Ward, you have my deepest sympathy. I can honestly empathize with you and know that huge empty spot. I lost my Dad a month ago and my Mom 30 years ago. My parents were a generation older. Both were WWII Veterans in the U.S. Army Air Corp. My mother was discharged after the end of the war. My dad retired from the US Army in 1965. Your description of your mother's role raising your family while your dad was assigned far away was very familiar. There was none of that "just wait 'til your dad gets home!" A military wife takes care of business right away and leaves no doubt who's boss around here. Thanks for your truly personal message. It hits very close to home.

No dry eyes here. What a wonderful tribute to your mother. Just weeks ago we laid my Army wife mother to rest at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery with my father. They moved 37 times in 36 years active duty and 10 as a contractor. And my Dad always reminded us service brats that Mom always outranked him by one promotion. Service wives are the backbone of our military strength and it sounds like your Mom was exemplary. Condolences to you, your family and all of Nancy’s friends.

What a powerful and beautiful statement! Thank you for sharing. Military life is hard on families. My great-nephew is a carrier Petty Officer in the Navy. He is a Gunners Mate with a specialty in missiles. He is currently stationed at San Diego. I was a YN2 on an LST, and we were deployed to Viet Nam in 1968. We carried cargo from Da Nang to various bases and had one mission to Chu Lai. Your long career was far more illustrious than my short active duty assignment. I did what I was ordered to do. I have no regrets about serving in the Navy and participating in an unpopular war. I left active service to get a teaching credential in California and taught for 40 years. Thank you Ward.

Ward, I just went through almost identical circumstances with my mother, a fall and injury to her brain that ended the same. It’s only been 6 months for me and hard to deal with because we had plans with her to travel this Summer. I still catch myself about to call or send her a text message so it just hasn’t fully processed yet. Both my wife & daughter were incredibly close to my Mom and became that way from the many deployments with my time in the U.S. Army that would yank me out of the family in the middle of the night or during holidays… Yes it does get a little easier with time but this is your mother and it really takes a chunk of what you worked so hard to become in life. It’s exactly what you said, “They are our Biggest Fan” and when that goes silent it’s incredibly empty. With the lose of my own mother so suddenly it’s injected me with a new drive to enjoy life sooner and to a higher degree and not wait around till I’m at an age I thought was appropriate. Take care and try to fill the gap with all the great memories of your Mom…

What a wonderful tribute, Ward! You have been gracious enough to share with us the talents, intellect, energy, love and sheer guts of this remarkable woman who lovingly devoted her entire adult life to your dad, you and your siblings and to the challenges of being the wife of a career Marine who had chosen a highly dangerous way to serve his country, flying a ground attack plane in war and peace. In accepting this office of an aviators wife she did this full knowing that she had the very real risk of losing her life-companion and spouse to an accident that could happen any time her husband took off in an A-4 or whatever be was flying. HER energy and passion for performance and Excellence is beyond words and yes, she WAS the woman behind ALL of your dad's success as well as yours in your chosen professions. THANK you SO much for sharing your mom's story. I will use YOUR tribute as an example of ALL that a military spouse and aviators spouse could be. HER story has been immortalized in your fitting tribute! She was ALL that a man could ask for in a friend, spouse and life partner. May God reward her with a "Well done, thou faithful servant. Enter into the joy of thy Master. Hard for me not to cry. What a great tribute to our moms.. Where would we be without them?.. Where would our Dads be without them? They are Gods messengers.

I just wanted to say that this was a beautiful tribute and that your mother looks like a larger than life human being. I know how difficult it must have been to make this, but I am glad you did, because your mother is worth being remembered
