously through great sailing channels. That said, I’ve seen some sailors get in the water to check the condition of the mooring ball (old rope, chain). Is it ever possible to be confident about a mooring balls integrity without getting in the water? What a pain. If you decide to fix your boat, get Colin at Parlay on speed dial. Good Luck

So sorry for this. I am a professional captain, I have never had it as my FT job, but I have been on and around boats my entire life. These things happen on a boat and they happen to the best of captains everywhere. I have countless stories I could share where we found ourselves in bad situations due to all kinds of unforeseen failures. So I am sympathetic to this happening. Thank you for sharing your content, your content helped guide us on our first BVI adventure in 2022 and we are going back in 2025, this time with 2-54’s and 8 couples, many of which agreed to join us based on the sharing of your content. Where ever and whatever you decide on from here, we wish you all the best and hope that our paths cross in BVI! We are all set for June of 2025 for our next trip! Wishing you calm seas and favorable winds ahead! 🥂🤙

Hey Alan .. I met you and your wife at Foxy's during this trip and we were neighbors at 2 different bays. So heartbreaking to see this happen along with the medical emergency that occurred. You will rise above from this and God Bless you, your family and friends. I will look forward to your victory and bouncing back better than ever before! You are a true Captain who has inspired many and thank you for sharing ❤

Alan so sorry to see this. I’m a big fan from Spain and something similar happened to us 3 years ago in Mallorca. It was really shocking but time let you go over everything. Good luck and keep your energy high. Hope to see you soon with the boat repaired (or a new one)

Alan. Captain Andy here. You did nothing wrong. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. I had a similar incident but got lucky. My boat floated into another boat with people aboard. They saved my boat and theirs. I’m forever grateful. You are not a quitter. Nobody got hurt. It’s heartbreaking I agree but get another one or get that one fixed! Take care buddy.

WOW! I'm so sorry about your beautiful boat being so badly damaged and possibly unrepairable 😢😢😢😢 Thankfully you're okay ❤ We feel for you!! We're really hoping to meet you floating around in the BVI on The Wandering Hillbilly someday. I can well imagine it's tough to think about replacing Her right now, but the most important thing is, you, your family, and friends are safe! Hopefully you'll continue to do more boating someday, someday, soon! ❤❤ from your viewers in Canada 🇨🇦

That sucks to see. I absolutely hate mooring balls for this reason. Never trust them in any Caribbean island, I've dived so many and half of them are always dodgy. You.got unlucky with the westerly swells recently. Hope the damage isn't so bad. I'm sire you'll get it sorted.

Heartbreaking. I know that feeling all too well. Nothing you could have done short of diving on every mooring ball you tie up to and even that may not have revealed the issue. I don’t trust mooring balls and would rather anchor with the tackle I know. Best of luck fixing her.

A broken mooring is a nightmare, especially if you're off the boat. I'm in the habit of diving the mooring to check the line and/or chains, but even then, you can't always tell. So I also set an anchor alarm with a very tight swing circle.

i was completely shocked to see this. you always boated wisely and took great pride in your boat, i feel so damn sorry for you. years ago we put our 45" cruiser yacht up on shoal here in Georgian Bay Ontario. ripped open the bottom, but my marina was able to patch and rebuild the hull and that boat is still going strong. i guess i am trying to say once you get past the emotions, wait it out and you might get her back. i wish you great luck and hope to see and watch you on the water again soon. one failure can lead to another great success.

Alan I'm sending prayers and blessings to you and your family. Alan you have been such an inspiration to a great number of folks, including me and my interests in the Aquila 44 as I am a neophyte to boating. It was an accident and no blame to be placed on you or the owner of the ball. Please keep posting your videos for us because they so genuinely informative. You did have to share your life but, I myself are so glad you have and so very grateful. As a retired Chicago homicide and SVU detective I have seen and been apart of some of the most horrific crimes.i saw you fist video and fell in love with the idea of living and cruising on aa Aquila so thank you from what's left of a broken soul. What ever direction you have to go God will be there blessing you and I will be there applauding you. I pray that she will be fine brother. God bless you.

This reminds me of every video I have seen of people surveying the damage after a tornado hits their home. The only thing you can do is be thankful it wasn't worse and nobody was hurt. It doesn't make anyone feel better hearing this at the time but it is the only way to go forward. It makes you wonder if mooring buoys should be all chain between the float the buoy anchor.
