If you happen to be in San Sebastian in Spain or Biarritz in France, you should definitely go to the historical French fishing town of #SaintJeandeLuz, which is 30 minutes away from these two cities.
Located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean on the French side of the Basque region, Saint Jean de Luz is famous for its sandy beach, delicious food, fishing and its history.
Cardinal Mazarin, who was commissioned by the French King #LouisXIV to end the almost 30-year war between Spain and France, stayed in Saint Jean de Luz for a few months during his negotiations with the Spanish side in 1659.
In November 1659, the Treaty of Pyrenes was signed by Louis XIV of France and Philip IV of Spain on the island of Pheasant, which is 12 km from Saint Jean de Luz.
With this treaty, apart from ending the war and determining the border between Spain and France, it was also decided that King Louis XIV of France and Princess #MariaTheresa of Spain would marry in the Sean Jean de Luz church.
In line with the treaty, in June of the year 1660, King Louis XIV of France moved his entire court from Paris to reside in Saint Jean de Luz for over a month for his royal wedding.
On 9 June 1660, King Louis XIV of France married Princess Maria Theresa of Spain in Saint Jean de Luz church.
This lovely resort town is a very nice place to enjoy the sea and taste the amazing delicious dishes of the Basque cuisine in the summer months.
The historical houses lined up in rows along the river were amazing as we walked towards the city center. After walking a little more, we came across a stone building among these historical houses, which differs from the others due to its architecture and historical importance.
This stone building is the only house of Dutch style of the region. During the marriage ceremony of King Louis XIV of France and Princess Maria Theresa of Spain in 1660, Cardinal Mazarin stayed in this building. And, Maurice Ravel, the world-famous composer of "Bolero", which everyone listens to with admiration, was born in this building on March 7, 1875. This building, which is now used as a tourist office, is called Maison de Ravel. Ravel spent his summer holidays in Saint Jean de Luz.
It would be impossible to leave the historic fishing town of Saint Jean de Luz without eating seafood. We looked at the taste of them, as they especially recommended that we eat oysters, sardines and sea bass at the restaurant named L’Écailler. Oysters and sardines were great, but the taste of the sea bass with sauce was not good as the grilled sea bass in our country.
This week we tried to introduce you to the historical French fishing town of Saint Jean de Luz.
