That’s for the analysis. Just watched the movie. Such a beautiful production. One thing you didn’t touch on was the old director that stands up and starts yelling during the play making the young actress cry. Just a thought but could he symbolize the old Fabietto looking back on his life?

My pleasure! I'm glad you liked the movie!! And that director is actually Antonio Capuano. Like the Maradona character, this director character is a real person who played a huge part in Sorrentino's life. I think he was like a mentor to Sorrentino, and they ended up collaborating on films. I hope this helps!

As usual your analysis is fantastically nuanced, thought provoking, and captures the essence of how powerful cinema can be for storytelling and in our lives. Sorrentino really hit it out if the park with this one. Oftentimes autobiographical films are blinded by self serving inner thoughts and intentions. Yet here Sorrentino soars, seamlessly connecting the most vulnerable aspects of his inner world and memories with universal emotion and pain. Bravo Sorrentino and to Lucas for delivering a beautiful critical synopsis of a master work!

Just found your channel and I enjoy seeing other people have the same enthusiasm for a sorrentino's work that I've had since I first stumbled across his film " Il Divo" way back in 2010. I have purposely delayed viewing "hand of God" just yet but we'll definitely be sitting down to watch it shortly. And then your video Shortly after that. I've just been browsing the comments thus far to avoid the spoilers in the video. But I highly recommend considering doing videos on basically any thing he's made up to this point. Of course "the great beauty", "Youth", "Il Divo", or the television miniseries he made "The Young Pope". For a KZitemr there's so much to unpack in each of his films that it seems like it would be a content Gold mine.

First of all I want to compliment you for the detailed and powerful explaination! Then I want to share with you a personal feeling about Fabietto' sister. As you said, we never see her throughout the movie, she spends the whole time in the toilet, except for the ending scene, when she finally gets out of there. I believe she stands for Fabietto's most emotional and weak side of his personality. Fabietto is shy, introverted and vulnerable, incapable of conveying his emotions, opening up to others, confronting his fears and putting himself out there. Her sister is a kind of alter ego, the toilet she locks herself into represents the fears which hold Fabietto back, but when fabietto finally plucks up the courage to face his fears and pursue what makes him happy, Fabietto's sister gets out of the toilet. What do you think?

Good commentary. One scene you didn't mention which really stood out to me was when Patrizia throws a battery down to Fabio....it came to my mind she was giving him back his voice. Great analysis! I was just surprised you didn't include much about the talk with Capuano? To me, it's quite puzzling that Fabietto openly contradicted his advice to stay in Naples, although I understand his decision to move to Rome as a inevitable part of self-development. Do you think there is more to it?
@lucasblue20
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Yeah, I felt like the video might be getting too long so I didn't include that part. But I'm glad you've highlighted it because Capuano's points were very fascinating to hear and he was a super colorful character. I think what he said had a lot to do with shaping Sorrentino's career. There are some things it looks like he took and some things he felt wasn't for him (including the move to Rome like you've said). I think that's pretty much it. I think it was essentially an homage to Capuano's influence and guidance on him as a director

@@lucasblue20 right! I haven’t seen CMBYN (I really need to, it looks great!) but from what I’ve seen in the trailer and certain clips of that movie, I can totally see the directional similarities. Plus, I think the director said that some people may be reminded of Timothée Chalamet when they see the lead (Filippo Scotti) which is what I felt haha but yeah I think the cigarette guy was a first true friend for Fabietto. Also, I think that movie is told largely in flashbacks which parallels how this movie is one big flashback. His parents flirting either. And when the protagonist met at the end of the movie the crisis guy he told him just people chasing the joy and sex and they're so awful and so on and the meaning of the ending is he will chase his dream to be a director away from his country.

One thing I couldn't find an explanation for: on the scene his sister is coming out of the toilette, the supporters' song is: -In Spanish instead of Italian and singing about Argentina having "a Messi y Maradona" which makes it obvious that the song is not from the 80's 'cause Messi hadn't been born yet... What's the interpretation for this? Could it be a director's mistake? Thoughts anyone? Again, excellent video Lucas.

