It's the late 80s early 90s all over again. Cheaper materials, lack of quality control, and advertising lies all wrapped in a more expensive package. It's bullshit and people deserve to be upset and fed up. Honestly that is why I hardly buy games at all now. I have gamepass ultimate and a MASSIVE backlog of games. I don't buy a damn thing day one anymore since Battlefield 5 launched. They burned everyone by releasing the game to preorders and didn't say the coop multiplayer wasn't launching for another 3 months until right at launch. Now I buy all of these games on sale with deep discounts. I want to play Jedi Survivor so bad, but the issues that game had tell me it is a $25 or less game. That's when I will buy it. The biggest problem with the gaming industry are the investors and their unreasonable expectations. FF7 Remake vs Rebirth is a prime example. Rebirth is a better game, but is considered a “failure” because it was released on PS5 (with less than half the install size of the PS4) and because it had no pandemic to push it, it didn’t sell as well. Also the fatigue of over saturation in FF and other RPGs and blockbuster games was to blame. We just got FF16 last year and I still haven’t had a chance to play that one yet (couldn’t put down Tears of the Kingdom at the time).

I understand budgets are ballooning, and not in a good way. But there was a time to allow more experimental titles. Sadly all of those titles are rarely made anymore, unless it is super successful And consoles life span. Something needs to change to let a system show off what it can do. I think this malaise has been bubbling in the background since the start of the 8th gen. I noticed that while first party PS4 games certainly looked better, I didn't enjoy them as much as PS3 games. Even then people were complaining about games getting dumbed down for normies. This was also the time scummy mobile business practices began to be incorporated into traditional gaming. GG 1.0 and ESG also dropped, which led to the industry over-correcting and hiring on a ton of these vapid activists. Skip ahead to today, and there's really nothing coming down the pipe that I'm excited about. I'm not spending $650 Canuck Kopeks for a PS5 just to play Stellar Blade. I don't play online, so none of these live services appeal to me. Most games now are too expensive, lazy, money grubbing, and broken. Investors keep trying to squeeze more blood from a saturated industry. The politics stuff is getting worse. Even Nintendo have been absolute butt nuggets lately with their crap customer service, broken controllers, online service shutdowns, and the war on emulation. It's all very exhausting. I've gone back to playing older stuff, and even there, almost entirely Japanese games. Definitely the worst it's been in my 30 years of gaming.

The way I see it, backlogs are a thing many people should be looking at. I frankly don't get this fixation with getting showered with new things while ignoring the remaining 95%+ things gathering dust in a corner and pretending there's this contrived sense of scarcity people just make up to rationalize their outrage over relatively dry release periods, especially now when undercooked new things are notoriously broken on release.

I think it might be far more societal than ever. Back in 2019, my big concern was that too many games were coming out, and there were some titles that we wind up passing up. As a Switch owner, I have managed to pick up some games that I passed up in the previous years. But I think the problem is far worse than ever when we all have far shorter attention spans than we used to. Case in point: I do want to finish up on a game that I've been playing. But at the same time, other games try to grab my attention span and I want to go play those instead. Worst case scenario is that I don't even bother to play a game because of that, or because of other things I want to do, like drawing, writing a fanfic, and other projects. Or even real life gets in the way. As someone who is aware of the Switch 2, I'm not as concerned about it as I'm supposed to. Why? I think I've gotten to the point where I have enough games to last the rest of my lifetime. Sure I know there won't be any games I will be able to finish. But I'll be glad to have played to my dying breath.

