My wife and I did a very simple wedding: just a church wedding and tea buffet. No guo da li, tea ceremony, gatecrash, groomsmen, bridesmaids or wedding banquet. Saved so much money and time (I think we even earned back from the ang paos!) We also did our house renovation during the same time as our wedding because we got a resale flat 8 months before our wedding. Completed renovations just as we got married and moved into our flat within 1 week of getting married. Fast game. We are thankful to both have simple minded and practical parents.

Can you invite parents to the podcast to talk about weddings? I'd love to hear their point of view.😆

The best advice is: Spend money on your marriage, not on the wedding.

I didn’t even know my proposal was going to be my dream proposal😂 Context - My partner is Australian and we live in Melbourne (I moved from Singapore 6 years ago to study) and we’ve been together and living together for 5 years now. The rs I have with my parents is typical of an adult child trying to break free of tradition and the cycle. Low contact etc. My parents kept trying to dictate when he was to propose. Whenever we were on the phone, the topic would somehow come up in conversation, my mum would try to persuade us from not getting engaged until they got to Melbourne to visit at the end of the year. This one particular night, she kept asking me to hand the phone over to my partner because she wanted to speak to him directly to not propose until they got there. I was furious because we are not doing anything as a couple on anyone else’s timeline but ours. I stormed upstairs to try and gentle parent my mother. I came down after, still fuming when my partner took the ring out and said, “Let’s really pissed off your parents.” Say less!😂 It was perfect (to me).

Complicated wedding planning is a bane to marriage. Parents’ interference accentuates this. Period.

I have always said that event has always been to annouce that a wedding is taking place back in the day. so why and when and how did it evolve into a gate crash ? If Q wants to march in 2x. instead of a gate crash hire some bros to carry the sedan carriage. 2 lions to escort the march to the wedding place then to the dinner.

Economies of scale… a big wedding doesn’t mean you’d lose money. In fact; if you can keep the per pax cost below a reasonable expected Ang pow (like say 150/200); then you’d in fact make money by inviting more people.

Not sure if anyone faced the same issue and would be happy to hear some usefu sharing. If both you and your partner are having bad rs especially yourself with your own parents. How to continue the wedding? On 1 end feels bad to not invite them but on the other end really no mood or even courage to even bother reaching out to invite. 1 end feels like why so short-changed and unfair that other couples can have their own parents support (including the money part) The other end feels like fxk la think about them already headache. Because of this issue, wedding planning still at stage 0. Really don't know how to move forward.

19:26 Huh? Turn around lor. Our feet aren't fixed on the bathroom floor. Only time when I will linger with my back facing the shower is when I'm all done, but want to "luxuriate" under the rain shower. Very therapeutic.
