The best answer to every "Why is parent" question is because they always think that they're right and never wrong. That explains why a lot of kids get in trouble for "talking back" when in all actuality the parent can't suck up their pride and ego and just accept that they're wrong.

It's important to push people outside their comfort zone, that's how barriers are broken, dreams are realized, talents recognized, friends made, worlds changed. HOWEVER, I do side entirely with you. This is not a push out of a comfort zone. This is shitty parents trying to live vicariously through their daughter, projecting their own shortcomings or regrets on her. The look of disappointment when the mother rolls her eyes is absolute douchebaggery. I hope this girl a.) wants to play this instrument and wasn't forced into it and b.) doesn't let anyone, especially not her parents or people she loves, shut her down or turn her off to her own dreams. It's the people we love that break us down the hardest. She needs a gentle nudge when appropriate, not a forceful shove into her dickhead parents' trophy case. My wife went through the same thing. Now she has cPTSD and motivational issues, and this video reminded me of what her parents were like the first time I met them. Needless to say, I gather she's happier without them breathing down her neck anymore, and I am sure this girl will be too. I hope her parents realize before they drive their child away.

Agreed. Embarrassing your child is bullying & a form of abuse. It's disgusting & unacceptable. The same thing goes with any activity- music, sports & even career choices. Parents have the chance to play an instrument, perform in a theater group, play sports or become a rocket scientist. If their children are not interested or don't feel safe performing, embarrassing them isn't going to change their minds. It WILL make them dislike the activity & grow to resent their bullying parents. Just say no....if necessary, in front of those they're trying to impress & tell them they are upsetting & embarrassing you. Hopefully that should end their abusive behavior. If I were playing piano & parents did this, I would call them out publicly & say THEY ARE making everyone uncomfortable which isn't what playing music is meant to be.

i’m re-posting my original reply, but AGREED 1000% 😤😤 i stopped wanting to play the violin (15 years of formal lessons), piano (6), and flute (6) in public or even in front of family because of being pressured like this by my parents when i was deeply uncomfortable and insecure. damn at least the joy of music brought a smile to this girls face at the very end, but this was actually really hard to watch 😓😔😔 i despise this mom and her behavior displaying blatant narcissism at the expense of her daughters comfort - this mother should be ashamed for acting this way and whipping out the cameras for her fucktard facebook friends, while her daughter is clearly communicating to her “no; i don’t want to; i’m uncomfortable and nervous” shame on this mom, and i hope the little girl is still able to hold on to her love of music/performing at her own pace, where she’s comfortable and happy 🥺🩷💛🩵🤘🏽

I have been playing piano and I've been singing ever since I was four and at every single party or gathering we went to I was forced to perform. As I grew older I began to realise how uncomfortable i felt while doing it but I was told that it's a "phase" when everyone's confidence goes down and it's normal that I'm feeling this way. They said that they felt happy and proud when I performed but I feel like my perspective counts too right? So ever since then I promised myself I'm never gonna do this with my kids and I'll only do it if they really want to perform themselves.

You guys are very polite and comforting. The problem is the PARENT; she should NOT force the child for something that she does not feel ready for. If she hates the piano for the rest of her life, the parent IS the reason. I am an educator and speaking from the experience.

You COULD'NT be more correct. After years of opera training I still had anxiety & disdain for public performance for this very reason. I was too young to understand how to disconnect the feeling of anxiety & dread from it once I got into my 20s and let it go. I'd been offered a scholarship to the Peabody Institute & threw it away. Talk about regret & confusion 30 years later. As an educator please talk to these parents when you see them! You probably do, but it's pretty wild how we wire ourselves when we don't have the foresight yet to put things into perspective.
