Like this movie making people believe that certain bible verses exist when they actually don't. The verse Deuteronomy 25 does not exist anything like what is quoted in this movie. But people who watch this movie will think that's what the Bible says and that's what Christians and Jews (since it's in the Old Testament) think.

They did it to Justice Kavanaugh. They’ve even been doing it to women who don’t vote democrat, belittling them by saying, “they aren’t voting in their own interest”. Another example: antifa saying they aren’t fascist. This stuff doesn’t happen in America, but it does happen under sharia law & some of it happens under democrat/progressive policies. When you allow your government to have power over you instead of understanding that your government only has the power you allow it to have, you then become dependent upon it & it’s dominant ego grows. Tyranny can not only be established through one leader, but also through a majority or a minority. If you want freedom of choice over yourself, you cannot ask government to get involved. Government is of, by, & for the people; so, when government is involved, we all have a say in the issue you originally wanted freedom of choice to decide for yourself.

Even though I’d say this movie overall pales in comparison to the book and the series, there are some fantastic scenes throughout, and I think it’s pretty decent overall, if a bit rushed. This scene is a prime example. I mostly think the series is better than the movie, EXCEPT for this ONE scene. This truly captures the rage that the handmaids' must feel daily. In a culture where the baby is everything, yes, you would have to have men w/ riot gear to hold back the others. It means your brainwashing is taking effect properly. In the series, the women are way too damn calm. As a handmaid, the sexual assault wouldn't likely mean much, but being told the baby died because of it would cause a total killing frenzy.
@agirlwithdreams15
5 жыл бұрын
Angela Kirby I think they did this because of the times. in the 1980's, the politics were VERY much conservative. MANY people were republican and christian. Regan won by a landslide in both elections. Now, in 2018, we do have a growing number of republicans and white nationalists, but Trump didn't win by a landslide. Ergo it makes sense Gilead is world even worse off for a woman in 2018 while a little less "worse" in 1987. Of course, Gilead is always bad, but you get my point. But in the series, when Lydia says "the baby died" the handmaids also freaked out more. It's not just an "omg im indoctrinated to believe babies are the most important thing as a woman" its also "omg i know how hard it is to get pregnant by a sterile commander and to be raped AGAIN and have your one chance to live be taken away from you? id kill"

I totally agree, (yes the comment is old, but I felt a need to point this out)because in the series, only the handmaids kill him. In this series, EVERYONE wants to. Hearing this sends everyone into rage, but only the handmaids are allowed to seek vengeance. I think it's important because we can see that everyone is brainwashed yo some point. The wives are completely submissive, the Martha's seem to do as their told, but the handmaids still have some sort of thought left (when their "sister" handmaid was killed, they had varying reactions). But everyone is brainwashed to an extent

@@agirlwithdreams15 This was filmed in 1989--I was an extra in this scene. We were into the Bush 41 era by then and Hollywood definitely was not run by the Religious Right. The 'zeitgeist' is not why it was filmed the way it was; this is how it's portrayed in Atwood's book (written in 1985). Yes, when someone's entire raison d'etre is to make babies, then learning of one whose baby was killed by the actions of the mother (at least as far as they knew--of course the story was made up and the Handmaid being hanged was for political reasons), it would set off such a frenzy with all the women there.

Actually I think they’re both scary but in different ways. I really like how both had completely different , but effective spins on the character. Ann was more traditionally scary and brought this sense that her life and background had led her to this brutal path. A lot of emotion involved in making her who she was.- Victoria on the other hand being this brainwashed almost shell of a person. Attractive and unthreatening looking but completely devoid of anything resembling genuine human emotion. Ann’s cones with a sense of who she once was where Victoria’s comes with a sense of whoever she was died a long time ago and all we’re left with is a mindless cult soldier.

Gotta agree. The novel was way better. SPOILERS FOR NOVEL FOR THE PURPOSE OF ELABORATING THE DIFFERENCES --- So much of the story really is about existing in a totalitarian state like that. For instance, in this scene, a big part of it is how Offred feels as though she wanted to join in too because much of the book involves people being bent into the roles they were forced into. It's this pressing of people into roles against their morality and character that is truly tragic. These scenes when characters gave into their new roles and lost themselves were the most disturbing scenes. Also, Ofglen's response isn't delivered in the defiant tone here but rather in a sense out of defeated pity. The death of the rebel is really more tragically hopeless and it's shown in her comments and actions (she's the one who first hits him by kicking him in the head to render his him unconscious for his mutilation).

It's the movie made from the book The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. It's a dystopian novel about a not-too-distant future when the U.S. is being run by a theocracy on (their interpretation of) strict adherence to the Bible. Blacks have been herded off to corners of the country nobody else wants; all Jews have been deported; women of dubious background (divorced, lesbian, etc.) who are still fertile are handed from one high official to another to bear children for them.

I don't think I'll ever watch the movie. I've seen two clips and just damn. They're so incredibly wrong! If I'm not mistaken, Playboy is the one that made the movie, so obviously they were trying to make it sexier than it should have been. The Wives and Daughters had veils, the Handmaids had these weird white headdresses that made it hard to see their faces. There were like six people hung at the Salvaging and they didn't have the audience pull the freaking rope. How silly is all of this? Ugh.
@buddhabunnee

+SquiddleLover Hmm, I just read the book; I could be wrong but I thought they did have the Handmaids pull the rope. Offred describes the feeling of rope in her hand during that scene in the book. She says she concentrates on the feeling of the rope because she can't handle what is happening.
@arianebolt1575

They really did screw up the outfits. All women are supposed to be veiled, except the Aunts, who wear wimples (and certainly not pearls, what were they thinking?). I realize that veiling the main character makes it hard to follow what she's doing, but she's supposed to be one of the crowd. The rope thing was supposed to be a symbolic touch, not an actual act. And they had them "salvage" two Handmaids and a Wife. We are intentionally left in the dark as to why.
