I completely agree. This is probably the best example of a movie that actually needed a remake. Not something like Nightmare on elm street which Wes Craven got right the first time and was only remade to make some money off of the title.
@salwashabazz7329

That remake was NOT better than the original lol. It was way more over the top and had more gore but that doesn’t make something a better movie; it never has and it never will. The cast who played the cannibal family were nowhere near as creepy as they were in the OG version. They were more nasty and cruder (maybe) but there was nothing unique about them! There was something about those OG actors and what they brought to their characters! The remake wasn’t bad by any means but it was just like any other “good remake” (more gore and way more over the top).

Also FYI seeing the movie at a younger age definitely helped in me claiming this is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen, but also I went into this at like 11-12 years old not knowing what to expect. I knew nothing about The Hills Have Eyes and had no idea what I was getting myself into. I watched the movie with my older brother and when the scene where the mutant is on this rock chewing on a dogs leg, and then laughs a maniacal laugh, I swear I looked right over at my brother with the most terrified look on my face. All in all this remake is just one HELL of a movie and I Fucking love it. Can’t wait for you to review it.

The remake is damn near as perfect as you're gonna get for a horror movie. The original was fantastic for the time it was made and the budget it was made with. The remake didn't really change too much, storywise. Even most of the characters had similar personalities even though they were played by different actors. Altogether, it seems like they just wanted to graduate the original to the level it coulda been had the finances and technology been available.

And still several I'm looking forward to while you're doing this, Deadly Friend and Shocker just to name a few I loved growing up. As far as the question at the end, I think I saw this first before the remake, although I was only 9 years old when the remake came out, so can't 100% remember for sure if it was before or after.

When it comes to how these films portray the villains, both this and the remake really miss the mark in terms of social commentary. In the original, the cannibals are given individual personalities that make them seem human, yet Papa Jupiter doesn't have any discernible motivation beyond simply being evil. If we're to believe the backstory, he was a monster literally from birth. The remake gives the backstory of the U.S. government destroying the homes of innocent small-town miners and causing their mutations through nuclear testing. This may add some moral ambiguity to the villains... but at the same time, they're not fleshed-out characters as they were in the original. Neither incarnation makes the cannibals seem entirely human.
