I grew up in South Bend, Indiana and met George Way in 1960 when my father took me to the Elkhart factory and Mr. Way let me pick a set from the factory shelves (aristocrat green sparkle pearl) and Eddie Knight was my teacher…Eddie played well into his eighties…wish I still had that kit…sorry that G Way drums went the way of Studebaker automobiles !

To bad the company left Indiana and aren't made anymore. Love to get an Elkhart made kit.

I just wanted to add being a Tama historian in a way. The Hoshino version of Camco started out using the exact Keller made rering shell Camco used in late 77 78 until 79 they switched to a straight shell using 6 plys of maple and made by Jasper shell company. They ended production of Camco in late 1980. There was talk in the late 2000s to bring back a high end Camco line but it did not seem fesiable so it didnt happen. The Tama Star line came out of that work. Great podcast you have and if you do a Tama one i can help.you out with that. Thanks and keep up.the good work.

This knowledge has to be more known in the Camco community. You’ve always done solid research brother. Thank you for this info!

Someone should talk to Don Lombardi about bringing back the Camco line. he would be the best equipped to do it! Here’s a fun fact the Camco “turret lug” Started out life in 1952 as a bracket for a bass drum mounted L arm cymbal holder, However it was made by leedy Ludwig For their bass drums! It’s in the 1952 L& L catalog, The one with the orange cover you’ll see the “Turret”bracket in the back of the catalog. By the way George way owned a Drum shop in Hollywood California for a while I believe it was called the Hollywood drum shop interesting little tidbit.!

@@nealsausen4651 DW pretty much is the modern Camco. As for the making a kit using the name they cant. They dont own the name.

@@johnnymartines2118 : I am quite aware of both these points! You’re quite correct DW is essentially Camco drums on steroids! I believe the trademark at least the last time I heard was owned byTAMA which is Hoshino Gakki However I don’t think Tama is doing much with that name / label lately and I wouldn’t be surprised if they would like to just get rid of it, and knowing Don Lombardi, If he wanted the trademark he could probably get it but this is all speculation on my part of course!

@@Koch-Locke Great info there! My theory is that the mid- to late- 60s Camco 6-ply shells were maple/gum.

@@Koch-Locke Camco never stated that they were 100% maple...this was back when drums companies said "maple", and used other woods as filler plies. Oaklawn shells aren't 100% maple, I'd bet anything.

@@Koch-Locke Who knows, but those Oaklawn and Chanute shells were very light, and I had a few discussions many years ago with a craftsman who worked for Corder Drums back in the day, and also had worked at Jasper, the supplier of Camco Oaklawn shells. He told me that Jasper never made a 100% maple shell, that most were maple / gum, regardless of the company that ordered the shells.
