I am from an Island called Newfoundland that is very highly irish cultured. Our music is often confused as irish music although we call it Newfoundland its background is irish. We have a show on the radio that plays newfoundland music. But features many bands that are local or recognizable to only Ireland. Now this band is world wide but is never on that station. Its the best version of this song that I have heard. I heard a few different versions. This is the best version I have heard.

The Irish language radio station, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta here in Ireland plays quite a lot of music from Newfoundland. Some fine musicians come from there and the sound is pretty similar to our own.

Oh yeah, baby! This is why the "Kings" call their style "Folk and Roll"! And hey, soadfreak, I also caught them at Milwaukee Irish Fest and am really excited about the new CD coming out soon. Loved their original songs, and got to tell them so myself, when I had them sign one of my CDs.

Molly Moo I may propose a more positive interpretation :) The part of the song which tell that she drown on the river is called a "bridge" in music composition. A river... A bridge... And the soldier also drown even if it's not his wedding. He will definitely try something to keep Mary. I mean that they may have flew the village together faking their death, taking the bridge ! As the father is counting the story, she and the soldier are drown for his point of view :) So "step it out" would more apply on the flew than on her wedding :) But that's only a theory !

Well. In Poland we have a legend about a Wanda who didn't want a german. She was a king's daughter, and about to marry a german prince. She refused to do so. German prince was so mad he raided our homeland, and Wanda, despaired throw herself out of castle tower to stop bloodshead. After all she stepped out of something but at least she didn't marry a german :)
