Love the lawn/garden tractor talk, especially when you guys show some of the old brochures. I made a comment about the Lo Boy 185 on one of the other videos, just found this video, so making another comment. I feel the folks at Tractor Data may have gotten a little lazy and just need to update their site. There are clearly several lawn/garden tractors that Tractor data list on the farm tractor side and not on the lawn/garden side of their site. I think they just wanted to get as many tractors listed as possible, regardless of the right category. Clearly, when you look at the Lo Boy 154, 184, and 185, they are lawn machines and not farm tractors. Outside of pulling a small wagon, not going to be doing much farm work with these. Yeah, the original ones with the very tall tires and off set steering you could do some small row crop applications. Oh well. What ever you want to call the Lo Boy, I want one for Christmas. Thanks for the lawn/garden tractor videos.

I agree with your statements. My brothers neighbor had a 184 with a loader. I always thought the 184 was the sharpest of the bunch, and I agree they are really overgrown garden tractors. Thanks for commenting 🙏 We’re glad you are enjoying the series 👍

Wish I had this knowledge 40 years ago! Great videos for us city boys that became country men! I have a two wheel Gravely about a 1976. Need to rebuild the Zenith carb. Love that walking tractor! Would like to see a video on the David Bradley walking tractor. I had a patient that was a wizard at gardening and that was all he used. It wasn't much for looks but my patient and friend could work wonders with it.

Tractor Data lists the Honda 6522 as a GT at 1700lbs but with cat 1 linkage, the smaller H5518 is pretty heavy too at around 1000lbs, but more of a legit GT with cat 0 linkage. Both of those would be DRY weights, no fuel, battery, oil etc. They also consider Steiner garden tractors and I know they have a couple over 1500lbs likely with cat 1 linkage however. I can't think of any other heavy GT's off hand but if one comes to me I'll comment it lol

It is interesting that TractorData labels the Speedex and Strongland tractors you guys looked at as garden tractors. Were subcompact tractors not as big of a deal back then? I certainly would also opt for the Lombardini diesel, it is hard to say no to more power!

To be honest Gan, Tractordata doesn’t list Speedex or Strongland at all in any category. It’s a secret brand shrouded in mystery

Interesting. yeah you are right: If a limit is not placed on the size and weight (and power) where does one start to draw the line on when a garden tractor is too darn big? I enjoy the discussion of what are the outer limits of a garden tractor. I generally use the guideline of which one can I fit readily into the back of my long bed compact pickup with home-made ramps (under 1000 lbs & usually under 7' length without any attachments in 2wd form)-- ha ha!!; & is the simplest (single cylinder, air cooled, rear drive, generator I can rebuild in my basement, gravity fed fuel system, costs the least for the job, easiest to change starter, no fuel pump, no water pump, no radiator, no cab, single front spindles for the front wheels, etc) because I always think what would I do if I was surviving in a really, really serious economic meltdown like another awful Great World Wide Depression & which therefore is the easiest to fix with simple tools but will do the job & punch above its weight; sufficient power to do the job which can be as little as 7-8hp with gear drive, but would max out at 18 hp for single cylinder engines (which is plenty for a splash lube power-plant!). I have found 12 hp good, 14 very good and 18hp single cylinder Kohlers over the top in torque for a single cylinder 18hp! This varies of course depending on what kind of terrain you are living on (mountainous or flat land), what the weather is like (Cold snowy Winters or no snow all year round? Mud & rainy frequent? etc.). In my area of southeast Michigan it is mostly flat so 2wd is OK, and snow is only 40-80 inches and it usually doesn't fall in 20" piles at a time so a snow blade plow is simple and also OK for very light (loose dirt) landscaping although I am looking for a mid blade for my 69 Cub Cadet 125 (12hp hydro). But if I was in the Upper Peninsula (lots of snow) Michigan I would favor, of course, 4wd which could bump me above the 1000 lb range. Considering all this I could still make use of a 0 cat, 3-point hitch & if the trans is dependable I can go for a hydro-static or hydraulic (like on the Case models) which makes back and forth work a ton easier, but it is true that properly used gear transmissions will last and last. By the way, I have a 4x4 sub compact Massey-Ferguson 2310 (23 hp diesel) and the 4x4 has been indispensable in the mud working on a building site in the rain!! It seems to me there are a few 2wd garden tractors that meet my needs with each having advantages based o their design and weight distribution: In original condition anyway: a Gravely 14G Pro Series which I think has the best pulling power of any 2wd garden tractor because of all the weight in the back (845 lbs); a Case 644 Industrial Garden tractor (the only industrial garden tractor (designed with a beefed up front end including multi lug front wheels) ever made in the US in the 1970s anyway. (--It did have a fuel pump on it's 14 hp Kohler engine & again had mutli-lugs on the front hd wheels) and weighed well under 1000 lbs (about 785 lbs??) without the loader that came with it and was so well integrated into the design!. Very efficient design and I could still stuff it into the back of a full length bed pickup!; 1969-74 Case 444 (14 hp, hydraulic drive, bigger 16" rear wheels); 68-74 John Deere 140H3 (like the Cadillac of garden tractors with the 14hp Kohler (except for 68 model year)!); the Economy Power King 1618 (18 hp model with the 16" diameter rear wheels) was I think just under 1000 lbs and I got to experience one recently that was pretty darn impressive even though it does have mutli-lug front wheels instead of a single nut they sure seem darn easy to service. I favor the Kohler engines but that is partly because of some familiarity with them and i still do not know why Kohler put the balance weights on the 14hp as they appear to do nothing (I have 14hp 1970 Kohler in one of my Cubs (1970 Model 147)... So anyway to rehash I use weight and length as a limiting factor which also means I can store it and it's attachments more easily. I went to Alabama to pick up my Cub Cadet 147 and everything including three attachments all fit nicely in my older compact Ranger pickup (but it does have the longer (just over 7 feet inside the tailgate") bed length!

Very interesting points. Great post. I agree with your determining factors on what qualifies a GT. I hope there is no depression coming, but I’m as prepared as I can be if there is. 😉

One added comment. To me rarity can be OK but I would rather own a tractor with higher production levels whether from popularity, whereby it achieved high production levels, or from the fact that the engineers made a good design did not mess with the basic features & design parameters very much for year after year because parts availability and familiarity with the machine is increased. I like a machine that just works and works and I don't care much about rarity!

I agree with your points. Rare machines like the Strongland tractors, Wheelhorse D250, GMT9000 etc are more novelty machines at this point.
