No wonder playing Compile games after being stressed out by Battle Garegga felt like, uh, home. Many design stuff like destructible bullets and big ships are several of Compile staples. For both aspiring shmup developers and acute shmup junkies, checking out Compile shooters is a must.
@ShmupJunkie
3 жыл бұрын
The bullet cancelling was one thing I wanted to talk about a little and just couldn't fit it in with the delays, but it was in the plans. Them being primarily a home console developer mad it easier to create games anyone can play and enjoy instead of eating quarters like the arcade. Garegga is technically a partial Compile game too, but it's also arcade and Yagawa right. I am sure it was his influence that made it so much more brutal. And they were already going that direction with Batrider.
@BalsticMaker12

@@ShmupJunkie lol. Speaking of Compile’s influence within Garegga, you don’t see often shmups that give you lots of extends easily and doesn’t have checkpoints. One of Compile staples is very generous extends and it’s normal to gain around 6 extends per run just by scoring alone in Battle Garegga. This is where Yagawa’s brutality comes in: Rank System. Without rank system, Battle Garegga’s extends would make the game too humane and arcade operators don’t like that. The Premium mode is the prime example of that. Yeah, I think you get around 6 extends in GGA3 too in a single run. Meanwhile GGA1 would give a dozen.

@@ShmupJunkie Love Compile. I just wish I recognised their greatness at a younger age. Back then, if it wasn't a game by Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, Konami or a few Amiga developers like Factor 5, Bitmap Brothers, Sensible Software, I didn't really pay attention to them. Of course I saw great games by developers not developed by the above, but their names didn't stick with me as the developers of that great game I once played. I missed out on a lot because of that. I'll always owe compile for making me a shooter junkie. I dismissed the genre for decades after some frustrating early experiences (especially with Gradius as a kid) and only came around after my first playthrough of The Guardian Legend in 2017. Since then, I've been addicted and have cleared dozens of great shooters, including Gradius. I still maintain that Compile's stuff in general is the single best gateway to classic shooters for newcomers. They hit a sweet spot after Zanac and the first couple Aleste titles where the default difficulty in most games is perfect for not scaring off the inexperienced, which really allows the speed and exciting power-up systems time to sink their hooks in. I can certainly appreciate Toaplan and Irem shooters now, for example, but they tended to make no effort at all to ease you in like that.
@ShmupJunkie
3 жыл бұрын
You hit the nail on the head with many Compile games being great entry points for players. Their earlier games like you mentioned were still pretty tough. Not a lot of people could get very far. And it turned out to be because Sega was pushing them to make the games harder. The later games like Blazing Lazers and Super Aleste eased you in and were pretty playable for most until at least after the first 2-3 stages. They knew they were making console games and did not want to approach it like arcade games meant to eat quarters. You had paid for the game already, full price, so the goal was fun, not to eat money. I can relate RType in the arcade kicked my ass. I never got past stage 4 until it finally came out on the Turbografx where I could play it to my heart's content and learn it. I love them now too but agree they were brutal.

At least with the Saturn, a lot of the cool Raizing games got near arcade perfect ports that they deserved. By the time the DC was a thing bullet hell was the rage and Cave was doing their thing. I would love to see a newly made game by them with M2 using something like the Dreamcast hardware though. They'd pull off something beautiful with it. And it's popular as an indie platform. But I doubt it, they seem to be sticking to either the modern consoles which is great, or using the original hardware like they did with GG Aleste 3. Which means likely an MSX style game will be next followed by maybe Mega Drive. Which I'd be pretty excited about too.

Compile style is one of my favourites, their games aren't ultra hard like others and the pacing is always fast and fun. Some people criticize the length and samey power ups system in all their games but I think they just wanted to make games familiar to all players, and instead on trying to learn new mechanics, if you already played any of their games you are ready to go. Also a bigger game feels more worth the money, at least that's what's probably they thought. Compile was as important for the shmup genre as Toaplan. One for the Arcades and the other for home systems. Hope the new games get enough attention and that way M2 could bring more new entries, maybe even sequels of old Compile classics.
@ShmupJunkie
3 жыл бұрын
You made a good point about their games being more accessible and not ultra hard right away and I totally agree there. A lot of people remember their games well as they made them feel like a hero while playing. And they always had a solid hard more for anyone that wanted even more challenge. It was interesting to read that Sega were the ones pushing them to make the games harder early on. I am doing my best to help bring attention to the new releases so we do in fact get more sequels in the future. A true 16bit mega drive sequel would be pretty out of this world.

