One would be hard pressed to find an area of the United States that encapsulates as much of our country's history as the Historic Triangle in Virginia. The Historic Triangle includes Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown.
Jamestown was the first successful British colony in North America and its success was due in part from the roots of self governance that was initiated in order to help the settlement thrive. These roots of self-governance would go on to begin the formation of the governing bodies of the colony and would serve as a blueprint for the future independent government of the United States.
Williamsburg was the colonial capital of Virginia from 1699 and served as capital until 1780 when Virginia moved its capital to Richmond in 1780 during the Revolutionary War. It was here that such names as Thomas Jefferson, Peyton Randolph, Patrick Henry, and George Washington served int the House of Burgess. There they debated the issues regarding the rising tension between the colonies and the crown and ultimately voted to join the burgeoning movement to independence.
Yorktown is where the fate of the British rule over the United States was sealed. It is her that you can see the fields where the allied American and French forces und the command of General Rochambeau and General Washington, encompassed and laid siege to the British forces under the command of General Cornwallis. While the final peace was not negotiated between the United States and the British Empire until 1783, it was here in October of 1781 with the British surrender, that the war essentially ended.
The Historic Triangle is a collection of museums and parks, connected by the Colonial Historic Parkway, that help to tell the story of our nation's beginnings. See our blog about the various sites at seemoreadventu....
