No but it's still tragic and incredibly sad whenever you do see her. The thing with horror is that fear lasts as long as you are in the shadows about what it is that's haunting. That's why it's important later on to replace that fear with either another emotion to compensate the lack of fear, or change the first fear into a second fear, something else lurking. That's why by the end of the series you're eyes are just soaked with tears. Well written horror storytelling is just beautiful on its own.

I've seen this episode probably a dozen times at this point. Technically, the episode is a marvel. The amount of work and precision is astounding. But beyond that, it's also the most human episode in the series yet; the raw emotion portrayed in so many scenes. And that ending. You know exactly what is going to happen as the camera pans around but it still hits like a dump truck. I don't think I've watched it without crying yet.

If I remember correctly, the sets (Hill house, funeral home) were designed and built with this exact episode in mind, for the long takes. Brilliant episode and yes I teared up again, dammit Elliotts! I love it. “Flies across the country to puke on his dead sister.” “Please Luke, don’t fuck this up.” Yet when everyone else was busy going after each other’s throats, Luke was the only one there really remembering Nell, paying respects. Both Shirl and Theo blamed Nell for her own suicide, and Steve was only interested in what happened to Nell for validation that he was right all along, that the family has an illness. “What if something gets her?” “I thought the house things had got you. I thought they took you.” I love that little Luke was particularly “in tune” with the house’s “intentions” and was consistently worried that it would take his sister. Drives home the emotions that present-day Luke showed when it finally sank in that yes, the house did take Nell after all. Ugh I love them.

The long shots were spectacular and I want to shout out the kid actors on this because they were absolutely brilliant. Other things I like are goofs that stayed in to make it more realistic. For example some actors stumbled on words. Younger Hugh stepped on a piece of the chandelier and when Theo fell that wasn't part of the script, they just kept going.

this episode was amazing. I believe it had four long takes. The first one cut after 15 minutes. However the point you made about mental illness was indeed something that the director toyed with. nothing the family has seen is due to “mental illness.” all of the ghosts and delusions that each of them have seen is due to hill house itself. the show draws a lot from the comparison of mental illness to being actually haunted but what the characters are seeing is real or being shown to them by the house. all of them have trauma in various forms from their experiences in the house (including their mother dying because of the house) but all of that was caused by living there and not inherent to them
@missymartinez9923
4 жыл бұрын
Exactly and I think that's why I got so pissed at Steve. Yes mental illness is hereditary, but you can also inherit it due to severe traumatic experiences. Like most soldiers are abled and mentally strong. You have to be, but are completely fucked mentally when they get back. So everytime steve would mention that it was hereditary, that he was terrified of having children. I always just stared mad hard at him like: "Dude, you denying this stuff happened is a mental illness in of itself." Complete and utter denial even if things are presented as fact (seeing his mom in this episode and seeing Nell at the end of the first episode)

I always think it’s weird when people refer to the Bent Neck Lady as “Hill House’s scariest monster.” Every time after episode five, when she shows up there’s no fear, just sadness. Like on an existential level, her existence is pretty horrifying but as far as fear goes, it’s just Nell.

But she doesn't know that she can see into the future and so she thinks that the bent neck lady is also a ghost. It was still the Bent-Neck Lady who was creeping up on Nell after Steve and Hugh comforted her in Episode 1, I'm guessing that when she died, she just went back in time to the moments where younger Nell actually saw the Bent-Neck Lady - like some underlying effect (both past and future meeting in the present). Or maybe they just didn't have time to put in every scene where the Bent-Neck Lady was, like in the episode here when younger Nell was tumbling into the room with the statutes.
