Really like your breakdown and teaching of heel-toe Owen. Wanja Gröger is the main advocate I’ve seen for "heel-toe single strokes", as you might know. I find it a compelling technique in that (to me) it’s basically the same physicality for each foot but just rhythmically "offsetting" the other foot by half the value of whatever the first foot plays. That said, I’m struggling with keeping my balance using it (as a lover of metal but not someone who’s played much)!

I think I’ll just stick to the regular double-stroke-rolls… the idea of offsetting it just breaks my brain haha 😅

@@OwenAlec I may end up switching to/trying out doubles at some point ("sounds no different on a record", as one previous teacher said), if it ends up breaking my brain too much :D

Thanks for putting out great stuff. Remember watching some of your stuff back with the Haken Virus release, loved that deep dive into it. Came back now and love these takes. Will take this with me to my kit and focus on improving. Would love to see you have you delve into what things you found the hardest with drumming, and ways for you to overcome those.

Hi and thank you for the informative video. I got a question. Do you lift your toes up at the heel stroke? I do but it's adding tension which I'm not sure it's necessary.

I do, but the more you get comfortable with the technique, the less exaggerated the motion (lifting the toes) becomes. So in time, the tension will decrease.

2:00 I`ve been trying for years and I can`t for the life of me get the first heel stroke. I just hit the board and nothing substantial comes out. (Normal size legs, Pearl eliminator, medium spring tension). What am I doing wrong? P.S I have been playing for 30 years "normal" double bass+I can do the motion on the floor no problem.

There's a few things you can try, to get that first stroke: 1. Make sure your starting position is correct - Toes down, beater against the head. 2. During the first stroke, bring the toes up as well as heel down. 3. Use the ball of the foot to make the first stroke. 4. If that doesn't work, try using the bridge of your foot instead. 5. Don't use too much power to begin with, try less power more control, but a more exaggerated motion. 6. You could always try altering your seat position slightly, to see what works better for you. (Up/Down & Forward/Backwards) If none of these work, drop me a message on my FB page and we can talk it through more. Hope this helps.

@@OwenAlec Thanks for the elaborated response. The thing that frustrates me the most is that i`m a pretty good drummer, savvy in quite a few double bass techniques and still feel like total noob when it comes to this one. Maybe I used too much power - i`ll try to reduce and report back.
