How nice to end the video with the one and true national anthem of Wales. And yes indeed, RIP JPR Williams - truly a surgeon general on the rugby field.

There was a fad in the school playground at the time to mimic the 'lean on british pork' ad. Kids would stand on a step and 'lean' over like in the ad and see who lean the furthest without falling over and the school banned the game. ... guessing that might have been a my school thing tho ;p

What Wales got with S4C in the early years before going all digital was basically a local output of Channel 4 with some Welsh language programming. S4C in that time is an interesting look at what a completely local "ITV2" as proposed before Channel 4 could have looked like.

My dad is Irish, so would be exposed to S4C for many a summer holiday in Ireland. I remember being confused/annoyed it was not only ahead of channel 4 for Lost in Space (already on the colour episodes) but they had GI Joe cartoon, albeit in Welsh. That's how I remember it.

It is forgotten that a lot of Channel 4 shows would have simulcast by S4C from the time they started, and The Wonder Years would have been one of those. For instance, it would have been hard for a show like Drop The Dead Donkey to be first broadcast at a later date or time on S4C due to the contemporary comedy of the show. It is kind of forgotten that many shows comissioned by Channel 4 from 1982 to the Analogue Switch Off in 2010 would have to be shown on S4C to reach the whole of the UK, until the moment when cable, satellite and digitial TV allowed Channel 4 to reach of the whole of the UK.

Nid yw'r hysbysebion ar S4C fel arfer yn y Gymraeg, yn anffodus. Hyd yn oed yn y presennol, yn y flwyddyn 2024, lle mae llawer fwy o siaradwyr Cymraeg nac oedd yna yn 1991! The adverts on S4C aren't usually in Welsh, unfortunately. Even now, in the year 2024, when there's loads more Welsh speakers than there was in 1991!
