My job let's you call in sick but unless you actually are injured and can't go back to work they won't excuse your sick day. You're allowed 3 occurrences without any effect (you can take 2fers so you can be out 2 consecutive days each call out). On your 4th you get a verbal, your 5th a written, your 6th a final, and your 7th is you getting fired. You call outs fall off in 6 months. Even still I have been pretty healthy for pretty much the last year. Also call outs won't affect you till you get a verbal, but attendance is factor for promotions and department transfers as well as which shift you get (I work at a casino).

I can relate to this so well. This is an actual issue that should really be addressed. They can't punish you for being sick unless they want you to infect other people at work, yet they also try to force you to go home when you put up with being sick and come to work.

But sick days still apply. If you have covid they don't. But many places if you stay home sick and you don't have Covid, then you have to use sick days. Eventually you could run out of sick days and not be willing to take the chance
@Mugruncher
2 жыл бұрын
Yep. It’s so fucked up but at least COVID-19 has given workers a “genuine reason” to take a sick day if they’re sick. And even so, you have to fight tooth and nail. It’s not that they will ORDER you to work, but they will use emotional abuse to punish you for trying. Even if you’re streaming snot right in front of them. They’ll ask “well, do you FEEL Like you COULD work?” In an angry judgemental tone that makes it clear they will be unhappy with you as a worker if you don’t push through and pretend not to be sick. If you continue to request a sick day, they will imply with tone and body language (and sometimes with direct words) that you are soft, and weak, and selfish. If you point out that it’s not just about whether you are up to it, but the risk of spreading infection to others, they will roll their eyes, scoff, and use tone and body language to imply that you are being difficult, splitting hairs, or just saying ridiculous far fetched things. Bosses often don’t care about society at large or the individual worker. They care about themselves.

Yes. The employee who comes in that sick is bad, but equally bad is the employee who screws everyone over by calling out or leaving early because of the dumbest things. I had a manager who was notorious for coming up with stupid reasons to not come to work, including: -He forgot (to go to work) -He missed the bus (didn't explain why he couldn't just get on a later bus) -He needed to do laundry because he had nothing to wear to work that day (which begged the question, what did he wear to the laundromat?) -His legs were too sore from his workout the day before so he couldn't ride his bike to get to work today -He was hungover -Earwax... yep, he legit called in once "because of earwax". *in the US. (sorry for necroposting) Most other developed countries have laws protecting workers. I can't wrap my head around how the US has not had several worker revolts by now. In Germany, we have basically unlimited sick days. You're not feeling well? Go see a doctor, and he'll write you an incapacity certificate, and expand it when necessary. Most bosses and workers alike are well aware that you can't work when you're sick (be it physically or mentally) and even encourage you to go home. You get paid either way (your employer gets reimbursed by your health insurance company - having one is mandatory), even if it takes several weeks or even months. It boggles my mind that the US lags behind in such basic concepts, and that about half the population even opposes any reform.

This was a huge difference between places I have worked. The places with no paid sick days, People were sick there all the time. i was sick all the time. I worked 2 places with paid sick days. One paid out sick days at the end of the year if you didn't use them(so people never called in sick, the same as not being paid). The other, paid sick days. no rollovers. No payouts. However, there was a trend of making sure you use them before you lose them. As well as just using a "sick" day when you knew it was going to be busy. Or you just didn't want to work. As much as that fucked everybody else over, I like it better than non-paid sick days. paid sick days saw people calling in "sick" on the worst days, sure. But it was still a lot better than getting sick myself and living through torture for a week or two.

Adding to GoldeyX. I used to work in fast food, and despite having paid sick days, managers always had the 'guilty until proven innocent' approach, so people always came in while sick so that managers would send them home. Unfortunately some managers still ignored the obvious and made them work through it

That's stupid. Then when you are sick you have to have it off anyhow and it's either unpaid or it eats into annual leave. -_- But we should get more sick days... At least during flu season. And women should get one per month. Nothing worse than having to use sick leave for that. But hey, I would rather take the day off than sit there in pain, and depending how bad, running to the bathroom. -_- I'm sick during the first couple of days so I'm using sick leave. And that's why it would be equity not equality... Women need more sick days. But then again just give everyone more and it will solve everything
