Guthrie plays 20 notes in a second and you swear you heard every one clear as day. My god man, the clarity of his shredding is unmatched.

Unpopular opinion: I dig his playing but not his tone. The would-be clean is sterile and without character or clean single coil depth and the overdrive is kinda woollen with a samey twangy treble cut, and the timebased stuff is pretty generic in and of itself. They’re all middle of the road tones that can be done better individually within the style with dedicated gear. Part of the problem probably derives from the strings being so close to the fretboard to accommodate the style that it comes at a cost of tone. To me most of the tones themselves have been taken to more ultimate places by many others.

@@youtubebyungshin He does an admirable job, but he's not on the level of The Aristocrats musically - a decent jazz funk bass player, but with musicians like those guys technique is never in the way and they are tighter than a duck's bum; I felt like the bass player might've struggled to follow Guthrie where he wanted to go during improv parts. There's also a point where Guthrie looks over to the drummer, around 54 seconds, like they rehearsed something (the guitar rhythm is quite distinct there, maybe a hi-hat part that matched it..?) and he was looking to the drummer to see what's up/to give him a cue. To be clear, this is a great performance that I like to watch now and then because it's groovy, I just think the other musicians are not as tight as what Guthrie is used to (because they aren't familiar of course!) so some of the little details/nuances weren't there.

I know this is an old comment, but you've probably never heard of Shawn Lane or Jon Gomm either - I come across new ones all the time. It's a little bit scary just how many extraordinary guitar players there are/have been who for whatever reason never seem to make it to the big leagues. I went on one of Guthrie Govan's guitar masterclasses a couple of years ago (highly recommended if you can do one) and I think the guy is genuinely happy with what he does. He gets to do some performing/recording, some music journalism and teaching. He's just a guy who loves music and he's never pursued celebrity (though he could).

Well said my friend. I've seen youtube comments like "he's the best of all time" for at least 20 different guitarists. Some have extraordinary virtuosity, some are faster, some are slower, some are better composers, some are more unique and some are just pioneers in their own style etc (I can go on all day). Everyone of them are legends in their own way. There's no best guitarist ever and there never will be. We have to appreciate them individually.

Yeah I get that bro, and he's probably just psyched to be on stage with him, but the stuff he was given to play is just so elementary that I feel bad for the guy. He's obviously got chops or they wouldn't have put him on the stage with these guys.

He's just playing his part. He''s not up there doing nothing, his knowledge and ability to play rhythm to this is just testimony to how much his role is as easily as much of a brain fuck as Guntrie's role.

1:51 Guthrie has always said that the tapping arpeggio line there is hit or miss and extremely hard to play standing up. So I love coming back to this video because he nails it like the album here.

I can't help but to hate the bassist. I don't know much about bass so I don't know if he's supposed to be good or not but I found him obnoxious and his solo was quite trash imo. Maybe I'm wrong be he really threw me off

Really enjoyed the at 1:25 when hit that subtle string scratch. He looked at the crowd, like check this shit out. It's so subtle but incredibly genius. The man is in a class all by himself one it comes to this instrument.

he's a good bassist until it comes to soloing..its like he has no idea what key they're in, im not saying i could do better but its better not to play unless you're sure what you're doing is gonna fit in..other than that, he's great at playing on the beat

Once upon a time, I went to a music store in Austin to drop off my home-recorded entry for a guitar contest. I was confident. While in that shop (Ray Hennig's Heart of Texas Music) on that day, there were multiple staff in the amplifier area of the store who were huddling around a guitarist, the guts of an amp head exposed, sitting atop of the cabinet. They were trying out tube combinations for this guy, whose playing made me want to go and pull my cassette tape back out of the entry box and just go home... give up. Turned out that the guitarist in the store that day was Eric Johnson. He became my guitar hero, regardless of how discouraging that level of skill was to me as a teen. Short story, though... Guthrie is my latest guitar God discovery, and damn the press for not making him as available as their higher profile darlings. This guy and the other band members playing with him are top tier. Guthrie Govan!!!
