The Ames e-tool came before the Gerber one. The Gerber one is the one the US military use today

wow! love how you traced the evolution of the shovel! amazing! fascinating all around. were any of those early ones bob's? what about the vietnam era one? I remember at least one of them (the one with the cover) hanging from one of his world war two packs I think:) and that pith helmet looks eerily familiar haha

The U.S. M-1943 E-tool was based on the German M1938 Klappspaten.

Every folding E-tool I've ever used has been a single-use item as the hinge/screw fails and it becomes a floppy mess. Gimme a simple wood handled Cold Steel Spetsnaz style shovel every time.
