There’s an error at 12:00. I mistakenly said that O’Connor was appointed to SCOTUS in 1991 rather than 1981. Feeling sheepish, especially when the picture has Reagan right there. Thanks John Hedin for spotting it.

Wow, who would have known that an Australian man would have so much knowledge about Feminism in the U.S. I was searching for the Handmaid's Tale movie trailer, because I just finished the book and came across this. I only wish there was a more detailed discussion about the novel itself. I think it magnifies women's issues that are still present almost 20 years after the book was written. Also, the story sends a clear warning of how easy it would be to lose the progress that we have made through the Feminist movements in the last 100 or so years overnight, like what happened in Iran. Thanks for posting!

Hi, don't worry if you get this message in week, but is there a specific name for what happened in Iran?

My understanding is that in the 1960s and 70s, women's rights in Iran were very progressive. But people weren't happy with their government and there were movements for change/more freedom (much like the movements occurring all around the world and in the U.S.). However, it went in a different direction in Iran. After the Iranian Revolution (which women participated in), a religious extremist government took over and required by law that women cover themselves in public, and they repealed other laws protecting women such as right to divorce, and the 18 yr age limit for marriage, etc. It was a very sudden change for women (and people in general) in Iran. I suggest watching the movie Persepolis and/or reading the book Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi. These are Iranian women's stories.

Your definition of socialism at the beginning of the video isn't quite accurate. Socialism- A political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

Agreed. His definition is very skewed and not at all accurate.

His definition is more close to Marxist analysis of class struggle, which is an essential aspect of Socialism but not the main definition of the system.

Thanks for the video, doing an exam on the novel and Frankenstein. I couldn't help but laugh at prospects Clinton presidency from the hindsight of 2017, the whole thing went left and now it's far right.
