When I was a kid, my dad had a Jaguar 420G. He got it just before the fuel crisis in the 70's so it soon became too expensive to drive so my dad bought a little plastic Reliant 3 wheeler which we all loved. The Jag sat in our garage for years collecting dust. After about 6 years we tried to start it but nothing happened and someone told us that we should have turned the engine a few times every year to keep the internals oiled. We sold it for about 200 quid to a scrap dealer. Around the same time we had the Jag, we also had a Flymo electric lawnmower which hovered above the grass as you cut it. We cut our lawn at least once a week over 20 summers with that thing. My father passed away in 2006 and his house was sold but we kept some of his tools and stuff between us. I came across the Flymo and took it back to my own home and continued to cut my grass with it for another 20 odd years thinking about my dad and our old family home every time I used it. I eventually moved to Germany and unfortunately I left the Flymo behind. I often wonder if it is still cutting grass after 50 years of service.

My 2015 S with 95,000 miles initially required numerous, mostly small repairs, that were all done during the first 4 years of general warranty. Since the warranty expiration, I have had one 12v battery replaced (very cheaply and conveniently by Tesla mobile service) and one upper control arm replaced (did it myself, $75). No other repairs or maintenance needed to this date. My battery degradation is 9.5%.

I was in UBER Tesla Model S last year and it had over 500,000 miles on it with the original battery. A family members 2013(?) Model-S has over 300,000 miles. They also have a Model-3 with pretty high mileage and their new CyberPunk truck is already piling on the mileage with several 1,200 plus mile trips. They are waiting on a the new Model-Y performance model. Their Model-X was piling on the mileage until the CyberPunk arrived. Not sure of its status now in their transportation scheme. From their experience, I personally would not hesitate buying a high mileage Tesla.

More critical to battery degradation is state of charge at which the car is left particularly when it's warm. Supercharging really is not the stress on the battery that people think. It's calendar aging and whether or not you're leaving the car with 80% or more in the battery in warm weather. 90% is particularly bad. This is responsible for most of the degradation particularly that are driven modestly in terms of miles but are older

EV batteries are more limited by calendar aging than mileage, if you drive 400k miles in 3 years, of course it can do that. But can you drive 100k in 16 years? probably not. As with all modern cars (EV or ICE), the limiting factor is usually finicky eletronics and computers that age out before 10 years. So much critical functions are dependent on fragile computers that once they break, it will cost more than the car's worth to repair and replace them. So these high tech cars will be calendar time limited than mileage. I'd really want to see a low tech EV, where most of controls are directed via analog circuits and relays that will last forever just like a transistor radio. You can still have a touch screen for navigation and infotainment, but don't put critical vehicle control functions in them, such as gear shift, climate, temperature etc. Physical door latches and windows. Then that EV will probably last 50+ years and 1M miles.

You do realize that there are Model S cars out there that have been around for 11/12 years right? On top of that, most people don’t expect their car to be worth much past 100 to 150k. At that point, you don’t even care about out the battery as the car isn’t worth fixing! EV’s are now proven to last well into high mileage. Those 10 + year old model S cars are still holding 70+ percent of their charge! Look it up!
@i6power30
5 ай бұрын
@@Aggie4life77 Yes, I read a stats that about 10-15% of model S that are 11 years + old have required battery replacement. I think the percentage would be higher if not for big portion of these model S's have gone out of service for other reasons such as electronic / computer, or motor failures.
@i6power30
5 ай бұрын
And you need to read my comment again. I'm not denying the battery longevity is already beating ICE cars, but the limiting factor for Tesla and any other modern cars that are heavily relying on computers is the failure of finicky electronic components and computers before battery degradation. And it's not limited just to EVs, many ICE cars especially in luxury and premium space suffer the same problems. Brands like Toyota are reliable only because they limit the use of the latest tech, and instead fall back to the analog circiots and physical controls that are enduring over long period of time. I have yet to see this methodlogy applied to any EV brands legacy or EV-only, they seem to think all buyers of EVs expects EVs to be high tech only.

From what I understand, battery life is not only affected by cycles, but its age. It gradually degrades just sitting there. Its also true of other components. Our hyundia has a corroded wiring harness making it unsaleable. Rubbers and plastics degrade over time. Besides batteries, I'm super interested in what components begin to fail at 5, 10, 15, 20 years. We have a Y and I'm hoping Tesla is taking a long view on this. Long life, repairibility, recyclibility are all important aspects of sustainability and economic efficiency. Something many manufacturers have not embraced.
