Different Journeys founders, Merrin Ayton and Mel Spencer OAM, share how their meeting and lived experiences led to the creation and growth of the organisation. In 2014, they realised that existing social events weren’t meeting the needs of their autistic children, so they decided to create their own space-one where their children could be their authentic selves and connect with others who understood them. As Different Journeys expanded, Merrin and Mel also saw a significant lack of support for unpaid carers, prompting them to develop a carer peer support program. This initiative empowers carers to navigate services and advocate for themselves. These simple but powerful ideas have since become the foundation of the vibrant, supportive community that Different Journeys continues to build and nurture.
