@@-._lunamidnight_.- Complex characters don’t need to be Morally Grey, just have flaws and make mistakes. That’s every single well written Protagonist, but people can be very much blind to depth, and the only way they can see it is if it’s right up in their face. @@Jon-Rimmer Well, I'd say that a complex character has to have more than flaws and mistakes. But my main problem with the morally grey characters is the writer not committing to the 'morally grey' bit. It starts with "this character did some morally questionable actions" and goes to "this character is actually the good guy and did nothing wrong" and the narrative bends over backwards to justify their actions. I had thought you were talking about morally grey characters in general, but it seems to me that you're talking about characters that were already known as morally good (like superman) and were given a twist, subverted. But again, I don't think you'll find many people disagreeing with your take. And the people who like edgy characters aren't there for the subversion, just the edginess. Austria-Hungary was fairly benevolent when it came to religious and ethnic minorities, including Jews. The Habsburgs in particular were considered to be strongly philosemitic (in stark contrast to the Romanovs or the Hohenzollerns). Apparently, the WW1-era Austro-Hungarian armies had a much higher percentage of Jews serving in their officer's corps than any other major country, including the UK.

Fun fact: It is possible that Don Quixote was inspired by a Habsburg monarch: Charles I of Spain, who was also Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire. Miguel de Cervantes supposedly based the main character in Charles I/V, who was too obsessed with medieval values that were dying in the Early Modern Period, like chivalry trial combat and the obsolete idea of a "Christian Universal Monarchy".

@fds7476 names ending in -ski are usually associated with slavic people, and slavic people were not treated equally in Austra-Hungary, the last true stronghold of the habsburgs. @@ic5889 I gotta disagree. The Habsburgs weren't perfect in that regard, but they were nothing short of _trailblazers_ compared to the other European powers in terms of making their empire a multi-ethnic community. They went to great lengths to foster, emancipate and encourage various ethnic identities and languages, especially the various Slavic groups in their empire. The imperial anthem had 14 official versions, including Czech, Croatian, Serbian, Polish, Ruthenian, and Slovenian. Just a few months ago, Vladimir Putin was on TV complaining to Tucker Carlson that the Austrians were 'to blame' for making the Ruthenians believe that they were an independent people (rather than a Russian sideshow).