I agree with you here. I'm new to to the stg genre and am not very good but compile games are a really good way to practice because I can play games with similar power up systems and learn the ins and outs of those and I'm becoming a much better player because of it. The main ones I've played through have been blazing lazers/gunhed, super star soldier, final star soldier, and now working through soldier blade. Weird how compile never makes the best shooters of all time lists

@@ShmupJunkie they've been great. I find through them it is a bit hard to balance punishing the player for getting hit vs overall game difficulty. You made a great point right there, is that Compile games are fun and not just for veterans. They are console games by design and made to be more accessible than arcade shooters of that time. Excellent job on this video Junkie. Someone had to illustrate the masses on the influence of the original Compile crew over the genre across more than 30 years already, and that someone had to be you. There's still more to talk about when looking at Milestone and RS34 and a couple of others (perhaps for a part 2 someday :D), Compile's OG crew is simply too influential in a genre that was born with the medium. Great vid, worth the wait and the hard work you have poured into it. This is my favorite type of content to discuss and bring forward. GGs Junkie!

Thanks my friend and if this video inspires you to keep working on your favorite devs that only you can do justice, then it will have been worth it for that alone. Milestone and other split offs was one of the aspects I wanted to get into, but I feared it would cross the hour mark and become too much. So yeah, perhaps for the next series. I'm also not as familiar with them vs Raizing, even if I did play Radirgy and some others a bit, I need much more time to explore those games before I could really talk about them. So I focused on what I knew and appreciated most. I think the Toaplan/Raizing connection and games in general deserve their own video, so that's definitely on the table.

I grew up with The Guardian Legend, as first thing. Then, here it came Zanac and, after that, I've had the luck to have a classmate who owned a Turbografx, where we played, of course, the phenomenal Blazing Lazers. (but my favourite game on the NEC machine was Soldier Blade) Moral of the story: I've always been a shoot'em up fanatic like you! (fun fact: some Gun Nac sprites and characters comes from The Guardian Legend, even a great part of the soundtrack was projected to remind of The Guardian Legend) Cheers from another fan of Compile! COMPILE FOREVER!

I always loved that Compile games had nods to their various games across all their releases. Especially with music and sound effects. Playing Super Aleste reminds of Blazing with the sound effects, and Blazing reminds of Gun Nac. And key sound effects, power ups and music cues all make new games feel familiar with old. It's like final fantasy, where games are unrelated, but share various creatures, story threads, fanfares etc. to make the new feel familiar. You're lucky you had a friend with one that was rare indeed. I was lucky to be that friend who had one haha. But I could only have one system, so I was the one mooching off my other friends' Genesis and SNES consoles. But I wouldn't have given up my Duo for anything.

The only Compile game I've played is Robo Aleste on the Sega CD (though I suppose it's not TRUE Compile)... I have to say, it's one of my favorite shmups of all time, and the gamers in my inner circle of friends all consider it one of the Sega CD's crown jewels. It has a lot of great music tracks as well. One of the examples given of a drab background in Robo Aleste in this video is the 2nd level... While not the most advanced background, it deserves more credit than it is given here. You're flying above the Imagawa army and you pass over tons of soldiers in banners which is pretty cool while the level itself is just a lot of fun. I'm fine with agreeing to disagree here, but I had to say my piece. :) I ended up on this video because of the algorithm, but it was an interesting history lesson! Aleste Branch looks pretty amazing so I'll be keeping an eye out for that! PS: Oh now that I think about it I guess I did try Blazing Lasers at one point. I didn't play for very long, but a very solid and fun game.

I know a lot of people that really dig Robo Aleste so you're not alone. Part of it is comparison to a great game like MUSHA which came out as a regular Mega Drive cart years before Robo. If you ever play that and see how incredibly detailed it is, it puts it into perspective a bit. Despite that Robo is a good looking game itself too. But in my mind, even an OK Compile game is still better than most others of that era. They just did great work. For Aleste Branch, have you seen the latest trailer that just came out? Look it up, much newer and updated footage. If you thought it looked good here, you'll love the new one!

This gives me life. To me, Compile have always BEEN shmups. They're the archetypal definition of what I think of when I hear the word, I guess along with Gradius/Life Force & R-Type. It's good to see them back in the conversation lately, after a long period where it seemed like they were overlooked while everyone talked about Treasure & Cave. Only things that stood out as missing from the video for me were Spriggan Powered on teh Super Famicom, & during the Raizing section Soukyugurentai (aside from the brief shout out at the beginning). Souky has got to be one of the most significant titles associated with them. But this also showed me a couple of titles I'd never seen, like Devil's Heaven and Rude Breaker. Thanks for the great video.
@ShmupJunkie
3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, Compile in my mind was the undisputed king of console STGs, they were so prolific. Other genres may have sold better and helped them succeed like Puyo, but you can tell the shooters were their first and true love. I actually didn't include Powered as far as I know, it's not a Compile game at all they didn't work on it. Unless they did and it's uncredited. I unfortunately had to gloss over some great games like Souky and others as the video was getting too long, and it was more about Compile than Raizing. But I agree I love Souky it's one of my favorite of theirs. I will eventually do a video just for Raizing, so you can bet they'll get their full due for every release. They really made my favorite arcade STGs during those later years, even moreso than Cave just for my personal preference. I plan to do more vids like this for them, Technosoft, Toaplan and more. They all need a spotlight. But I had to start with Compile and I'm really glad I did. I also never knew of Rude Breaker until I was researching and a friend on my Discord started telling me all about it. And it's actually a kick butt game!

