I think one could make the argument, that sometimes you don't have the additional resources needed for the heavyweight install (there are alternative distros for that, though) or the necessary time or know-how to safely remove all of the components that you might view as "bloat", or even the ability to identify what might fit in that category. That's why some even enjoy building their own distros, or having highly custom Arch installs. I use Linux Mint btw, honestly it just works and I even switched over to the Cinnamon desktop after using XFCE for the longest time ever, plus not having such a heavy push for snaps is just sublime!

Idea: OS installs should be in 'reverse'. The OS comes with drivers and heavy machinery to support every possible hardware and application configuration, then at the end of the install or at any point later, the user can run a 'prune' or 'optimize' command that strips most things that fulfill both criteria of having never been used, and not being part of a 'common requirement' whitelist.

From my experience it depends on what specific resource it's heavy on, because this varies greatly: * Heavy on CPU: Gentoo, especially during installation and package management because it requires you to compile everything from source (if you don't have a Threadripper, it's going to take days to install) * Heavy on RAM: probably Mint or Pop! OS, although Gentoo also has an issue in this category when compiling qtwebengine in particular * Heavy on graphics: definitely Garuda * Heavy on disk space: there are several options here, and sure, Qubes is definitely one of them, but so too are penetration testing distros - Parrot for example will literally take up 16GB of disk space of whatever it's installed on, while a full, complete BlackArch installation (i.e. literally running `pacman -S blackarch) will set you back 60GB just in the sheer number of hacking tools alone. Not sure how Kali compares to those two as I haven't used it as much (only very briefly as CEHv12 switched entirely to Parrot for its official VM set).

Interesting. I never see Mint as 'heavy' - in part cos just 3GB download (including LibreOffice and all other software basic user needs), but also because I use the MATE desktop, which now is about the same RAM (sometimes lower) than the 'lightweight' XFCE. Has all the functionality I could want and is intuitive. Mint out performs all other distros except in one area: it's not bleeding edge updates cos its based on Ubuntu, but we can never get around sacrificing bleeding edge software for stability, so fundamentally I prefer stability (and really, unless there is a specific new feature you want from software that's only compatible with a newer Ubuntu OS, then stability is always better).
