When you said heaviest chord I thought to myself “oh the open C chord with the low G on the low E.” Then you said triad and I was like “oh maybe not.” Well you got me, I didn’t realize it was a triad until you made it so obvious. FWIW David Bazan of Pedro the Lion makes heavy use of that shape, I recommend checking out the album “control” for some good examples.

I dunno. The "add 5th below stacked powerchord" that Petrucci likes is awfully heavy.
@ivansuner2120
4 жыл бұрын
I was about to say the same thing. Petrucci style stacked power chord (sometimes as a ninth chord) is really darn heavy. Mastodon throws the fifth under their power chords as well. I think the only difference is that a second inversion triad can be a closed chord which might sound a bit muddy depending on tone setup and string clarity. The petrucci style ninth chord always sounds tight if you roll the bass off a bit on your amp.

It's really just doing the "next lower" set of barre chords without the root notes. I used to do it as a joke to prove the guitar can play lower than E chords without changing the tuning. Do a power chord "scale" of G F E, and then you have those triad inversions continuing the scale downward another 3 steps. The root note isn't there, but since it is the proper chords, your brain still hears it as a descending scale. And yea, it sounds *heavy*.

It's fine for dad rock (says the 49-year-old woman who plays a 7-string and is possibly vaguely insulted by being called a cheater). The problem with triads is they can't be mixed in actual metal. They turn it into a wall of noise. Hence, the entire reason power chords exist...to get rid of the third tone that creates a harmonic which renders to mix nothing but a noisy mess. Once you've added that level of distortion, you can't use the third tone. But, like I said, it's fine for dad rock. Mom rock on the other hand...needs a bit more girth.

This is why music theory is important, not just in relation to making good music, but to know these kind of things. Theory is like grammar, you don't need to know it, but it's very useful when to comes to communicating melodies and different sequences.
