Ever since humans discovered fire, they've been burned. Ancient societies concocted a plethora of weird and wonderful approaches to burn treatment, from applying milk and honey to wounds to smearing them with feces-yes, feces. At one point hundreds of years ago, doctors even believed treating burns with more fire was the way to go. Over the last century, spurred by events like World War II and the Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire in Boston, huge leaps have been made in the treatment of burns. Today, burn care requires a complex, multi-faceted approach spanning multiple fields of medicine.