The Aleste collection wasn't much of a priority for me (physical copies cost more) but you basically talked me into it now. M2 continues to go above and beyond with retro games. I think it was Toho in both the US and Japan too, same publisher which wasn't that common. I finally got a good physical copy of the game last year it's essential. It was the game where Compile finally released something for the SNES and were like "hold my beer" 😂

@@ShmupJunkie Well, I have had a copy of space megaforce since I was a kid (technically it was my dads but when i got into gaming in the late 90s i claimed the SNES and all its games as my own haha) and regret to inform that I sold it on ebay for about £50 in 2019! I was absolutely broke for a few months when between jobs so thought it was a necessity at the time. If i look to buying a another copy i'll keep an eye out for a usually cheaper loose sfc copy of super aleste. Not bothering with the PAL version cos it runs noticeably slower.

@@ShmupJunkie To be honest, I don't think he was a massive gamer or anything. Just had a handful of random snes games across multiple genres and the only shmup he had was space megaforce. Can't remember him playing it that much to be honest (usually would just play street fighter 2, super tennis or mario world haha) so i think he may have got it cheap a few years after its release. Excellent vid! Well worth the wait :-) Let s cover Spriggan for the next direct inject. This video has inspired me to dig into that game more :-) Also fun fact, MUSHA has a counterstop rollover glitch that I figured out last year ha, I think I might have the highest public score for the game because no one else went beyond the counterstop.

Thanks! If you want to talk about Spriggan I am all in. I know you enjoyed your time getting the clear on Hard mode of Musha, and the two share a lot of DNA. It's not on Musha's level in regards to the killer metal music, but you'll appreciate how beautiful the sprites in the game are. They really used that color palette to it's potential. It's like Musha where the default difficulty is no sweat, but I am also curious what the harder modes are like as I always just played it casually.

The history of Shooters, depends on what you are talking about. I was watching this video while my mother was in the same room when I was helping her do dishes while listening to this without headphones. I had to explain to her, shooters are known as the Side Scroll Shooters or the Vertical Shooters, example Space Invaders from 1978 was the first example of a Vertical Shooter (at least from my parent's knowledge) I also had to explain to her that the mainstream thinks of shooters as only 1st Person Shooter games. Mostly information from the mainstream media that is often the WORST information to get anything gaming from. There are Vertical Shooters, Side Scroll Shooters, those genres split into Space Shooters to Cute Shooters to Weird Shooters. Then there are On-Rail Shooters that is where you shoot like you are on a train or rail that camera controls itself like it was on the 90s Arcade games or early 3D Shooters that gave the impression of you being on a roller coaster ride. Then there is the 1st Person Shooters of course like from Doom to Quake to Call of Duty. And then there is the 3rd Person Shooters where you can see your character on screen like in Jet Force Gemini, Sin and Punishment, Earth Defense Force. There there are Arena Shooters with 1st Person Arena being Unreal Tournament to Counter Strike and then the 3rd Person Arena Shooters like Bullet Girls to the Fortnite and I am not sure what Apex Legends or Overwatch are but I am sure they are mostly 1st Person arena shooters where you can select your own characters. Metroid to Contra and other games that combine Platforming through huge worlds with shooting elements are known as Metroidvania sort of games without being clear if they are core shooting games. But most mainstream people will only think of one thing when it comes to shooting games, but it is mostly people who have played or been aware of the gaming culture over the decades that knows that one shooter is NOT what all shooters are.

I really enjoy their older games like Zanac and Aleste, in addition to the newer stuff. Definitely catch up and play some games like Musha and Blazing Lazers if you haven't, they are classics. If you like Zanac, their release on the Playstation was really cool too, the Zanac Neo I showed in the video somewhere. But a great place to start is the M2 Aleste Collection as well, as both Aleste and Power Strike II are very similar in feel to Zanac and you'd enjoy them. And the new GG Aleste 3 game is fantastic. I did a video review on it a while back. It will give you an idea if it's the kind of games you'd be interested in of theirs.

Guardian Legend is a Masterpiece and a true stand out in the Videogame history. Its NES hard, as it should be, its fast as hell for the system and just a unique combination, that sadly never found any sequel or inspiration for other game manufacturers. the game does both parts well, the Action-RPG and the Shmup part. AND talking about weapons.. a lot of them.. the cooleste weapon in the RPG Part is the double Lasersword.. they made it cool, years befor Starwars Episode one.

This is one of the best videos on the genre.
@ShmupJunkie

Oh yeah you are right about that. For 1985 it was about as good as it gets. Compile always took advantage of the hardware. Playing it now it's all so simple and repetitive, but it was state of the art then. I actually didn't play Zanac until late 80s on NES, so comparing it to something like Life Force it was definitely on the simple side. But it always played fast which is what I liked most about it. I really enjoy making vids like this and will keep planning to once I've recovered from this one. 😅
