@sniperbarbie8179

@kristy5698 The book (and film) is based on personal and true experiences. In both the book and film, the maids complain that the children they once loved and cherished, the kids that showed love back, grew up and became their bosses and treated them like trash. Yes, perhaps in other contexts kids remember good experiences and nurture, but in THIS context, apart from the main character (I forget her name. Skeeter i think?) who loved her maid as an adult (and was devastated by her death), and I'm not even sure if the main character was actually fiction or not and added in for entertainment value, but in general, the children didn't seem to remember all that love when they became adults, from the maid's experiences. Unfortunately teaching hate within family and society over powers everything.
@sniperbarbie8179

@kimcreatesstuff Exactly. I think that's actually one of the most important features of the book and this part of history. These women put their all into loving The white children and in return they were treated like absolute trash. It's a fantasy to pretend that the kids grew up, remembered that love and fought for those women and their rights. We literally KNOW that didn't happen. If they remembered how well they were treated, rights for Black women in America would have came FAR sooner. Yet they didn't.

This was heart wrenching, because that little girl wouldn't use the potty. She was still running around in diapers, and driving her mama crazy. She was having a hard time with potty training. The first time she uses the potty properly, its one of these in her mamas front yard. Now that her mama humiliated her by yelling at her, and spanking her for finally using the potty, imagine the trauma and embarrassment she will have going to the bathroom from now on. Viola, the hired help, tries to reassure the little girl, but her mama is so stuck up that she soon fires viola, and her little girl loses the onlt person that cares about her. This was a great movie. Right up there with Fried Green Tomatoes.

The side door was for white tradesmen, and the back door was for the help. They only had a key to the back door. The other doors were keyed differently. You wonder why in Kentucky? I know parents like this and I felt like Viola watching these kids get neglected then when they finally take the steps to do something challenging and show their parent the parent is so disinterested they completely discourage the child and make them feel bad or even dicipline them because its not done the way the parent wanted. Well if you wanted your kid to do something your way you fucking sit down and teach them and if youre teaching aint working then you try different things. If you resort to passing your kids along or ignoring them until they do stuff you like then you shouldnt have kids you should get a pet. I myself grew up with a mom just like that and my granny bless her soul died on me when I was 9. She raised me cause my mom wouldnt and I remember begging my mother for approval and guidence and finding it in strangers and neighbors after granny died, Not my mom. It messed me up so bad I had severe agoraphobia to the point I couldnt even go to the store for pads until closing hour. She destroyed my confidence and I remember those who built it up. Wasnt my mom or her mom or my aunts it was my granny and her black neighbors. It was my ymca friends they always looked out for me. So I cry when I hear Violas mantra because its true sometimes all we need is that one person who believes in us to keep going and trying.

She was so proud to show her momma she finally used the potty only to get punished for doing what she thought was a good thing and baby girl will never understand why a person she loved and showed her love was snatched out of her life and for a very poor reason! 🤦♀️

I love how Aibeleen is a better mother than Celia... And it's so sad to see how devastated Celia's daughter was when Aibeleen is fired

And yet parents to this day still will make this same mistake: punish a child who does something right simply because it was embarrassing to the parent. Parents think about their own image over their child’s accomplishments and that how you get this kinda scenario - a little girl who FINALLY used the big girl potty (yay!) and a mom who punished her for it. Little kid just saw a toilet and was learning that’s where you go; it’s NOT the little girl’s fault the toilet was right in front of someone’s house - kids don’t think that way because that’s not how they process the world.

You do not punish a child for using the potty even if its "the wrong one" because you will instill fear around pottying amd delay the process. Praise when they succeed and tell them to try again later when they don't. Horrible mother, amazing second momma. Nanny's weren't just "help" they were momma's to these babies. Momma's, where they were only left with mothers. The one who births you isn't always your momma, sometimes she's just your mother.

I remember when my mom slapped me on a public transportation as a kid. When I mentioned it to her 10-15 years later, she said she didn't remember. Now, I’m unsure if it was just my imagination or if it really had a big impact on me. There are other instances she denies, like when I gave her a candle I bought during my elementary fun fair, and she was angry and told me not to waste money. Now that I’m working, she teases me to give her gifts. Sometimes, when I do, she says she doesn’t like them but will take it back whenever she saw my disappointed face and whenever I recall what she did during my elementary funfair.

I think this movie would make me sick now that I'm a parent myself. So many people don't deserve the angelic children they're given.

This is a great scene. It was funny and away because she was being potty trained, and she called her mother, cause she was proud of herself.

I wonder why these toilet pots were there. In the front garden, visible for everyone who walks by....

You have to see the movie. Hilly (not seen in this clip) was trying to get passed a segregated bathrooms initiative, because of supposed "different disease" the blacks had to the whites. She wanted her friend, (also not seen here), who worked at the newspaper, to put the initiative in the paper, so it could get seen, & gain support, & eventually be passed. But her friend who worked at the newspaper, didn't agree with Hilly, & wasn't racist like her. So to get back at her, or teach her a lesson, or distract her from the subject at hand, when the same friend asked her to also print an article for all old coats to be dropped off at her house for a coat drive, instead of coats, she printed commodes. That's why all those toilets were on the yard. They weren't supposed to drop off old commodes, they were supposed to drop off old coats. It was a fitting & embarrassing retribution though, because of the separate bathrooms initiative that was being pushed. The woman in this clip, who spanked her little girl, for pottying on the toilet, was Hilly's best friend, & right hand person. She couldn't think for herself, & looked to Hilly for affirmation.

It was a joke played on Hilly, one of the most unpleasant characters, people were supposed to be bringing old coats, but skeeter wrote in her news article “commodes” instead I think

My mother was a neurotic nut job like this one. Shouldn’t have been a parent, too much unresolved emotional trauma of her own.

The fact that Viola's character knew that her mother didnt love that child because she was fat and wanted attention. She tried to instill in her a kind of confidence she was never going to receive from her own mother. And she did it knowing that the little girl might one day grow up to hate her for neing Black.
