I'm 88 years old. Each of these guys has been my favorite for a period of time during my life but I will always be in awe of the greatest poet of my time. Even his gravelly, scratchy voice is unique. Read the words he's written even before putting them to music -- pure magic! The synchronicity of the lyrics to "Sunday Morning Coming Down" make me weep. My library has a book of his songs -- amazing !!! The name Kris Kristofferson will live on as long as his poetic genius is recognized by humanity.

Johnny Cash was my favorite, but they were all legends and incredible artists. I saw them in concert in 1993 at the Nutter Center in Dayton Ohio. What a show that was. Johnny Cash got a standing ovation when he performed "The Ragged Old Flag" and he seemed truly touched by the audience's response to his performance. I still get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes when I hear "The Highwayman" on the radio as it was my favorite song they did together.

Kris, for good reason, is my favorite. I went to high school with him in San Mateo, CA. Played football with on the high school team. When I have my morning walk, i listen to Kris and love his lyrics. “From the rocking of the cradle to the rolling of the hearse, the going up was worth the coming down”. He was a Rhodes Scholar, studied at Oxford and on his return, contemplated teaching English at West Point! Never made it, but headed to Nashville, TN and the rest is history.

Their performance of "Help Me Make It Through The Night" was great. Waylon also took that very arrangement and performed it at his last concert in 2000 at the Ryman. He had many of the very same musicians in his backing band that also supported the Highwaymen a decade earlier plus added some horns for a little extra kick. I have it on my playlists and listen to it frequently. I'll never get tired of that version

Waylon and Willie often played, performed, and recorded together. Cash and Waylon shared living quarters for a time, so I have no doubt that their living room witnessed frequent jam sessions with the 2 of them (and God only knows who else may have been included!) And Kris, well he commandeered a National Guard helicopter, flew it to Cash's house and landed it his front yard, just to grab his attention and hand him another demo tape. The stunt worked, and they became friends. The Highway Men was more of a project, a group of friends just jamming out. It was never intended to be a permanent band. Though, had the opportunity or inspiration for more work as a collective arisen, they may have done more. Of course, with the deaths of Cash and Ol' Waymore, that pretty much ended that. As a side note, Waylon Jennings was involved in a separate supergroup project with Jerry Reed, Mel Tillis and Bobby Bare. Bare, I think, is the only one of them still living. That group was known as Old Dogs, and they recorded a bunch of songs written by Shel Silverstein. Again, just a group of buddies having fun; not intended to be a permanent thing. It would be interesting to see another Country supergroup. But, for it to work, it would still have to be a bunch of buddies having fun; not some record executives just throwing some names on a stage

Kris Kristofferson was my favorite, although that is a bit like asking someone which is your favorite M&M. I think that Kris Kristofferson is an amazing song writer and he has written some of the most sexy and sensual country music ever. Songs like "Help Me Make it Through the Night" "For the Good Times" Loving Her Was Easier:" One More Time With Feeling: and "Me and Bobby McGee are incredibly passionate songs. And he has written so many others that are tough life songs like "Sunday Morning Coming Down": Why Me Lord" "The Profit." He has such a way with lyrics. I also love his voice too, so full of gravel and emotion. He gets me all hot and bothered with his singing and his words. Don't get me wrong. I love the other 3 too. But the reality is my order is Kris, Willy, Johnny and Waylon. All 4 of these musicians are on my music mixes, along with Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Dwight Yoakum, Ray Charles, Meryl Haggard, Marti Robbins, Loritta Lynn, George Straight and so many others.

They did get the name from the song but they nearly had to change it as there was already a group called The Highwaymen. It was settled when the original group got to open their show in a passing of the torch moment. Johnny and Waylon were always like brothers.Johnny basically discovered Kris while he was working as a janitor chasing a career in music and it sacrificing an initial career as professor of literature defying his parents and was a lot like the little brother of The Man In Black in business.. Johnny and Willie were the 2 who hadn't interacted as much before the group was formed if my memory serves me well but that changed of course. Even when they weren't doing shows anymore Cash and Nelson would do some shows for example and talk on stage about perhaps becoming Highwaymen again. In my mind they never truly split. They remained very good friends and all had more going than what they did together. If Johnny and Waylon had lived longer we would have got more modern shows. I have no doubt of that. Greatest Super group of all time. This is my genre of music and it still even boggles my mind at times that such a group were united. All absolute Superstars and legends in and beyond their own time. Spoiled for chouce but as a group it's the Highwaymen song. Hearing 4 parts of the same soul summing up their lives before moving on again is so special. Great video. Really enjoyed this 👍

Country music doesn't tend to NEED "super groups." Most if not all of the songs are very personally based, often powerfully sung and they're stories. For the most part. They can stand well enough on their own to not need a group. There are universally applicable country songs. There are universally applicable Rock songs, but most of them ARE done in a group. Country Roads. Crazy. Neither of them need a group. On The Other Hand. Long Black Veil. Rose Colored Glasses. Yes, you could do those in a group, but they don't HAVE to be. They're all powerful in their own way, and resonant on their own terms. Old Dogs, Children & Watermelon Wine. Rhinestone Cowboy, Desperado. Your Cheatin' Heart. Hell, Elvis was just as known as a Country artist. So while I like the members of The Highwaymen, and I'm glad they existed as a group, Country as a genre (not even "new" country; just Country) doesn't really need to have a "super group." They've had generationally a slew of awesomely talented artists.

I know for a fact that all 4 we’re friends long before the highway men and long after. Furthermore, they never intended to be together as a band. They were just 4 great, kind, generous, funny guys who were long time friends and colleagues who did a project together.

Willie Nelson is the coolest guy on the planet. Saw him at merriweather post. His huge bus pulled up, he walked on stage and did his set, said his goodbyes, got back in the bus and drove off.

Saw Johnny & his crew do a show from the risers at a high school football field.... did their set & the obligatory encores then did a little shtick where it looked like June had to pull him back on the bus & leave.

To get Johnny Cash's attention Kris landed his UH-1 HUEY Helicopter; (he was in the National Guard at the time) and a pilot. He handed Johnny the song he wrote that Johnny "made his own"; "Sunday Morning Sidewalk"; Kris was in the nosebleed seats of the auditorium for the CMA's IIRC when Johnny looked up at him & said the line about being stoned; the CMA's didn't want John to say that line. He defied the CMA that night.

Willie of course! But I think some big kudos needs to be given to Mickey Raphael! Without him the music would be so much less. They sing the best version of City of New Orleans & a lot of it has to do with Mickeys contribution!

I have loved the Hyway men . Kris Kristofferson was my favorite. He was so handsome and talented. I bought his records and tapes. His voice was so incomparable as so was his writing some of the best music ever. 🎶 ❤❤

The Highway men would never been formed if DAC was asked to be. Johnny, Kris and Waylon would not have stayed on.

Everyone says Cream was a "Supergroup." They were not --- the first use of the word applied to Blind Faith, and it was called 'super' because it was comprised of members of Family, Traffic, and Cream. Cream were just a rock band - an excellent one, sure, but not a supergroup.