For me personally, I can’t play every game that comes out because work or unreasonable prices. But it’s also because, most games aren’t good enough for my time. Either it be unfinished & buggy games, or microtransactions & battle passes. (Suicide Squad…) But I can safely say for the time being, the only games I’m looking forward to that will fulfill my gaming needs are *Hades 2*, *Dragon Ball Sparking Zero*, (Even tho I think their will be DLC, the base game content might be justified for purchase) *Stellar Blade* *Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2*, *Black Myth Wukong* and even games that came out earlier are also pretty good. *Tekken 8*, *Persona 3 Reload*, *FF Rebirth* even though two of these are remakes, they’re built from the ground up and excel the originals in many ways

I think there's a number of things that are happening. First, the game industry is still recovering from the pandemic. Yes, the US opened up really quickly but a lot of nations didn't lift lockdowns and restrictions until relatively recently. This affected game release schedules and caused year 3 and year 4 games to get pushed back even further. Second, because of how Covid affected things, big companies are looking to make more money. One of the ways of doing that is remakes and remasters. Another way is live service games. This makes the AAA industry look as though it's stagnating, which, it kind of is. Companies aren't willing to take risks on new and original ideas because they just can't afford to. Third, when a company does actually make a big budget single player game, many times they lack the polish and quality that games of the past had because there's so much more going on in them now, they were made at a time where most people were working from home so there wasn't as much QA, and the publishers want to put them out before they're actually finished despite the developers telling them they need more time. Fourth, the indie scene is definitely over saturated. There's way too many games and way too many same template but slightly different theme games. Don't get me wrong, there's still original stuff out there, but it's few and far between in comparison to everything else.

I think its a bunch of many factors. One of the main i feel is just desensitization to the games themselves even if they are great and compelling. As a kid i would replay the same game all the time because i loved it but also there was not as many other games being released at the same time. The market is so flooded with games being released every few weeks of all different genres added to the fact that we only have a certain amount of life to play them leads to constant switching and moving onto the next thing. I guess its just FOMO in a lot of cases

Gaming isnt stale at all. Some of ya need to expand what genres you play. There are a lot of great games that released this year so far. Also play your backlogs. Pick up older games you never played. You don't have to play every new game on release to enjoy gaming. Also gamers themselves are to blame why gaming is in the state it is in. Gamers don't support new games even though they want new ideas. Gamers also want these high fidelity games but then complain that games are taking so long to make.

I agree on some points, but I disagree with other points. You expect people to buy broken, unpolished, lazy, and full of political checklist video games. Games aren't being made for consumers anymore. Instead, it's about a message about society and how there isn't enough representation in games. How about companies stop the political messages and focus on what consumers want. All I want is a good video game. I don't care if it's a reboot, remake, or sequel just do it right.

For me, I think VR is what will push innovation in the gaming industry moving forward. Yes, it's still super niche even to this day and I'm definitely romanticizing here, but I'm hoping it evolves to a point where it's like SAO without the irl dying. It'd just be so cool to really feel like you're in a MMO world doing raids with your friends and pulling off those actions with your in-game body. Or even something similar to CP2077's braindances as eerie as that sounds. Idk if the tech will ever advance to that point or if we'll be alive if it does come to fruition but the possibility of that becoming a real thing would definitely push the whole entertainment industry as a whole; not just gaming.

Been a subscriber for a long time but never comment much, as a gamer that’s your age I think you hit the nail on the head. I thought i was losing interest in gaming just cause I was getting older have a family etc. but I think it’s just the lack of competition and inovation on developers part but I gotta play devils advocate and look in the mirror. I think a lot of gamers 30+ years old including myself are a little weary of games that don’t have a familiar track of quality now that were the ones spending our earned money. When I was a kid my parents would buy me a game for snes and if I didn’t like it oh well now if I spend 70 bucks on a game in this economy and don’t like it..well that sucks big that was my water bill for the month I just wasted. Honestly though I think the constant flood of games that no mortal man has enough time to play while also excelling to their fullest in life is a big problem too. When we were kids and had one system only a couple good games came out per year so you’d play them, beat them then play them again until the next good game came out plus if you remember they were 70 dollars back then for a brand new game so they were more of a luxury like when older generations only drank soda as a treat now people drink soda like it’s water. Idk I’m rambling cause I’m drunk but like you said it’s a very nuanced situation with the way the video game industry has become especially for older gamers that have experienced it from its starting point basically the NES era and onward

I may get the new Paper Mario but Nintendo is hyping it enough. I'll probably return to gaming when the Switch 2 comes along.