I found interesting the contrast of Julia and Fabietto in regards to Capuano. Julia has put a large amount of effort into impressing Capuano through conventional means. Ultimately it is no more than an empty, artificial and “self-referential” theater show. Fabietto has only seen 3 or 4 films and has zero knowledge of the arts, but the pain and emotion he conveys is genuine. This moves Capuano.
@LordKensis

Your explanation is good but you missed a very key point ( but was very hard to understand unless you have already seen lot of moovie from Sorrentino ) One of the most important scene is the one with the old director that try to push Sorrentino/Fabietto to speak about his feeling in his creativity process, He says pretty much that Naples ( metaphorically speaking ) is enought to make a moovie, but Fabietto/Sorrentino disagree, he erupt all his frustration at the end of the scene but still goes to Rome at the end of the moovie. Naples vs Rome ( and the rest of the world ) is a symbolic conflict between passion and mind, emotion and cinism. All the others Sorrentino moovies are very impersonal, his POV as a director is always very distant from the emotion, and usually is the main charachter that always teach everything to the other characters in the moovie. Late Sorrentino had an evolution and he went for more personal moovie, is is by far the most personal and is not casual that he went back to Naples to tell this story. The final scene in the moovie is a good ending because Fabietto see a good omen that means that he is going in the right direction, but at the same time is an admission from the director that he was wrong, there were no need to go to Rome, the old director war right, Naples ( feelings ) are enought to tell a story.

But looking back at it with the perspective of an adult telling his childhood story (which is a perspective that never crossed my mind while watching) makes it a lot better. Thank you for getting me on the right track to enjoy this movie at last

When they asked Marradona if he punched the ball in,he said it was the “hand of god”.Meaning I think that god wanted Argentina to win but the bitter English interpreted it as him saying he was god.

Great movie, however the surrealism confused me sonetimes Did you understand - Why they have a sister for three scenes and she is always in the bath (maybe just a gag but it confused me that he never talked to her when the film got more serious) Why have they focused that failing actress so much What did his hot aunt gave him at the end?
@UnLugubreEquivoco

Regarding the third point: she throws him a battery. In the beginning of the movie, she takes away the battery from the old man and, in a way, she takes away his tool to speak out loud. In the end she throws a similar one to Fabietto. I see it as a metaphor of her being his muse, giving him a "voice". Regarding the sister, I think that her final scene explains how she'd be always in the bathroom to be alone and cry. But also, maybe, he chose to portray her this way because, in real life, the director's sister didn't live with them anymore when their parents died. Eventually she came back to live with him and the other brother to help them during their time of grief. But he probably found this way to keep her in the movie without inventing too much about her (the story in itself is true: his parents died from intoxication in Roccaraso while he was in Naples to watch Maradona play)

@@UnLugubreEquivoco thank you, interesting! If you know his back story, do you also know if the desire for his own aunt is also based on the real biography? :D

@@felxta I've only red an interview some time ago where he said that his parents died in Roccaraso for the intoxication (like they do in the movie) but that he managed to stay home despite him being only sixteen because Maradona was playing and he was a big fan (again, like in the movie). He briefly spoke about his sister coming back home to help him and the other brother, but that's it. I don't know if it has been translated in English, but that's all I can remember :)

at the end of the movie when the director/producer told him that he must say something, must tell a story in order to make a film, and fabietto could not succeed to do so, i told my friend, he must be the one who made this film, because until now i could not get to know what story he want to tell us or what is the point of the movie, where does he want to reach? i kept watching to reach to the story of the movie but there was no story, it was like a watching camera that captures the everyday life of the people. But that's what i appreciate about him, telling the truth , he is still struggling in showing his emotions or explaining them, i usually tear or cry from the sad Scene except in this movie, though it pissed me that his parents died. However, he did become a philosopher and answered his mother´s question of what could come out of philosophy. All in all, i did not enjoy watching this movie and there was nothing significant in his story-film, nothing that touches the heart and can cause an influence or whatsoever.. it is a waste of 2 hours of our time. i do not recommend it.

One thing I’m still kind of confused about is his sister being in the bathroom for the entire movie? I feel like that didn’t get talked about enough and maybe I’m naïve for not understanding it but I really don’t

What a great analysis! Extremely impressed. One little thing I would add is that “the hand of God” could have a double meaning. When Sorrentin’s parents died he should have been with them, instead he went to see a football match in which Maradona was playing. Therefore some would say that thanks to Maradona, Paolo is still alive. The hand of God could be interpreted as God or Maradona himself.
