The most in depth critique/review of this album i've heard so far. Much appreciated. Have been putting off listening to this album so far after detesting the last one. May take the plunge now.

I totally agree, I echo your sentiments for both this album and "Future Bites" which could have been named "This Album Bites". I gave it a cursory listen and maybe played it through twice. It didn't move me at all and was instantly forgettable except for maybe two tunes, but I don't remember them either. I didn't like "To The Bone" either, one of his most blasé efforts yet. Hard to believe they both come from the artist that wrote, "Stupid Dream" and "Light Bulb Sun" also "Deadwing" which make a stellar triumvirate. The reviewer did an excellent job cutting through the wealth of info to study on this to make a coherent review.

Great analysis! I've listened to this album several times, but have not been greatly impressed, however I will continue and give it some more time, in the light of your point-of-view. It deserves more consideration.

I have to say as the singles released I was mostly underwhelmed, with the exception of Tightrope. But after living with the album for about a week through multiple listens, it's really grown on me. I wasn't constitutionally opposed to The Future Bites, I just thought it was missing all the great Wilson songwriting hallmarks that make the genre of the music largely secondary. It was essentially boring as hell. THC is a brilliant return in my opinion.

He's said that this time he had no particular agenda when writing the material, something that had not happened before in his solo career at least. Personally i really liked the album in the beginning, it felt like the next step in his discography and the first time in years that he's found a unique sound. But the more i listen to it it's starting to sound too clean and sterile, that lacks some edge, and ABF sounds too much like Massive Attack. Maybe that's just him growing older and becoming a master in his producer craft. I like his lyrics, specially when he's singing about life getting increasingly harder, providing for his family and feeling insecure about the future, like in staicase, or making a statement about his artistic integrity in inclination. I think the concept is more about how he looks at life and music in his late 50s, an extension of the themes in Limited Edition of One, and a couple of spoken word passages referencing the story. I remember him saying that he saw the staircase in the cover as a metaphor for life and passage of time

Interesting! Maybe I'll like it less with time. I'm surprised how dismissive people have been toward it in the comments for this video.

Oh god, here we go again. It's AI music, Steven Wilson done by numbers, it's boring, it's not experimental, it's OK nothing more. I can't be bothered anymore.
