Writing is hands down one of the most aggravating things in the world but it's also the most rewarding. I'm getting close to the beta reader part of the process and I'm petrified lol. Good luck with your project. I look forward to seeing these videos every time you upload them.

Don't be!! The beta reader stage is soooo helpful!! Once you get some feedback, even if it's negative, you'll feel great about it and have the motivation to make your book the best it can be.

I have been wanting to write a novel for years. I finally sat down and wrote out my first draft in 6 months. It was 100,000+. I went back to fix a few things and ended up removing over 60,000 words and writing a hole different middle and ending. I definitely think I need to revisit it later, but right now I'm trying to switch to a different novel and it's hard because I keep going back to "How do I make the first novel better." It has been over 8 years in the making and took me a whole year to finish the second draft. It just seems like the whole process just keeps getting harder. I cant wait to have 3 Novels done at least. My goal is to at least get 5 done in my life (not including sequels/prequels) but for now 3 is a good start.

Whoa! I'm like basically at the same-ish spot as you (3 books written, I'm tightening everything in this new novel frantically now that I've sent out queries, but perfectionistically procrastinating sending my full manuscript out which is being asked for but all I see is inconsistencies and errors). I must say I am simultaneously relieved and horrified at how you nailed the like biggest frustrations in writing. Same, Andrea, same. It's like so stressful that it's exciting. Lol-

Hey! Don't say you're first book is terrible!! That means mine is probably terrible too 😂 I've been working on my book for over a year. I'm finally at the stage now where I just have to clean it up. No more beta readers or critiques. Just making sure theirs no mistakes and everything reads smoothly. THEN I get to look for an agent haha Can't wait to read yours 😀 I better be one of your first beta readers!! 😛

Andrea Heckler Don't get me wrong, my first draft was atrocious. But I've re-written so many times now I feel like its good enough to be published. After I look through it once more, of course 😋

I can’t believe you’ve written three novels - that’s amazing! I’m working on my first one right now. I’ve started actually writing it but I also had to go back and do some revisions and changes to the plot because some things weren’t quite right. And I know they’ll still be more things that will end up changing! haha. It’s super hard but I really am hoping I finish it!! I definitely relate to the struggles you mentioned haha. I hope i get to read something you’ve written one day! Have you ever talked about what your novels are about/would you ever? x

I'm a computer engineer. While watching your video, I remind when I came back to a program I wrote years before to manage a thousands book private library. Oh my, it was awfull ! How could I face myself after writing so bad computer code ? And sell it ! So I perfectly understand what you said about your first book.

I've been writing a big software project, and a lot of what you've said applies. I've been working on it for over ten years. There isn't any ex-boyfriend's eye color, but there are details like why SMOOTH5LIMIT is 660 that are just as easy to forget.

Have you thought of pulling all these videos together because they are an excellent manual for writers. And don't take this the wrong way, but the fact that you are still unpublished gives them true authenticity. As for the solitariness of writing, this is true but writers' groups can be an excellent way to support each other and give honest, but constructive and knowledgeable feedback. May be difficult for you as an expat in Paris but elsewhere people would find groups.

Hi Andrea, I don't know if you're going to read this but I'm writing my first Novel at age 37 (I've been writing stories 1998 when I was 14 years old but never finished anything). I really love to write and so far I'm at Chapter 28 with almost 41 thousand words done, my goal is 90 thousand words. Sometimes I feel unmotivated because here in my Country I have to pay a lot of money to Publish my stories. Is it normal to think that my stories aren't good enough? Oh and by the way, I don't want to show what I'm writing because I have a feeling that people will laugh at me. Maybe it's just me. Take care.

How old were you when you wrote your 1st book? and are you an outliner or do you write by the seat of your pants?
@AndreaHeckler

It wrote my first book through my teen years, around ages 13-17. That one I wrote with very little outlining, but since then I've become a much stricter advocate for outlining! My current novel had a fully detailed plot and scene outline before I started the actual writing, and I found it super helpful :)

It can be crazy complicated, but I've found that creating a detailed outline before getting started on the actual writing has helped me a lot :)
