Think back to when Owens mom passed, Flora's little speech to him. "What if I was already dead, but everyone could still see me?" Or something along those lines. And then they cut to Hannah real quick.

And then as an additional knife twist in your emotions, her continually reminding herself of all the details so that she doesn't fade away. It's really heartbreaking. Probably most heartbreaking character in any Mike Flanagan show. Even in Hill House, at least the people there continue to exist in relative peace and continuity, whereas here she's stuck in a loop and is slowly forgetting everything.

Owen says in his conversation with Hannah that he is part of her subconscious… the memories are put together to get Hannah to realize she’s dead. Owen is a “sounding board” of her mind to put the pieces together - but part of her subconscious. She starts the mantra at the end, because if she doesn’t admit she’s dead she can stay physical which is why she can touch stuff and be seen while Peter goes in and out. He admitted he was dead and acknowledged it so doesn’t have the strength Hannah does. Very sad but very good episode. It’s a controversial one- some like the going in and out of memories, some say it was too confusing but I really liked it and had no issues understanding what they were going for.

i don't know if anyone has commented on this but every episode is named after a henry james book (the author of the turn of the screw the book this show is adapting) and they took parts and plots of those stories and blended them into the main story which i think its pretty cool and it makes this show and this adaptation richer, more original and unique specially for those of us who already knew the story. sorry if my english is not the best lol spanish is my first language

While yes, this episode leaping into different times is about her being dead and being in denial of it, it is also like a representation of what dementia is like. That's why the episode mentions dementia a few times. Similarly, in Hill House, episode 5 is a representation of Nell's depression and being haunted by her own death.

Have you noticed by now what the overarching real theme of this series is? So what the series is really about, if you remove the supernatural. In Hill House it was unprocessed, suppressed trauma and their consequences. Here at Bly Manor it is memories in the whole spectrum. Dementia , Alzheimer's, memories disappearing, losing Identity (faceless Lady in the lake). If you want to watch the series from this perspective. In principle, in this series, as in Hill House, the supernatural is just a metaphor.

Its a fantastic episode, frustrating and complex as Hannah weaves in and out of her and even Rebecca's memories. Desperately trying to hold on to her sense of self and understand what has happened. Even seeing Owen as her conscience. "Well" enough alone AND "Miles" away. All the puns!! Anyway, Blake and I are in good company because I've also suspected for quite some time that Hannah Grose has been some sort of spectral being, although strangely corporeal. Her generally odd behaviour tipped me off. Although nice enough, she always seems so "scattered" and odd. It's been clear to all, I think, that Miles was possessed of an "unclean" spirit for quite some time and that he's dangerous. It's a good thing I wasn't in this story because Miles might've wound-up in the well, himself. 😉Apparently, Hannah is condemned to remain within the limits of the estate, the glue-trap. I think all the spirits/ghosts seen likewise. They're ghostly prisoners. Owen says: Memories fade, we could fade out at any time. Or something like that. Yes, I think "memory" or "memories" are a key. Without memory, Hannah is afraid she'll fade away. Is that what's happened to the other ghosts? No one knows who they are anymore? Didn't they allude to something like this in "HIll House?" Yes, when Olivia was talking about the dead kitten at its funeral to Shirley. She said something like we become alive again after death when people remember us. Something like that. Is that why Hannah is always in the chapel lighting candles? It's an act of remembrance. Unless I've missed something, the big question now is what or who is that "thing" that walks from the lake, why is it so deadly dangerous to anyone it encounters? Apparently, someone remembers it otherwise it would disappear, right? Are all those other spirits in the house its past victims? Because the one ghost wears an ancient plague mask, this thing, which I presume killed him, must be quite old, I'm thinking.
